Category: Presophont ape
Apes are Terragen primates that anatomically resemble and are closely related to humans.

Category: Language Aphasism

The view that language is inherently negative and should be abolished. Several aphasist communities exist in the Utopia Sphere and on the Hrek peninsula of Qjellto. Related to antinomism.

Category: Astronomy Category: Astrogation aphelion

For an object (a planet or comet) orbiting the Sun (or any star), the aphelion is the point in its orbit which is farthest from the primary. See also apoapsis, apogee

Category: Astronomy Category: Astrogation aapoapsis

For an object orbiting a celestial body in general, the apoapsis is the point in its orbit which is farthest from that body. Now generally synonymous with apogee

Category: Astronomy Category: Astrogation apogee

Originally for an object orbiting Earth, the apogee is the point in its orbit which is farthest from the Earth or planet. Since the interplanetary period generally used to designate orbiting any planet. Generally synonymous with apoapsis

Category: Math Applied Mathematics

Use of mathematical techniques in an attempt to resolve scientific and engineering problems. Contrast with Pure Mathematics

Category: Occupation Applied Sociologist

similar to "psycho-historian", keeps societies on track

Category: Weapons and Warfare APC
Armoured Personnel Carrier. Basically, any macroscopic wheeled, walker, or ground-effect military, police, or paramilitary AFV, used for transport of personnel. Although only lightly armoured (contrast MIFV) an APC generally provides good protection against light arms fire, chemical, biological, and simple nano weapons, and may or may not be equipped with one or more non-lethal or lethal light projectile and/or energy weapons. Industrial Age to Recent.

Category: Solar System or World Apogee Maximal

Brown dwarf orbiting approx. 1120ly directly galactic North of the Sol system and thus just outside the main plain of the galactic disk. The world is orbited by 14 moons including 6 similar in mass and composition to the Jovian Galilean satellites.

In 5884 a neumann probe was sent to the system and arriving in 6402, deployed several self-replicating fusion units in the Apogeean atmosphere. By the time colonists arrived some two centuries later the equatorial band of the planet had been filled with the light emitting fusion units creating the so-called Sunline which illuminates the entire moon system. Using the energy from the Sunline the colonists (a mix of the space and vacuum adapted, cyborgs and vecs) built a thriving, if relatively bucolic civilization (current pop. 34 million) around their new home. In 6756 a small (10m) wormhole was set up in the system and visitors from the rest of the Known Worlds began to arrive, drawn mostly by the spectacular views of the home galaxy filling the sky. Seeing the opportunity this presented a consortium of Apogeean business conclaves enclosed and terraformed several craters on the largest moon, Apex. Today, the number of domed over craters has risen to over 100 and the spectacular starry nights of Apex are a favourite with vacationers, honeymooners and anyone taking the Grand Tour.

Category: Solar System or World April
Beta Hydri II - Inner Sphere non-aligned world in orbit around variable red subgiant Beta Hydri

Beta Hydri is an old star that has gone into the subgiant stage. At least one inner planet has been swallowed by the star, and another (named July) now exists as a semi-molten rock very close to the star's surface. April, a previously Mars-like world now lies within the habitable zone at 1.9 AU. April had little water but an ideal basic temperature, so it was easy to terraform by Mumlan Terrainvestment in the 1500's. April was a popular early colonization target, but as Beta Hydri began to show signs of increased variability the planet declined. The remaining Aprils adapted themselves and the ecology to the varying degree of temperature, and became the first tweak clade adapted to living around variable stars.

Category: City Aquarius
Aquarius Information age aquatic arcology prototype developed by The First Millennial Foundation as part of their goals to increase the living standards of humans on Earth and in space. It was an authentic arcology because of it's dense structure and self sufficiency. Although only a prototype, and never having more than 10,000 inhabitants, even at its height, it served as the exemplar for other, more successful designs until well into the Interplanetary age.
