A picometer is about one thirty-seventh the radius of a hydrogen atom, a femtometer is 3 orders of magnitude smaller again (10-15 meters), which is the scale on which femtotech works. Beyond femtotech is attotech. A thousand attometers make up one femtometer. Any one of these scales can be used for sufficiently transcended AIs, even if the technology is progressively inscrutable. Even more so than the femtolects, the attolect nodes can use technology that is so advanced that is inconceivable to biont life. Attotech enables the packing of enormous densities of information even within a subatomic particle. Such nodes however require an enormous sustaining and maintaining superstructure to deal with power generation, input and output, heat emission, and so on. They are literally godstars. Beneath the attometer scale are even faster and smaller scales such as zeptotech (10 to the minus 21 meters) and yoctotech (10 to the minus 24). At these scales, especially the latter and smaller, the AIs effectively become point source entities... A serious problem arises with Bremermann's Limit, which represent the maximum possible speed allowed for computation per unit of matter. This is why proton-sized yoctotech-AI Jupiter brains are impossible. |
