The first Interplanetary Net was the InterPlaNet, Interplanetary Network (IPN) in Solsys. This was an extension of Earth's Internet to CisLunar and interplanetary space during the Information Age.

Sinca that time interplanetary nets have been established in almost every system in the Terragen Sphere, operated by a wide range of institutions and other entities. All the various metaempires maintain inteplanetary nets within their systems, and most independent systems do likewise.

Most of these nets are connected to the Known Net, or to one or more of the alternate networks which operate outside that network. Rapid connections are generally routed via wormholes, while slower links are made via the Lightways.
