| Macroscale Nanotech-based Societies and
Civilizations - Data Panel
Predominant Tech Level: High Tech (bionano and mesotech), Ultratech, sometimes with Transapientech elements Based on: Very Advanced Macrotech, Microtech, and Mesotech; Basic to Advanced and Nanotech Median Toposophic Level of Citizens: So:1 - SI:0.3 (Baseline Equivalent) to SI:0.4 (pre-superbright). There will often be a smaller number of low grade SI:0.5 to higher level ~SI:0.9 superbright/superturings, and some SI:1 (posthumans and hyperturings), in mainly specialised positions or as observers, traders, adventurers, or tourists, but also as local administrators, statesbeings, diplomats, artists, and scientists Major Sophont Phyla and Metaphyla: Sapients of all kinds, under transapient (posthumans and/or hyperturings) dominion. Predominant Subjective Time: Slow (organic metabolic) to Fast (virtuals and infomorphs) Maximum Kardashev Number: up to Kardaschev II (but usually lower) Current Galactographic Distribution: commonly found throughout the civilized galaxy. In most Sephirotic and non-aligned polities, most Deeper Covenant polities, among most xenosophont empires, as well as in most regions outside the metaempires. The bulk of competitive societies, polities, civilisations in less connected Inner Sphere worlds, polities, and habitats, various isolated colonies and polities in the Hinterworld Regions, and the Outer Volumes; many more isolated deeper polities, and as various clades and polities or micropolities embedded in larger and more advanced Transapientech civilizations, especially in large and complex dyson swarm megastructures. Some Characteristic Societies and Civilizations: Primitive nanotech civilization began with the middle to late Interplanetary era, and continued through the First Federation. Since then, especially with the rise of the transapient and archailect sephirotic empires, more advanced Ultra Tech and basic Transapientech civilizations and societies represent this type. Most civilisations of the post-Federation and Empires era Inner Sphere, and many Outer Volume and Periphery region civilisations were or are at this ceiling. Further Comments: Unlike integral nanotech civilizations, these hybrid macroscale-microscale-nanoscale cultures and civilisations can sometimes be reasonably long-lived (in the order of several centuries or more) and quite stable, even with only minimal hyperturing guidance. However, very few without higher toposophic supervision and regulation employ complete nanotech; those that do tend to make ascension or transition to posthumanism and beyond fairly quickly. Often to counter this possibility (which may have a disastrous and destabilizing effect all round) there is a tendency to establish a strongly tradition-based culture and society, sometimes employing aristocratic houses, long-lived (but obedient) culture heroes, very nano mild luddite religions, and other memetic devices. Sapient majority Macroscale to Nanotech societies and cultures are the most common level of advanced society maintained by subsingulitarian and occasional low toposophic sentients without external assistance from, or dependency upon, higher toposophic minds. Although, as indicated, polities of this technological level are very common, they are rarely competitive with the higher toposophic polities and powers. In general they are able to survive because they inhabit niche environments or ultratech reserves, or isolated and/or low resource star systems overlooked or considered not worth development by higher Minds. Where transapientech is present (as it often is in small amounts) it is usually a small selection of "safe" transapientech acquired through trade, although it does sometimes happen that these macroscale to nanotech polities may acquire more dangerous devices. On the other hand it is not uncommon to find feral polities of this sort. They differ in being much less regulated, and may range from fully libertarian free zones to pirate bases and local warlord enclaves and fiefdoms. Neither last long - the libertarians tend to undergo some sort of mass transcendence within a few decades or centuries at most, while pirates, warlords, and autocratic regimes may be targeted by local authorities, or disintegrate through internecine strife. Nanotech civilizations are very popular with sapients looking for adventure or independence from the sephirotic utopias. Unlike the big sephirotic empires, they rarely continue more for than half a dozen centuries. As well as the danger of unexpected transcendence, economic collapse, internecine warfare, or political destabilization, they can be at the mercy of Minds and polities that do not subscribe to the sentient rights standards of the civilized galaxy. Only those polities that have powerful patrons, or are protected by higher level transapients or ISOs, are safe in this regard. |
