Ultratech Cultures and Civilisations -
Data Panel
Includes: Many Macroscale Nanotech Societies and Civilisations; some Nanoscale Societies Median Toposophic Level of Citizens: SI:0.4 (presuperbright) to ~SI:0.9 superbright/superturings. There will often be a large number of SI:1 (posthuman and hyperturing), in mainly administrative or management positions, or as observers, traders, adventurers, or tourists Major Sophont Phyla and Metaphyla: augmented Bionts of all kinds, cyborgs, and superturing and hyperturing artificials and ai, also posthumans Energy Requirements: Locally Very High, although widespread use of solar power, nuclear fusion and/or amat means energy is cheap and abundant. Spaceship propulsion is the most energy-expensive Material Requirements: While extensive manufacturing, mining, trade, and so on are necessary, nanotech recycling increases resource efficiency tremendously, and Ultratech civilizations are far more resource-efficient then contemporary and equivalent High Tech polities Maintenance Requirements: Varies according to tech type. Hylonano and Infotech are generally very intensive, requiring a huge superturing- and superbright- based support base. Biotech and Bionano-based societies have far less requirements, but are still much higher than Low Tech societies; many are equivalent to drytech High Tech societies. Chronometric Rate: slow to fast (varies according to clade, culture, and phyle) Kardashev Number: Generally around 1.0 to 1.5 (Kardashev II - dyson sphere construction or equivalent is possible, but infrequent) Current Galactographic Distribution: found throughout the civilized galaxy, in most Sephirotic and non-aligned polities, both in and near the main capitals, and also away from the more developed and angelnetted worlds, as well as in those isolated habitats and polities - usually superbright or transapient administered, which can maintain a high-level technological and maintenance base Power and Influence: Can be locally quite powerful, especially in isolated polities, but in more developed regions depend on the surrounding Transapientech Civilizations Some Characteristic Societies and Civilizations: Many polities, stations, and habitats, both as elements with larger sephirotic empires, and as a large number of lesser civilizations in less connected Inner Sphere worlds, polities, and habitats, the Hinterworld Regions, and the Outer Volumes; a number of less extreme ludd groups, some baseline supremacist factions, societums, novelty worlds, and so on; many more isolated and less developed deeper polities, and as various clades and polities or micropolities affiliated with larger transapientech civilizations, among most xenosophont empires, as well as in most regions outside the metaempires. Further Comments: These constitute the majority of polities and societies inhabited by free sapients in the more developed regions - especially the Inner Sphere and the hinterworlds of the main provincial centers. While many are directly affiliated with the big sephirotics, Ultra Tech Civilizations can also still survive quite well, either in isolated areas or under the patronage or protection of a higher toposophic mind, and be quite successful and locally extremely competitive with similar low toposophic cultures. Industry, economics and biospherics are developed, space travel is often advanced, especially interplanetary travel (interstellar travel is more difficult), orbital habitats are common and standard, and there is no shortage of living room, at least in the low population habitats. Economics may be capitalist-scarcity based supply and demand (whether internal or involving trade with the outside galaxy), centralist command economy, or post-scarcity nanotopia. Complexity management is a serious problem with Ultratech societies, much more so even than Hi Tech societies. Such powerful, highly productive systems often consist of layers upon layers of dry and advanced wet nano all the way from matter recycling, mechosystems, and household material recycling up to solar energy receiving stations and climate control foglets. The overall techno-social structures are so fantastically complicated that it requires high grade AIs to manage them effectively - and these high level AI may have agendas of their own. |
