Essential Baseline Accessories - High Tech![]() |
Ultra-tech augments transform even simple nearbaselines so much that they become some form of borg - depending on the kind of tech used, in most ultratech Societies. In contrast, baselines are still baselines in a high tech society. Here's a list of essentials for an 'average' person in an high tech polity.
a small (1/2 cu in) device worn as a watch, necklace, torque, headset, etc that parses vocal commands and responds in voice and/or projected hologram. Alternately, there's an 'on' button that projects a holographic keyboard that is scanned for finger-interaction. Alternately, it may pick up on thoughts through passive sensors or nanotubes punching thru. (the input and output options vary from clade to clade and tech-base to tech-base.) This is the interface to the local network, acting as watch/pager/cel/PDA/library/credit card/etc.
Another small device worn over a major vein or artery that scans the blood flow and reacts w/ appropriate injections to deal with excessive pain chems, infection, infestation, etc.
(these 2 may be combined if worn in an appropriate location - wrist, throat, etc)
Other gear which may well be common include but is not limited to:
GluStik - small device which is used to temporarily adhere any 2 surfaces together, and also to release such adhesion.
Zipper - small cutting device for opening the amazingly-resilient packaging materials common in the Civilized Galaxy - monomolecular edge, nanoserrations, goo, etc
Additional options to the network adaptor: Translator. Financial adviser. Tactical adviser. Technical adviser. Science adviser. Cultural adviser.
Passcoder - device which interfaces with the common locking mechanisms in the local environment acting like a ring of keys. Can be anything from an addition to the network adaptor to a ring to a key to a card to... you name it.
An aside about locks in the Civilized Galaxy:
The three parts of a security code - who you are, what you have, what you know - are even more important in a hypertech environment. You need to validate that you are who you are - everything from DNA ID to retinal ID to sentience-patterning (based off of an explosive growth in EEG's and information on thought processing) identify who you are. The 'what you have' is the random key - something that's generated using a specific piece of hardware you carry with you, implanted or not. Finally, the 'what you know' is your password - something you entrust to your encrypted mental storage if you have such, or something that's not a recognized word or date or other piece of guessable information.
