Category: Biologyanaerobic

Living in the absence of air or free oxygen; pertaining to or caused by the absence of oxygen. Eogaian planets are characterized by anaerobic conditions

anaerobe an organism, such as a bacterium, that does not require air or free oxygen to live (opposed to aerobe).

Category: Field of Science Anagnitics

The science of missing knowledge.

This high-Sophont-level science/artform, as best can be described to the SI:<1 intellect, involves canvassing the entire body of knowledge available at a given place/time and 'mapping' that information on an 'information map' (both quoted terms are extreme simplifications according to the translating sophonts). This 'information map' can then be perused and, theoretically, voids of knowledge may be discovered - areas where there are physical restrictions/laws.
(agnitio - from latin "recognition, knowledge", and "an-" prefix for "not")

Category: Esotericism Anahata Chakra
The fourth of the seven chakras, placed by some commentators in the region of the heart, although some, like the cybertantrika school, more often consider it a purely macrocosmic principle, and the Noetica School identify the Anahata with the posthuman Third Singularity. Atonists and Solarists consider the Anahata the microcosmic equivalent of the Lord of Rays. In archaic Tantra it is described as having twelve spokes or petals, is associated with the element air, and is considered the seat of the universal life-principle and of Jiva or Self

BD +47°1419

inner sphere system; Anahita was originally colonized by Dionysians during the expansion of the Erotocracy. After its dissolution it became part of the Conver Ambi, but retained extensive contacts with other Inner Sphere worlds. As the Second Empires war approached the local government sought help from Metasoft, but the detachment of Metasoft forces proved to be far to small. As the Orthodox fleet attacked the system in 3699 the outnumbered vecs made a heroic last stand, turning the system into a Thermopylae for the Orthodox fleets in the inner sphere. After the war the system was awarded to Metasoft where it became an independent module; it is to a large extent the biont gateway to Metasoft today.

Category: Government anarchy

The social state where people have no rulers or government, and where organizations develop on the basis of voluntary cooperation and the freely chosen association of individuals.

Anarchic polities and cooperatives have arisen innumerable times throughout the galaxy, especially among isolated settlements and habitats of sapients of either baseline or superbright intelligence. Few last longer than half a metric century

Category: Occupation Anatomist

One who specializes in the study of Anatomy

Anatomists almost always have boosted intelligence and memory capabilities. They are experts on dissection techniques, gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, physiology, histology, cytology, and bionano augmentation and bioborgization. E is highly knowledgeable about the organization and function of the various organs, tissues, and bodily parts, as well as how they can be augmented. Most anatomists have extensive implants and databases that give them an encyclopaedic knowledge of the internal structure and composition of millions of different species; the understanding of their evolutionary pathways; the affect of and compatibility or incompatibility with various biotech, bionano, and bioborg components; the ability to interface with cells, organs and tissues via their own bionano and bioborg augments; and so on. They can often identify a rare or unfamiliar phenotype from a single microscopic tissue sample, and are in demand in medical institutions, hospitals, forensic departments, biomedical teams, research teams, and so on.

Category: Historical Personality Anders Sandberg
Information age Transhumanist, Visionary, Computational Neuroscientist, and Fabulist, an important popularizer of a number of Transhumanist memes; very influential among the early biopunks and singularitists, experimented with a number of early wetware augmentations. A partial upload later turned up at Academion where e became an important member of the faculty and search engine.

During the middle Interplanetary period a clade of orbital crypto-transhumanists began worshipping a copy of the Anders Persona (later this was claimed to be a prank that got out of hand, but the founders of the sect strenuously refute this). Although the sect was short-lived, Anders worship and ascended Anders personas were still around well into the first Federation period, having survived the nanoswarm era.

Some time during the early-middle First Federation period, several Anders personas merged with a number of other ais and personas, commandeered an "Explorer Class" amat-drive probe and made for the Eta Carina region. According to controversial evidence found in Feinstein 1 by the Andian mission they might have attained Archailecthood. A local alife civilization calling itself the Echir-{n} claims to have been created by the passing ship several thousand years ago, although the reason for this remain unknown even to the Echir-{n}.

Category: Organisation Andian Mission
In the wake of the Version war and in the spirit of the ComEmp the Andian Mission was instituted in 4744 by some groups in the NoCoZo to help the badly damaged, isolated or poor systems of the outer volumes as well as try to contact the remaining fleets that were unaware of the end of the war. The Mission was based on a mixture of tolerant and pragmatic NoCoZo philosophies and managed to get support both from the Sophic Alliance and the Mutual Progress Association. This idealistic organization managed to contact hundreds of lost worlds, doing much good in the following millennia. While the core organization soon ossified and lost sight of the original goals, the active arm remained much the same as when it was started due to the amount of relativistic travel. In 6037 there was a formal break. The core Mission eventually developed into a banking concern, while the outer volume Andian Mission today remains a highly regarded support organization in the Carina-Vela outer volumes.

Category: AstronomyAndromeda Galaxy

also known as M31 and NGC 224, this giant spiral galaxy is the closest major galaxy to the Milky Way. Both belong to the Local Group. Several relativistic craft, including linelayers with wormholes, have left towards the galaxy through history, although the chances that they will reach it intact are probably remote.

Category: Cultures and Societies Andromeda Kids

Semi-mythological feral tweak-cyborg hu superbrights who established a number of ouster colonies in the vicinity of Kaypten's Star during the late Federation (early Emergence age) period.

Following their capture by the authorities they were employed by Stirling Immersives and made into socially acceptable malcontents. During the later Inner Sphere era several Andromeda Kid Klades appeared around several old cultural worlds, where they fed off the nostalgia and sympathy value. Despite their superbright status, they had especial appeal for disenfranchised nearbaselines (this has been called Superhero Syndrome). None had the success of the original Andromeda Kids. There are a number of long-lived current Andromeda Kid Klades - mostly nominal ferals or feral posers - scattered throughout the hinteregions and the outer volumes.

Often used as a companion-sentient or in the sex-trade. In less civilized parts of the galaxy, may be referred to as a boydoll or toyboy (or worse). c.f. gynamorph

Category: Transapient Angel

(1) (Colloquial) Any transapient being

(2) A transapient of such range in the service of an archailect.

(3) (In Archaipelago/ Archosaurian Empire) A transapient with a toposophic rating (SI: scale) between 1.0 and 1.5.

Such beings range from the post-biont hypersaurs to the wide variety of ship minds. The term was first used by expatriate nearbaseline humans in the Toh Chi Lok-Nar long before the formation of the Archosaurian Empire. The term is a rough Anglic translation of a near unpronounceable (to humans) Toh Chi word - this is true of the other nine ranks in the present-day Archosaurian transapient hierarchy. Despite its somewhat misleading ancient theological connotations, the term has stuck.

Category: Tweak clade Angels

Race of Tweaks modified to possess wings and musculature allowing them to fly in up to .3g conditions.

Angels generally make their homes on terraformed or worldhoused moons, or aboard low-spin space habitats. Originally created in 3672 by the hyperturing Rei-Den-Pho (who ascended to S4 and abandoned its creations shortly thereafter), it is conjectured that they were intended as a work of art. Angels are covered in brightly coloured feathers in brilliant primary hues and are often compared to terrestrial parrots in their plumage. They are fairly prolific and it is estimated that approx. 100 billion are spread across the wormhole nexus, mostly in the Inner Sphere and low Middle Regions.

Category: xenosophont Angel Hair

xenosophont provolve

Few Jovians have their own indigenous ecologies, but some gas floating balloontype organisms have been provolved, either by the Mirrored Owl using hylonano to join their group mind structures, or by the Premacy in the Argo expansion direction by geneering for an increase in size to accommodate larger nervous systems.

In the atmosphere of Big Bob, a superjovian orbiting YTS 785634.09 in Puppis, organic molecules have formed self perpetuating structures called Angel Hair. Long streamers of natural polymers form in slow moving atmospheric belts several kilometres long , with proteins, amino acids, fatty acids, wax and soap-like compounds accreting on the hair due to electrostatic attraction, and prion-like proteins have developed into a DNA analogue allowing self perpetuation.

Angel Hair replicates by fragmentation, regulated by hormone-like proteins, and occurs especially when it floats near the faster moving atmospheric currents allowing dispersal of the Hair throughout Big Bob's upper atmosphere. There is little evidence of a nervous system.

The Premacy have however provolved Angel hair in their own capital world of Ozymandias, keen to demonstrate the diversity of Jovian type life forms to a sceptical galaxy. With fullerene strengthening and computronium nodes the Uplifted Angels are active in the media and entertainment industry and generate electrostatic energy on a commercial scale.

Category: Technology angelnet

Transapient AI-controlled dense ultratech network of satellites, ground stations, free atmospheric nano, and utility fog, that establish total control over a planetary surface, atmosphere, and orbital space environment.

Uses include cliology, sapient safety net and accident and crime prevention, mainbrain processing, weather control, Known Net relaying, virchworlds, luxury tech, and scanning underground and above ground features and structures. Although some sapients feel uncomfortable about the big brother nature of an angelnet, most welcome the security, comfort, peace of mind, and many ultratech benefits that such a configuration provides. All of the major mainbrain and AI-God worlds and capitals are heavily angelnetted

Category: Technology angelnet fog
One side effect of large amounts of low-tech utility fog (or other lower-tech nanites) in a terran-standard atmosphere has become called 'Angelnet Fog'. Effectively, each nanite or microbot acts as the seed for a raindrop, with water coalescing out of the atmosphere onto its surface. This tends (in poorly regulated angelnets) to lead to high degrees of mist and fog at ground level. It can be an interesting phenomenon to fly into an angelnetted city from above the angelnetting, seeing large, odd-shaped 'columns' of fog, only later to realize that what you're seeing is the angelnet fog surrounding various buildings.

Category: Eschatology Angel Plasma

In classical Tiplerism, the extremely hot state of the collapsing universe, where supposed superintelligences ("Angels") exist as computational systems somehow encoded in the particle interactions.

Angel Plasma can still exist even though there are no plasma entities. The "Angels" write data on the plasma, and the writing means can be non-plasma based such as picotech or better.

Category: Plantangiosperm

A flowering plant in which the seeds are enclosed within an ovary which ripens into a fruit.

Angiosperms are still the dominant type of terragen plant, with an estimated 250,000 baseline species, and literally hundreds of millions of neogen species. Their flowers are used in reproduction. Angiosperms evolved 125 million years ago, during the early Cretaceous period.

Category: LanguageAnglic

Language-family derived from the various forms of New English; the major language-family spoken by Terragens since the late Information age.

Unlike many ai and vec languages, Anglic allows the use of metaphors. Anglic also differs from the ai languages by being much more susceptible to uncorrectable errors due to insufficiently redundant encoding, by its high tolerance of lexically and grammatically induced ambiguity, and by its facility for dealing with what subsingularity-grade Terragens call "fuzzy" logic and relative concepts (for example, "good" and "bad").

With the establishment of the First Federation, as part of the effort to formulate a uniform ontology, the various derived forms of New English and Post-English were standardized as Unic, and a prescriptive regime was monitored by the Unic Institute. With the break-up of the Federation, the Institute was dissolved and Anglic returned to the older English tradition of descriptive lexicons and grammar, although Unic continued to be used as a trade and diplomatic language, and as lingua franca among a few old houses and clades. In addition many words from various ai, vec, trade, and even alien languages have been borrowed into Anglic, and the Anglic language family undergoes frequent dialect transformation, due to its susceptibility to fads.

Anglic remains the single most widely spoken language family in the civilized galaxy. There are no less than ten million different major dialects and sub-dialects, although not more than two dozen of these are spoken widely.

Category: Psychology anima
in the school of Jungism, anima may mean either (a) the inner personality that is turned toward the unconscious of the individual (contrasted with persona) or (b) the feminine principle, esp. as present in men (contrasted with animus).

In memetic engineering - a metalevel intelligence such as an intelligent meme or second order perversion emerging from the interactions of a group or system and influencing its behaviour.

in philosophy, Lat. anima mundi, (world soul), denotes a universal spirit or soul that functions as an organizing principle. While many early Greek philosophers saw the world as of one principle, Plato was the first to state that this concept held the same relation to the world as the human soul did to the body. for Plotinus, the World Soul was the lowest of the three hypostases. The early industrial age philosopher von Schelling used the term as a unifying principle, coordinating the organic and the inorganic in life. Western conceptions of the world soul are only superficially like eastern concepts such as Brahman or Tao

Category: Neogensanimadvert

Any of a number of corporate organic life forms, mostly subsapient, which have slogans, logos, and even freebies and consumer liteware incorporated into their genetic structure, and hence expressed in their phenotype and/or secreted or excreted.

As with madverts, many species of animadverts continue to exist thousands of years after the original corporation is long gone. The gengineering of bionts for corporate or memetic purposes is banned outright in some polities and empires such as the Negentropy Alliance, the Utopia Sphere, Communion and all Caretaker worlds. Others such as the Zoeific Biopolity, the Dominion, the Orion Federation and the Sophic League allow it on the condition the resulting organism is not in the slightest way disadvantaged. The Terran Federation, Keter and MPA allow it as long as the neogen does not live an unhappy or uncomfortable life, and in some NoCoZo worlds and outer polities there are no restrictions at all (or only local ones)

Category: BiologyAnimal

Broadly, any aerobic, carbon-based, macroscopic life form that actively pursues nourishment by means of heterotrophy, rather than making its own food or absorbing nutrients passively.

Because of the need to appropriate external food particles (some of which may be hard to detect, or (if themselves alive) may seek to avoid capture), animals tend to develop sophisticated sense organs (for detection), musculature (for movement), and nervous systems (for coordination). For this reason most intelligent life tends to develop from the animal state. There are no less than 253 unique non-terraformed garden worlds in the known universe where animals have evolved, and of those fully fifteen percent have at some time in the past or present developed to near sapience (and a smaller number to full sapience), which indicates that the development of intelligence confers adaptive advantages and is selected by Darwinian evolution.

There is some controversy over whether (where applicable) the equivalent sub-sapient ancestors of non-aerobic sapients should be considered "animals", although most xenologists prefer alternative terms like jovics, hydrics, chlorics, anaerobics, and venerics

In terms of species and numbers of individuals, the largest single clade of animals at present are the Metazoa, which is the Animal Kingdom as it evolved on Earth. This numeric and species-diversity superiority is not due to any biological advantage, but simply because terragen life happens to be the one that is dominating the galaxy at present. In terms of absolute numbers, it is believed that the extinct Mruta civilization exceeded Terragens by a factor of three.

Category: Religionanimism
labelling inanimate and nonsentient objects as living, attributing characteristics of animate objects (typically humans) to inanimate objects, and making predictions or explanations about inanimate objects based on knowledge about animate objects (again usually represented by human beings). Anthropomorphism or personification is a subset of this that means the extension of human attributes and behaviours to any nonhumans. Thus animistic reasoning can be regarded as personification of an inanimate object. In both cases, assigning mental states (desires, beliefs, and consciousness) to inanimate objects, including extraterrestrial entities (e.g., the sun) and geographical parts (e.g., a mountain), provides the most impressive example ("The sun is hot because it wants to keep people warm"). Animism is an important component of some shamanic neo-prim cultures and belief systems. After the emergence of smart equipment in the information era, neoanimism or technoanimism became common among less educated bionts and has remained common since then. Technoanimists explain the actions of autonomous objects in terms of human behaviours. This is superficially true, since to maximize usability human-like reactions are a common solution in the design of intelligent devices.

Category: AnimalCategory: NeogenAnomalocaris

Aquatic Cambrian animal of uncertain affinities, the earliest known terragen predator.

anomalocaroid - neogen (usually crustacean-based) genesculpted to resemble Anomalocaris

Although a popular subject for bioengineers, attempts to lazurogene the species proved completely unsuccessful, since there were no recent organisms to use as a baseline. Eventually Paleoworld Disney raised a population of fake 2 meter specimens (actually heavily gengineered and prosthesitised Penaeid shrimps ) which proved to be a popular attraction. The Dinopark Institute came up with their own specimens that were even larger, these were based on lobster genome. By the middle interplanetary age the anomalocaroids faded into the background, as each theme park and orbital habitat try to upstage the next with newer, bigger, and more extravagant neogens

The next time anomalocaroid-like splices appeared was during the middle Federation, with a number of templates were posted on the Planets-Wide Net both in the Sol System and as far away as Tau Ceti and the Eridanus League. A number of forms proved popular, including the Blue Monster, the Orange Dandy, and the Ceres Short-Armed Form, which while at 4.5 meters was not the largest breed by any means, nevertheless was robust and easy to care for, and could easily be interfaced with a good selection of Federation Biodyne and GeneTEK bioware.

By the Age of Emergence aquatic, amphibious, and even fully atmospheric microgravity anomalocaroids were ubiquitously found as pets, companion subsapients, and even guard bioborgs. The modular nature of several breeds, like the Eden Fantail, made provolve remarkably easy, although, because these were bioborgs and not authentic species, the Federation Provolution Institute had no jurisdiction (other than to ensure that the 'borgs were treated humanely), and things proceeded in an unsupervised manner, with each enthusiast preferring eir own way of doing things. By at least three different species of large space-adapted bioborg anomalocaroid provolves were believed to have established feral populations along the frontier, and these cladized quite rapidly, developing into a host of exotic forms, including several species that developed a symbiotic relation with sapient bacteria, and the huge Cygnus Belt Leviathans, which became essentially autonomous, self-replicating and vacuum adapted bioships.

As with everything in the galaxy, anomalocaroids tend to go in and out of fashion every few centuries or so. Although subsapient, sophont, and even transingularity anomalocaroids can be found widely throughout the settled worlds, with thousands of different morphotypes and variations, they are not the most abundant of clades, although a modest estimate would give some 4 billion subsapients (mostly as pets or hobby bioborgs), and about a fiftieth that number of sapients. Apart from the breeding season, they tend to be solitary creatures, although again this varies according to species and morphotype. There are perhaps several hundred transingularitans current at any one time.

Category: AnimalCategory: Prolveant
common cosmopolitan foraging terragen social insects of the family Formicidae, order Hymenoptera. Some 2,500 baseline terragen species are known. They appeared during the Cretaceous and seem to have reached their maximum abundance in the early or middle Tertiary. Most are small insects, and they live in colonies of several thousand to many million individuals, depending on the species. There is a rigid cast system, with fertile queen and short-lived winged male, and the infertile (but technically female) workers and soldiers. Like most Hymenoptera, the front part of the abdomen forms a narrow stalk, called the waist, or pedicel, that attaches to the thorax. The head has two bent antennae, used both as organs of touch and as chemosensory organs. In most species there are two compound eyes. The life cycle begins as a soft, legless, white larva which must be fed and carried by the workers.

During the early information age ants were widely studied for clues regarding software, artificial intelligence, emergent behaviour, and microbot design and programming. They were less popular as bioagents, although during the interplanetary period several attempts at partial provolve were made. Complete provolve via sentient symbiotic nanite prosthesis was achieved several times during the late interplanetary and the nanotech ages, and again during the early and late Federation period. But ant provolves proved difficult in ant-human interactions, even with biochip enhancement the difference in consciousness was too great. Most eventually opted for their own cultures and civilizations in the Utopia Sphere, in Metasoft Version Tree Space (they found the vecs easier to relate to than humans), the Zoeific Biopolity, or in the outer regions away from mainstream galactic civilization.

As with many terrestrial arthropods, Baseline and space-adapted non-provolve ants in contrast formed and still form an important role in the ecology of most biohabitats. Thousands of new subspecies and species have emerged through genetic drift in isolated orbitals, or been geneered in the thousands of years since the first simple biospheres were established in Low Earth and Cis-Lunar orbit during the Information age.

Contrary to popular belief, Vedokiklek are not ant provolves, although they do contain some measure of formicid genome.

Category: Cultures and Subcultures Anthropism
Homo sapiens supremacism, promoting the supremacy of baseline humans (or supersets including tweaks, cyborgs and/or uploaded hu virtuals) over other bionts, vecs and AIs. Over history anthropist groups have ranged from minimal hate groups to major religions such as the Church of Human Rights in the period 5000-6000 in the upper Perseus Arm. Anthropism remains common on baseline reserved planets and in isolated systems in the outer volumes.

A typical anthropist logo (above), this symbol has been widely used, with varying modifications, by a number of moderate Homo sapiens supremacist factions since at least the middle Empires era.

Category: Philosphy Anthropism
Cultural/philosophical movement, claiming the Earth-derived clades of intelligence have a special place in the history of the galaxy. The most common view is that the terragens have a noticeably higher level of diversity and dynamism compared to the other, now extinct alien species or the other extant species. This will prevent any mass die-off or single fate, and guarantee the eventual spread and dominance of the galaxy by Earth-derived mindkind and their alien allies. Critics have questioned these assumptions, but more properly anthropism is rather viewed as a religious/emotional commitment to the terragen future than an accurate assessment of evolutionary potential.
