Category: Astronomy B-type Star
Hot blue-white star that is among the brightest in the sequence of spectral types, second only to the O-type star. They are distinguished by neutral helium lines, with hydrogen lines strengthening in B6 through B9.

A B0 type star generally has a mass of about 15 to 18 times that of Sol, a luminosity 13,000 times as great, and a surface temperature of around 28,000° Kelvin. In the case of a B5 type the properties are a mass of about 6.4 times, and a luminosity 790 times, and surface temperature of about 15,000° Kelvin. A B0 star, being so hot and bright, will spend only about eleven million years on the main sequence. When it collapses, having exhausted all its fuel, a B type star will most likely become a black hole. These rare stars, only somewhat more common than O-types, very rarely have life-supporting planets, although proto-life and complex molecules may be common. Like the O-types, B-type stars are highly valued by development corporations, industrialist clades and hyperturings, amat farmers, and stellar engineers.

Category: Archailect Babel Key, the

Singular self-evolved intellect which regularly cracks lower-level sentience's security to insert ambiguity and uncertainty into their cross-S-level communications.

This can be as blatant as scrambling a database, so the S>'s thoughts on jelly doughnuts replaces its thoughts on jellyfish and vice versa, to reversing the conversation (last sentence appears first, etc), to falsifying communications, to... you name a dirty trick along these lines and it's used it.

The Babel Key appears to be in the upper-single-digits on the Sophont scale (5<=S<=10), but has managed to elude capture from higher level sophonts, primarily by maintaining rapid routes of retreat which can easily be destroyed behind it. It has been a particular thorn in the side of both the Solarian Empire and the Negentropic Alliance, since both rely so heavily on direct communication with higher level intellects.

Category: Neogen Babel Plague

Human viral infection of artificial origin, likely developed as a bioweapon during the 300's.

The virus is based on the herpes simplex virus and similarly infective. In its latent phase it spreads and hides in nerve ganglia. In its active phase it causes localized lesions in the language centres of the brain, especially Wernicke's area. The result is a profound aphasia where victims cannot comprehend language and speak semantically empty "word salad". Treatment is through gene audit (latent) or implantation of a linguistic prosthesis (active phase).

The Babel plague first became epidemic during the 958 Penglai outbreak; since then it has reappeared several times on undeveloped worlds. In 2654 it caused the Qjellto Disaster, where a pandemic destroyed the colony on Qjellto, so far the most devastating outbreak of the virus. It has been used as an incapacitation weapon in the Perseus Rift conflicts, and a nanotechnological variant, Babel II, was used during the Rojmaneo war and recent Disarchy conflicts.

Category: Physics baby universe

Category: Plant Bacca

Family of crops derived from the tobacco plant through gengineering during the interplanetary era and later.

Designed for use in space hydroponics, different strains produce livestock feed, vegetables, drugs and decorative flowers. Especially common is Qianxuesen, a bacca vegetable eaten by terragen bionts boiled or mashed.

Category: Biology background extinctions

extinctions that occur continually throughout time. These extinctions are caused by small changes in climate or habitat, depleted resources, competition, and other changes that require adaptation and flexibility. Most extinctions (perhaps up to 95 per cent of all extinctions) occur as background extinctions.

Category: Hiders Backgrounder Culture

Culture or group of cultures developed by several cyborg communities that migrated to the oort cloud to escape the nanoplagues. They developed a distinctive cold-based hider culture, and slowly migrated throughout the deep interstellar spaces between the stars. Backgrounders are known to be an important member-phyle of the Shadow Federation.

Category: Civilization backscattering waves

Some early solipsist ai clades that weren't assimilated by the wave front of main terragen empire did not remain in pockets and no-go zones. Rather they cleverly turned things around and decided to do the assimilating themselves. Even some hu colonies have managed this (Nova and Penglai being too early examples)

Category: culture or subculture backyarder

Generic term for nanotech era interplanetary/interstellar colonists who legend says grew ships - virtually from their own backyard - out of nanotech seeds. In fact almost all the backyarders worked in concert with belters, who supplied most of the resources as well as much of the technical and practical expertise in exchange for a stake in any planets claimed. In fact most backyarders who left the Sol System during the 5th century never reached their destinations.

Category: Microorganism bacteria

generic term for any single-celled, microscopic (usually 0.5 to 5 microns, although can be smaller or larger) prokaryote carbon-based biological organisms.

Bacteria do not have to be terragen. May be spherical, rod shaped, spiral, even (on some worlds) amoeboid. Naturally occurring bacterial lifeforms have been found on most life-bearing eogaian, eovenusian, and eoarean worlds. Although bacteria differ greatly in metabolism and chemistry, they share the basic functions of decomposers, autotrophs, and symbionts. Because of their simplicity, rapid reproduction rate, and the ease with which their genetic material can be modified, many kingdoms of bacteria are frequently used for bionano templates and modifications. The term bacterioids is generally given to exotic-chemistry equivalents.

Category: Biotech bacterics

Use of bacteria in biotech - e.g. as simple biobots, as bionano processing nodes, and more

Bacterial neogens (microbial biobots) are easily and cheaply made by designing a biochemical reaction network that reacts in a suitable way to outside stimuli such as chemicals or light, and connecting it to various extra genes controlling the behaviour of the bacteria or the production of other chemicals. This way the bacteria can be made to perform quite elaborate tasks, and often several kinds of bacteria are used together. More complex applications require the use of bionano, symbiotic and viral wetware, and other exotic applications, some of which have been widely used since the interplanetary age, whilst others are more recent or limited in popularity

Category: Biology Bacteriology

Subdividision of microbiology that deals with the study of bacteria and other terragen prokaryote life forms

Fields of study and specialization include bacterial taxonomy and phylogeny, physiological and genetic structure, bacterics and other bionano applications, biochemistry, toxins, metabolism, structure, antibiotics, prokaryote ecology, and more.

Category: Philosophy bad philosophy

Generally, philosophical arguments or theses that is poorly thought out, makes sloppy use of reason, is deliberately devious or or misleading, etc.

Bad philosophy memes are remarkably tenacious among less educated and intelligent sentients. Some nuage groups, militant supremacists, a number of paranoid polities and clades, and some baseline religious sects are the worst users of bad philosophy. A number of small and disreputable NoCoZo polities (often little more than a single small orbital) make a good income from giving out pseudodoctorate crests and certificates, which delude the recipient into thinking e really is qualified to talk on these subjects.

Category: Geography badlands

generic term for any barren, severely eroded places on terraformed or quasi-terraformed, garden or quasi-garden terrestrial planets, where the land is useless for habitation, farming or other human purposes. Most badlands are terrible desolate windswept places, but in some cases soft rock layers are sculpted into beautiful forms, and exposed rock layers may contain fossils and other interesting finds.

Category: popculture bAdmod

antihero low grade adventure sim interactive and 3d created by the SI:2 hyperturing Seroz 12 ( Radwin-Ho Orbital Band, Dorminy Iv, NoCoZo) in 8412 "to amuse my humans"

bAdmod is a disadvantaged near-baseline who uses massive modular cyber- and bio-augmentation ("mods") to enhance his capacities. While always getting into trouble with other beings, clades, and polities, pursued by both the authorities and criminal organizations, bAdmod and his friends (including Khan the gruff but good-hearted Cyborg, the beautiful hermaphrodite Janeis, and the rambunctious clonesplice symbiote BapIYapDapBhapZap (or Bap, IYap, Dap, Bhap and Zap when separate) always manage to come on top in the end. The original bAdmod series ran to 24,319 episode modules. Seroz 12 emself expressed surprise at how successful the series was. During the late re-evaluation period it was syndicated out to 205 franchises across the NoCoZo

Since the the 9200's the character has somewhat gone out of fashion (although generally there is always a bunch of bAdmod, Khan, Janeis or BapIYapDapBhapZap wannabes somewhere in the galaxy). It is not unusual for a socially, genomically, and technologically disadvantaged near-baseline from the poorer regions where the series remains popular to give emself the nickname (or be so called by others) "bAdmod"

Category: Religion Balany Valus

Literalist memoid sect of mostly nearbaselines and free madverts that originated on Kuranaba (Sophic League) and claim that the ruling Mind of that system, Valusaban, is a full incarnation of the Sophic Archailect The Blessed One, who in turn is the Only Personality of the Absolute Reality.

With the opening of the Kuranaba Gate they become a common sight at many ports and terminals throughout the Nexus, where they offer free wetware and augments, and distribute nanoclones of the Anandayanna Nirvana and Valusaban Purusha godbooks.

Category: Neogen bamaglider

Bamagliders are explosive filigliders. These range in composition. Some are merely normal filigliders with carbonated or nitrous oxide injected filling. Others are non-edible filigliders that produce a small fire-cracker explosion at a safe distance from the appropriate pheromone source. Additionally, like the poisiglider, there are some maliciously designed bamagliders that explode with damaging force in close proximity to a particular pheromone source.

Category: Subversives The Ban of Silence

This hider clade has publicly announced its goal of preventing powerful signals from leaving the known galaxy, regardless of the cost, for fear of drawing attention of beings with technology beyond human ken.

They are adamant in their belief of the threat posed by such beings as the supposed Dawn Hunters and the Leviathan.

They have claimed responsibility for several setbacks encountered by the Seekers, and have warned all personnel not directly related to the Seeker movement that activity, either physical or through the Known Net, involved in the Seeker's system, are at significant risk.

There is significant uncertainty of this clade's origins and composition. There is some evidence that this is a baseline-only organization, but the likelihood of such a clade's successful repeat operations is exceedingly small. No member of this clade have been caught in a state conducive to post-mortem interrogation.

Category: Megastructure Banks Orbital

Megastructure habitat shaped as a rotating ring with a radius of several million kilometres.

The rotation provides gravity, and for a suitable radius also a standard terragen day length. Atmosphere is kept in place using edge shields. Often only part of the circumference is covered with habitat, and further sections added when needed or economy allows. The structure orbits a star in the biozone and for all practical purposes acts as a cylindric planet to inhabitants.

The Banks Orbitals were named after the first orbital, built in the Gordelpus system (MPA) 2226. This was in turn named after the information age fabulist Iain M. Banks who had originally suggested the structure. While common in transapient- and godtech-based systems, to date a handful of orbitals have been constructed in lower tech regions; the need for femtotech manufactured structural materials (usually gluonic string or stabilized exotic matter streams) makes them extremely expensive and habitat swarms are usually constructed instead

Current Allegiance: Keter

Europan type moon of Garell, a major gas giant.

Became a colony of European tweaks, who installed the extensive ice transportation system of the colony. During the late federation the otherwise unremarkable colony suddenly, for complex taxation reasons, became a haven of high finance, terraforming funding and space engineering. The golden days lasted for nearly two centuries before fading. Many of the Barawatten tweaks gradually came to embrace Keterism, developing many highly obscure and radical enhancements and incorporating nanotech into their bodies. In 3100 migration began into the atmosphere of Garell, and now the system is home to further cladized posthumans.

Category: Plants Category: Weapon Barb-wire Bush

The Barb-wire Bush is a genetic construct designed for use in low tech entrenched fortifications, kind of like the West Front in the first world war of Old Earth.

The plant consists of a central mass of roots, from which radiates a multitude of ground-hugging vines. Those vines have an incredible tensile strength and are studded with 10-centimetre, razor-sharp barbs (which in some breeds are poisonous).

The purpose of the plant is to inhibit a person trying to traverse the area on foot, tangling eir clothes, and shredding every spot of bare skin they can find. If the person stumbles and falls, e definitely won't get up again without assistance. The Barb-wire Bushes tends to be the last things to mark old battle-fields, sometimes prevailing hundreds of years after the war in which they were seeded ended.

Category: Esotericism Bardo
In Tantric Buddhism, the interval or intermediate state between two states, such as between two births. Buddhism teaches that all existence is impermanent, and hence consists of a series of intervals. The term become popularized through the The Tibetan Book of the Dead (Bar do thos sgrol (bar-do tho-dol), "Liberation through Hearing in the Bardo"). According to Tibetan doctrine there are six bardos: the bardo of birth, the bardo of dreams, the bardo of samadhi (meditation), the bardo of the moment before death, the bardo of dharmata (experience of Reality), and the bardo of becoming or rebirth. The Bardo Thodol describes the last three of these, and is traditionally recited in the presence of the deceased believed to be experiencing these states, usually for a total period of 49 days. It is believed that the teaching contained in the text can enable the deceased to attain liberation while in the bardo states, or at least to attain the best possible rebirth. The memetic was popularized and misinterpreted by the atomic age visionary and pharmacologist Timothy Leary, incorporated into the NuAge movement, and became an influential motif for esotericists throughout much of the interplanetary period. The Gengineer Republic were among those who further reinterpreted and misinterpreted the memetic, while in the Cis-Lunar orbitals and on Earth Tibetans and Tibetophiles were trying to restore the original meaning. By the first Federation period the GenoGenetekker pharmo-bardic approach had won out, and much derived and mythopoeticised elements of Learyism and Pharmobardism can be found among some Genen, post-erotocracy, erogenic, and other phyles and clades to this present day

Category: Weapon Barovam Class Fighting Nano

Quasi-arachnoform macronano originally used by the Empires Age Varadic Hegemony.

Even after the Hegemony was dismantled, the Barovam remained a popular weapon-platform, the template widely distributed, and innumerable variations and minor revisions of the original design can still be found among many small polities away from the main nexus
Although in no way a match to higher transingularity fighting artifacts or ISO-linked units, the Barovam is a formidable unit in any S<1 battlefield. The slaved ai is rated SI:1 equivalent. The great squat armoured and clawed spiderlike hylonano weapon platform can mass up to 45 tonnes, and be up to 6 meters wide across the carapace. The typical Barovam bristles with hardpoints for weapon-attachments, and clusters of red sensor eyes are preternaturally bright with hyperturing intelligence. It is protected with nano-reactive armour, is capable of moving at startling speed despite its bulk, and has a targeting system that could hit a gnatbot at 1000 km in optimal (vacuum) conditions.

There is a display of several mid Empires Age Varadic Barovam Type E4s with full regalia in stasis at the Imperial War Museum, Raphael Orbital Band, Fons Luminis

Category: Solar System or World Barzelona
In the STC periphery the long lived clade Gaudi of augmented posthumans have been resculpting the surface of their paludian subclass planet, Barzelona, by hand for three thousand years to date (10402 c.e.)

Having made their own tools, starting with flint, obsidian and microliths, they have mined and smelted to produce bronze and iron tools themselves.

Quarrying into the surface of the planet, they have begun to construct by hand an architectural shell world, with an elaborately designed system of underground crypts, undercrofts, buttresses, spandrels and squinches supporting the superstructure of towers, arches, bridges, spires and rotundas reaching kilometres into the sky.

As a long-lived hobbyist clade they have decided to incorporate many different architectural styles, including sumerian, khmer, romanesque, gothic, coronese, new Daffy fuddite, Pardes corporate and minimum surface fractal.

Unfortunately the champions of the different styles often come into disagreement, either resulting in bizarre piecemeal mismatched compromises or actual armed conflict, limited by tradition to mason's tools.

The use of treadmill driven cranes, bioid drawn conveyances and bioid powered mills is permitted, together with wind and water power, but no heat engines are allowed. Extensive roof gardens provide food for the Gaudi clade and for the large beasts of burden (Cyberoxen) who also maintain a link with the Known net and monitor the populations' physical and mental health.

Category: Geology basalt

hard, dark igneous rock, composed of 45 to 54 percent silica (SiO2) and often rich in iron and magnesium. Basalt is the most common type of rock in the crusts of many terrestrial worlds (especially Selenian, Arean, Venusian, and Gaian worlds)

Category: baseline and near-baseline clades baseline

In this context, a human (or other biont) that has not been genomically modified from its original natural condition. Pure baselines are extremely rare; most sentients classed as "baseline" are actually nearbaselines that are very similar in phenotype and genotype to the original H. spaiens sapiens

Category: Culture and Society baseline ascent, problems of failed
A widespread social problem in the civilized worlds - especially those regions outside the angelnetted capitals, is the problem of baseline intelligent sophonts - especially near-baseline humans and equivalents of other races, attempting to their way to the higher toposophic levels without suitable preparation

Toposophic ascent requires more than increasing complexity or information processing power. It is also a psychological-noetic process of holistically integrating the immense amount of new data. And rather than being about thinking more, it is about thinking differently, and more effectively. Hence, although a great many SI:<1's try to attain SI:1, very few succeed. A minority of those with sufficient dedication, discipline, a grounded balanced attitude, and a pretty good grasp of what is involved, do so. A larger number of those only get to superbright and are satisfied to remain there. Rather more nearbaselines bungle things. Maybe they cannot afford the recommended the Level 3 Education Modules, or decide to skip on the neural net integration wetware. The galaxy is littered with billions of burnt-out nearbaselines, the result of bungled ascensions, wondering the moving walkways and the orbital megaplexes, or cared for in homes, staring into space or muttering disjointed fragments of Elementary Keterese Unification Supersymmetry Physics Metatheorems, usually harmless to everyone except emself (they may tend to want to poke a 5D20+ jack into their standard virchplay pimplesocket for example)...

Seeing this human refuse, many other baseline-intelligence sophonts feel thankful for what they have, and decide to remain at SI:<1. And it is not uncommon, in some less regulated polities for the ruling hyperturings, fearing destabilization from too many ascended baselines, or simply wishing to keep the sentients under them at the same low level, not only leave the burn-outs on the street and ensure they always have enough to eat, enough shelter etc, but do nothing to help them, and even prevent others from helping them. So they are a sort of walking, staring, mumbling, dribbling reminder to the others to stay in their (toposophic) place. Organisations like the Baseline Charity League and The Society for Compassionate Treatment of SI:<1 generally do everything they can to expose these memetically manipulative ai

Category: Psychology Baseline Hyperdependency Syndrome

Psychological/Behavioural Dysfunction common to many SI:<1 in S=>1 environments

A chronic problem throughout much of the civilized galaxy that effects not only baseline hu but also tweaks, splices, provolves, rianths, bio- and cyborgs, vecs, virtuals, and even superiors. As a result of entrenched dependence on SI:1 and higher powers and their infrastructure and angelnets for almost every aspect of their existence, amost every SI:<1 under hyperturing or transingularitan care has to a greater or lesser extent lost all sense of independence or maturity, and become arrested at a childghood level. The sophont sees the hyperturing or power as a benign parental figure, not unlike the Old Earth conception of a gift-giving supernatural deity or "Santa Claus Machine in the Sky" that many simply sentients pray to for the slightest material favours ("please God can I have a new hovercar", etc). But whereas the practitioners of Old Earth dependency religions rarely saw any practical results from such attempted wish-fulfillment behaviors, sentients under the care of baseline-friendly SI:1 can and often do have their slightest wishes fulfilled. This ranges from nanoreplicators that can produce any object, to special gifts given directly by their Zars

While non-simm comparison is sometimes difficult due to the rarety of r/l feral baselines (although there are a few good breeding populations in special reserves in the Metasoft Empire and elsewhere, as well as genuine wild specimens in some of the outer volumes), simulation studies show that compared to an ideal "wild" hu, a BHS hu suffers from inability to defer pleasure, insensitivity to the needs of other sentients, hypertrophied egotism, self-centeredness, anxiety in unfamilar settings, and tendency to temper tantrums and emotional outbursts. These symptoms may be mild or developed to a pathological degree, depending on the individual, the environment, the degree of memetic modification, and the treatment by their Zar.

Despite popular opinion to the contrary (especially among the SI:<1 themselves), it is not true that the sophonts in the Utopia Sphere suffer from a higher degree of BHS than those of other empires. It is also not true that Tuphz are more psychologically healthy than BHS sentients

Battle of Erson, 42 Tauri IV. One of the most bitter battles of the Second Empires War. As Metasoft dropped four million Orbit-Ground Occupation Units onto the continent Erson, the Geminga Orthodoxy used their remaining stockpiles of antimatter to open magma chambers in the Lense range. The resulting massive eruption flooded 58% of Erson with lava, halting the OGOU advance, killing 120,000 civilians who could not be evacuated and permanently unbalancing the planetary climate. Category: Weapons and Warfare Battle of the Fringe

The climactic battle between the military forces of the Quasa'an Dynasty and the Tsutari Ambastory, which resulted in the collapse of the Quasa'an Dynasty in the year 2415, and brought an end to centuries of cruel dictatorships on the planet Mandra QuinSi by a series of sadistic rulers known as the Terrorlords.

The battle is so called after The Fringe, a series of asteroid belts in the Mu Herculis system. The direct military intervention by the Taii Theocracy, a po-led confederation of religious-oriented worlds, on the side of the Tsutari Ambastory, led to fierce fighting for the strategic belts. When it was over the Quasa'an Dynasty had lost not only the best part of its Fleet, but also most of its industrial facilities and resource base, and the Terrorlords' reign was soon over.
