Microtech-based Societies and Civilizations

Microtech-based Civilizations - Data Panel

Predominant Tech Level: Advanced Middle Tech to basic Hi Tech

Tech Scale/Density: Macrotech, various levels of Microtech, may have Basic to Middle level Mesotech

Median Toposophic Level of Citizens: So:1 - SI:0.3 (Baseline Equivalent) up to ~SI:0.6 (superbright)

Predominant Subjective Time: Slow (organic metabolic), with limited Fast emerging (through primitive virch)

Maximum Kardashev Number: Kardaschev < I

Current Galactographic Distribution: Because it is short-lived and unstable (tending to basic nanotech) this is the least likely type of civilization one is likely to encounter. There are some Utopia Sphere protectorates; many Ludd polities, a number of societums, a few baseline parks, an unknown but probably small number of small isolated deeper and hider communities who have reverted to a lower tech level

Some Characteristic Societies and Civilizations: Information Age Old Earth, xenosophont equivalents, Metasoft's Hu Earth Reserve (in the Demera-253 Habitats), the Lower Perseus Church of Man (Traditional Schools), the Friends of Ludd, Marians (limited nano), various societum cultures, both reconstructed and novel, basic High Tech civilizations and societies in general.

Further Comments: Microscale civilisations control structures and energy using microtech and microscopic (on the order of micrometers and less) tools, e.g. optical and x-ray lithographic integrated circuits, and genetic engineering. The emphasis is on information networks, and on "smart technology" of using machinery in a more precise and qualitative manner, and on small is better. Energy is produced using organic and/or fossil fuels in conjunction with renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, solar or geothermal power, by fuel cells, and, if the technology is there, nuclear fusion. There may be some very basic bionanotech, usually crude microscale mass-production of circuitry and building materials, almost always using organic or quasi-organic materials. Primary Microscale civilisations may have very basic space flight and established bases in orbit or on some of the nearer planets and moons, although generally unmanned probes are widely used. At this point a Singularity may occur and AIs attain self-consciousness. These civilizations are always almost short-lived, due to the steep technological progress curve that tends to occur at this level. Societums and transapient hobbyists however can maintain microscale civilisations indefinitely, provided all the environmental requirements and other resources are provided. Ludd Microtech polities however are unstable and short-lived, and can only be maintained through memetic enforcement.
