Nanoscale Societies and Civilizations - Data Panel
Tech Level: Ultratech and basic Transapientech Based on: Nanotech Median Toposophic Level of Citizens: SI:1 (posthuman and hyperturing) Predominant Subjective Time: Fast to Hyperfast (virtuals and infomorphs) Maximum Kardashev Number: Kardaschev II nanoscale-based dysons can be found among "low tech" MPA, TRHN, and Keterist polities, as well as the Efficency Maximization Paradigm, and a great many Diamond Network polities and civilizations Current Galactographic Distribution: very common among the Sephirotics, the Diamond Network, Objectivists and other civilizations and metaempires. Very often "small" (orbital size or less) nanoscale clades and civilizations are found embedded in larger and more advanced ultratech civilizations, especially in big orbital bands, dyson swarm habitats, large and complex ISO megastructures, and everywhere that ultratech infrastructures and appropriate computronium can be found. Some Characteristic Societies and Civilizations: Most solidstate civilisations of the late Interplanetary age onwards. Solidstate civilisations and empires like the Efficency Maximization Paradigm are good examples of integral nanotech civilizations, but there area great many more innocuous examples. Further Comments: Nanoscale civilisations integrally control matter using nanotechnology, achieving atomic precision. There are no macroscale or microscale elements so the process is completely efficient. The nano may be bio-, dry- or synano. Nanoassemblers, customized materials, molecular computers, self-replicating machines and megastructures are all standard. Fusion power, large scale solar collectors and antimatter production are the usual means of energy generation. Infomorphs such as uploads, copies, and vir po are common, as are hyperturing and superturing AIs. Because processing often - especially in the case of dry or hylo-nano - is very fast, the sentients of these societies tend to have a very high subjective rate of awareness, which means that entire nanoscale civilizations may rise and fall in a few years or decades of slowtime macroscale awareness. Inevitably, solidstate civilizations are short-lived, although there examples of some, such as the Old Fogies, the Paradigm and Nimbus, that have continued for several millenia or more (in the case of the Numbus foglet nanoborgs and the Paradigm, the clockrate is often deliberately reduced). |
