Category: Language Academic Coronese

Anglic-based Cyborg academic language used at the University of Corona and in many affiliated habitats and biospheres.

Various forms of pidgin Coronese, employing less rigid syntax, are popular among the baseline humans, with different dialects developing on different habitats and worlds - e.g. Quarkish Coronese, Toirrese (spoken in the Toirres Deme and throughout the Leoti system in general), and the multitudinous dialects of the Roaming Reach, to name just a few.

Category: Physics acceleration

The rate of change of velocity.

An object moving at a constant velocity in a coordinate system (reference frame) has zero acceleration. An object whose velocity is increasing has a positive acceleration; an object whose velocity is decreasing has a negative acceleration. Acceleration relative to a freely falling reference frame is experienced as gravity.

Category: Anthropology, Technology Acheulian technology

of, pertaining to, or typical of a Lower Paleolithic culture of the middle Pleistocene Epoch, characterized by large hand axes and cleavers made by the soft hammer technique.

Stone tools made by Homo erectus. Among a few eccentric extreme neo-prim baseline groups, as well as among collectors and neopaleolithic craftsmen, reconstructing these is of some interest.

Category: Biology acidophile

An organism with a pH optimum for growth at, or below, pH 3. A type of extremophile.

Category: AI personality Ackermann Gold

Hyperturing corporate AI from Nova Terra, after copies of Erikk Holsta merging with em did not solve the problem of Holsta's eccentric behaviour, stated that e did not think it had any responsibility for correcting self-destructive behaviours in so trivial minds as virtuals; later emigrated to Aleph Absolute.

Category: Philosphy acosmism

Extreme mystical-philosophical position that states that the physical universe (both r/l and virch) is ultimately unreal, and that only the Absolute is real.

Category: Astronomy accretion disk

whirling disk of hot gas and dust around a large compact object such as a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, usually material that has been thrown off one star and is being drawn into the companion object.

Category: Astronomy active galaxy

Galaxy whose centre emits an unusually high amount of energy, possibly as the result of a supermassive black hole. Typical signatures of active galaxies are variable brightness, broad emission lines, and strong radio emission.

Category: Nanotech active materials

The inclusion of nanobots in a paint or surface coating. These collect travel or flight information, fix cracks and detect and annihilate dirt.

Category: Psychology actualys

The dissolution of reality caused by inability to distinguish virtual from real. Usually caused by heavy use of virches, augmented reality, drugs or nanoprojections.

Category: Cultures and Societies Adapawe Clan

still under construction

Category: Biology adaptation

any alteration in the structure or function of an organism by natural selection, that helps it survive in its environment.

In the most general sense, adaptation is a feedback process in which external changes in an environment are mirrored by compensatory internal changes in an adaptive system. The actions of the adaptive unit can affect the environment, which, in turn, feeds information back to the adaptive system. Examples include Darwinian biological and alife selection and genetic algorithms, social systems, organic and nanogenic immune systems, natural and artificial neural networks, AIs, neumanns, and more.

Category: Infotech Category: Society Adaptive Mimetic Materials

A piece of matter designed to gather specific biometric traits of a being and store them for later recovery or broadcast/narrowcast to a dedicated recorder.

The most common is the adaptive mimetic material handle, which samples both palm print, finger prints, bioelectrical signatures, and sweat chemistry amongst bionts. With careful design, such materials can gather similar abiometric data from borgs and vecs, mapping the specific frequencies released by actuators, relative actuator strength, precise beam lengths, etc. This is often used along the lines of a cheap security measure, much like the locks offered on suitcases today.

John B (inspired by Dr William Sims Bainbridge's work on 'personality capture')

Category: Biology adaptive radiation

the diversification of a morphotype or species as it adapts to different ecological niches.

A single ancestral type in this way can evolve into a vast range of different descendants, each specialized for the new environment, and constituting a new phyle. May refer to biological or alife replicators, or to neumann-capable bots.

Category: Polity Adara Trade Treaty

Polity in the middle sphere, centred roughly on the bright giant star Adara (Epsilon Canis Majoris). Formed in 6120, breaking with the previous Sophic league structure. It was a revolution solely among the alphas, leaving the vast majority of inhabitants totally indifferent.

Category: Religion Adaran Extension

"Will to power" Adaran subversive missionary sect seeking not to strictly convert other systems but rather to make them tools for the happiness of the believers in evolutionary hedonism.

Category: Biology Adenine

A nucleotide; one of the two purines bases in terragen organic life. In DNA it is paired with thymine, to make the base pair A-T; in RNA paired with uracil to make the pair A-U.

Category: Memetics adbomb

subliminal memebot broadcast devices, scattered them around a designated area, they release a message into the brain of everyone in the area, usually an advertisement. Banned throughout much of the civilized galaxy, they are widely used in market state free zones such as the NoCoZo, and out towards the periphery where the reach of the noetic and other big ai states is not very strong.

Category: Polity Adorate

Sophic enclave in the Perseus Arm, fallen to the Amalgamation in 8761.

Category: Philosphy Advaita Vedanta

Popular monistic acosmic non-dualist mystical philosophy of Old Earth Hinduism

One of the principal Vedantic schools, Advaita was founded by the sages Gaudapada and (2 generations later) Shankara (7th/8th century c.e. India, Old Earth). Asserts the existence of Brahman alone, whose appearance as the world is misperception (maya) resulting from metaphysical ignorance (avidya). Upon attaining liberation one realizes that the inner self is the same as God/Godhead.

Advaita exerted a tremendous philosophical and cultural influence on Indian society throughout the medieval and colonial period. During the late atomic and throughout the information age watered-down Advaitin-based philosophies, religions, and guru-based sects were very popular in the West, mostly incorporated into Nuage and other syncretic religions. The rise of the big Indian megacorps like Hindustan Astronautics with the emerging Indian superpower of the middle to late Information Age, and the spread of a Hindu hi tech ethnic groups in space during the early Interplanetary Period helped with the revival of Advaita, which was frequently adopted as a matter of cultural pride, even by individuals who had little sympathy with or understanding of it.

With the later Mahayana, Cosmism, Sophism, and Nuagism became more predominant and the Advaitin meme was increasingly diluted, although it retained a hold in the old ethnic populations in the Sol System even as late as the Empires period. It also exerted a strong influence on some elements of Sophic memetics and religion.

Category: Personality Advection of Pure Drylines

Mirrored Owl swarm-nets of note, an inhabitant of Dragon in the Penglai system during the 4000's. E introduced neotaoist ideas into its cloud art (up until then the Owls had been fairly uninterested in the local philosophies), creating a series of highly influential artworks that both created a long era of neotaoist-inspired atmospheric art and interested the non-Owls in the practise.

Category: Economics advertising

A way of increasing demand by aggressively bringing the product to the attention of consumers.

Advertising may be liminal, subliminal, open, subversive, memetic, intelligent, ai, or any of a million other possible variants. Advertising is banned or strictly controlled in some polities and empires, selective in others, unregulated in others again, and any variation in-between. Always a good source of extra income, especially in the NoCoZo, the Terran Federation, and various Free Zones, advertising is often considered tacky and tasteless in the Solar Dominion, an unnecessary waste of orderliness in the Negentropic Alliance, demeaning to sentients in the Utopia Sphere, and too materialistic in the Sophic League.

Category: Occupation Advocacy

The study and dissemination of advanced knowledge, usually for memetic purposes.

Advocates are interested in and highly knowledgeable about many theoretical or applied scientific, toposophic, memetic and noetic fields of learning. Their knowledge includes a wide sweep of history, terminology, current controversies, technological applications, and the various tools of the trade, although they will generally also specialize in a favourite field of expertise. They are almost always augmented with extensive computronium implants, wetware and/or cyberware, and are of superbright or even S1 intelligence or above. Advocates can easily converse both with lay-sentients and specialists on many scientific subjects, and can explain complex theories in a comprehensible manner. Often they serve as heralds for higher toposophic entities, or may accompany Sephirotic ships or seraiph. Each Solar Dominion missionary ship for example has at least one Advocate among the crew.
