Picotech artifacts are not uncommon, and can fetch a high price in some polities Legal Status: Common templates are widely distributed; but the possession of more unusual artifacts may often be regulated. And although picotech artifacts are common, very few sapients have access to even basic picotech templates. Sephirotic hyperturings, especially the TRHN and other friendly transapient polities, as well as the Solar Dominion and others, will often distribute harmless and "baseline friendly" picotech. Environmental Requirements: depends on the particular device. Some pico requires hard vacuum to function, or very high energy levels; other picotech devices can be employed anywhere Ease of Use; Care and Maintenance: With only a few exceptions, pico cannot be debugged, reverse engineered, or maintained by sapient-level sophonts without higher toposophic assistance. However, baseline-friendly pico is common and not too expensive Popular With: most advanced (and even non-advanced by technophilic) clades and polities Comments: A picometer is about one thirty-seventh the radius of a hydrogen atom. Picotech is the next stage beyond nanotech. On the one hand there are several paths to picotech, just as there are several to nanotech. But also things just merge - there are many materials out there, but far fewer chemicals and even fewer kinds of atoms, which are composed of even fewer kinds of quarks and leptons. As with Nanotech, Picotech enabled a new industrial revolution. Tiny "Quantum Machinery" is able to work with subatomic particles and quantum field events. |
