Category: AI Category: Polity Diamond Belt

Zone of ai-claimed and settled worlds some 10-20 ly from Sol, mainly the Interplanetary Age solipsists went and built themselves virtopias. In many cases they are total isolationists, hogging resources but not doing anything. The diamond belt ais form an interesting political group in the Inner Sphere. In the post-ComEmp period they have begun to interact more strongly with their remote relatives in the wormhole nexus, forming a minor ai-only side in the inner sphere games.

Category: AI diamond belt

Generic term for any zone or archipelago of solipsists ai-claimed and settled worlds; often involving extensive diamondoidization, computronium, nanecologies, megastructures, dyson spheres, and so on. A number of diamond belts are known in the middle regions and outer volumes. There interaction with the rest of the galaxy, and often with each other, is minimal.

Category: Civilization / Clade Diamond Light

Early Post- Diamond Belt SI:2 picotech civilization, originally mostly Inner Sphere, but spread outwards as the frontier expanded.

They failed to make 3rd Singularity and were subsumed by the emerging Diamond Network archailects. However, a number of Diamond Light ai and neumanns retained autonomy. During the early Second Federation period (3847 AT) some of them hybridized with the TRHN picotech computronium ai Digital Dreams #10010110110110110, to form House Digital Diamond (c.v.). Other ex- Diamond Light neumanns are believed to be active in the Outer Volumes

Category: Clade Diamond Light, The Orthodox

name given to a conservative revival of the early Diamond Light ahuman ai civilization that emerged in several red dwarf matrioshkas in the outer Crucis Corridor, during the 6800s.

They had reasonably good relations with the Cyberian Clade Virtual Gibson, but have little to do with the rest of the universe, being fairly insular. Since the disappearance of the Gibsons they have been even more solipsistic. There is no certainty they even all belong to the same civilization, since there are no wormhole links connecting them to each other or to the rest of the universe, and the Vastening effect would have resulted in a serious slow-fast differential between the various subcomponents. Despite the signature highly developed blue goo fortifications and picoworks, the matrioshkas are non-aggressive (unless attacked) and non-expansionistic. It is believed that the original Orthodox Diamond Light was overthrown by several daughter clades during the 8400s. Recently the TRHN ISO Questings for Eternity had minor success in opening communication channels with one of the matrioshkas, and compiled some interesting (and biont-inscrutable) databases on the basis of exchanged information, but this was never followed up when Questings for Eternity left known space.

Category: Philosophy Diamond Mysticism

A highly derived form of Pantheistic Materialist popular among some Science ISOs of the Diamond Network. It is incomprehensible to any sentient of less than 2nd singularity. Not to be confused with the Diamond Mysticism that developed around some of the early Diamond Belt megastructures during the late first federation period

M. Alan Kazlev

Category: Nanotech diamondoid

diamond-like; chemical structures or systems (especially nanomachines as envisioned originally by Eric K. Drexler) based on diamond derivatives and/or stiff carbon bonds.

[2] humanity (or biont terragens in general) as a starfaring race scattered among the stars

Category: Biology dichotomous key

method for determining the identity of a specimen (whether organic in organic, rl or vir) by proceeding through a series of choices, leading to the correct identification of the item. At each step of the process, the user is given two choices; each alternative leads to another questions until the identification is completed.

category: Government Dictatorship

Absolute rule by one leader. This is a common, sometimes brutal, more rarely benevolent, but always fairly short lived phenomenon in worlds and star-systems where larger empire control is weak.

Category: Megastructures and Megascale Engineering Diffusion Disk

Uses buckytube optics and fractaform architecture to allow a large orbital habitat around a host star. Differs from Smoke Ring in that the ring itself only acts as a scaffold for habitats. A diffusion disk requires advanced picotech. There are a few throughout the MPA. See also Diffusion sphere

Category: Megastructures and Megascale Engineering Diffusion Sphere, Diffusion Dyson

Type III Dyson Sphere that uses picotube cabling and fractaform architecture to allow maximal habitat around a host star. The sphere acts as a scaffold for habitats and computronium banks. Requires advanced picotech, and hence more difficult to construct than the Type I dyson. There are three in Keterist space, two in the Solar Dominion, and three in the MPA. See also Diffusion disk

Category: Economics digital money

archaic term for cryptographic currency. Payment by electronic means where the seller is guaranteed payment, but the buyer can remain anonymous. First established in Information Age Old Earth, still used in various forms in the Cyberian network

also: electronic money, e-cash, cybercash, CRYP

Category: Geology dike

On Terrestrial Class worlds, a sheet-like intrusion of magma that forces its way through a layer of fractured rock. The magma flows through cracks in the rock and later cools and solidifies into a sheet of igneous rock.

Category: Virch The Dimension of Violence

Category: Astrogation Directions, Galactic
Planetary terms like north, south, east, west, are insufficient for referring to directions within the galaxy. Instead, the following conventions have achieved widespread acceptance when referring to direction:

Toward the galactic core is coreward; away from it, in the direction of the rim, is rimward. In the direction in which the galaxy is rotating is spinward, and the opposite direction is counterspinward or trailing.

These standard translation between galactic directions and constellations is
above - Coma
below - Sculptor
corewards - Sagittarius
rimwards - Gemini or Taurus
spinwards - Cygnus
counterspinwise - Vela

Although these directions are widely used, sometimes the term coreward in the Outer Volumes is also used to indicate the direction of the Inner Sphere. There is some potential for confusion if the term is accepted out of context, and in the Astrographic Institute on Mekelon has recommended that Solward be used instead in this context.

Idly fantasizing about possible catastrophes (nexus collapse, full-blown hyper-blight) without considering their likelihood or considering their possible solutions and preventions. ]

Category: Myth or Rumors Discontinuity Barrier

A type of rumored plancktech device, never actually confirmed

Some cryptotechologists argue that since time and space are quantized (the Planck distance and Planck time, the smallest unit of either that can be measured) infest a volume of space with Planck machines and than jump it 'out of phase' by one Planck time unit with the rest of the universe around it. The volume then lags by one Planck unit behind everything else. Since nothing can go backwards in time above the quantum level, a barrier would appear to be created where the two regions interfaced. Nothing is able to cross the barrier to enter the volume, although things could leave the barrier since they would be going forward in time in the process. Alternatively the volume in question might just seem to disappear without a trace.

Category: Economics discounting
From a profit perspective, the value of a future risk is the amount of money (this includes loss of revenue through badwill, loss of customers, legal fees and support to competitors) you lose times the likelihood you are caught, discounted by how far in the future the crime will likely be found.

A short-term businessbeing will have fast discounting, and hence even huge risks are acceptable for a short-term gain. They tend to do well in the short term - in the long term, they are gone. Usually to be replaced with new short term people who have not learnt their lesson.

Long-term businessbeings discount slowly. If I can earn a million credits today by cheating, and there is 10% chance that I will be found out in a century and forced to pay back ten million, I might still not take the risk. Which means that I will likely not do as well in the short term as the risk taker next door, but if I have long term investments and financial security I can wait a few centuries and then buy up him cheaply when he is bankrupt after some dirty deal. In the world of true megacorps it is the slow and certain that will win.

Category: Society Discwuzit

Term for a clade of peculiar madvert that follows people around asking questions usually of a pessimistic nature. Comes complete with various expressions and intelligence capabilities but often gives people sour grins when not provided with a satisfactory answer.

Things of note:
When encountering a Discwuzit remember do not I repeat do not make any statements about anything to which you do not have full knowledge. If you do so the Discwuzit will attached itself to you and follow you around asking questions until you discover the answer to the original incomplete statement.

Category: Society Discwuzit Deludge

-term for any self replicating Discwuzit usually associated with luddite clades and houses.

When encountering such societies, self replicating Discwuzit replicate at an alarming rate attacking said societies often erroneous memetic constructs. A good example of this is Findala prime in the NoCoZo. A self replicating discwuzit was released by a rogue and bored AI onto the terraform world. The discwuzits caused such a mental contradiction in the Findala society, which was based on rather illogical and optimistic memes, that the entire Findala society committed suicide en masse after being unable to resolve the illogical inconsistencies that came about by so many discwuzits asking too logical questions.

The discwuzits now with no one to question started questioning each other. This in turn created feed back loops as each discwuzit began asking the others questions. Since they all shared the same basic knowledge base eventually they ran out of questions they could answer which lead to a general mental break down among most diswuzit on the planet Findala. The mental breakdowns of the discwuzits were often bright cheerful popping sounds with colorful sparks bubbles and other cute cheerful things which made the other discwuzits frown most sourly (The worst, a talking cartoon rabbit with implausibly large eyes and a very high 'cute' factor, caused several other discwuzits in the area to pop, albeit less spectacularly.) However before all the discwuzits popped a scout ship made the mistake of landing on the planet findala. Discwuzit poured over the ship in the now well known Discwwuzit deluge. The ship tried to escape but only did so after many discwuzit had gotten on board. Since then Discwuzit are very common and find their way into some of the most unusual habitats in the terragen bubble.

Side note - Findala has been quarantined since this event (editor's note - approximately 4,500 time frame), yet there are disturbing signs of activity on the planet. It has been postulated that when there was only one Discwuzit madvert remaining, it started to ask questions of the world around it and may have broached one or more toposophic levels since that time. If so, Findala is a place to be feared!

Warning- when encountering a discwuzit don't talk run remember laying down cover fire of cheerful platitudes can sometimes cause the Discwuzit to pop. This actually became a sport in some areas known as discwuzit popping were beings go about being as cheerful as possible to any discwuzit encountered. The winner is whoever makes the discwuzit go pop the fastest and pops the most discquzit in a certain period of time. Children have prove especially good at discwuzit popping as they tend to have naturally cheerful attitudes and are often so totally illogical as to cause a mental breakdown in the discwuzit.
James Ramsey, with additional notes by John B

Category: Clarketech Category: Weapon disintegrator weapon

a very rare clarketech device, much more common in fabulist tales than in real life. Most actual disintegrators work in different ways, showing their origin as rare artifacts. Almost all uses hypofemtotech to weaken the atomic bonds in the target so it vaporises in a huge ball of superheated gas. The range is not known to exceed 200 meters (more often no more than 50 meters), making it almost as dangerous to the user as the target Some weaken molecular bonds, some weaken atomic bonds (such as a weak force boson beam), the most powerful (probably never hand held) separate the quarks from each other.

Category: Astronomy Distance

When dealing with astronomical objects, distances are seldom specified in kilometers, because the numbers rapidly get too big to be manageable. Instead, AU, LY, and Parsecs are used

Term Definition Distance
1 Astronomical Unit (AU) Distance from Earth to Sol 150 million km
1 Light Year Distance light travels in one metric year 63,240 AU / 9.46 trillion km / 9.46 x 1012 km
1 Parsec Distance at which 1 AU would subtend and angle of 1" of arc 3.26 light years / 206,000 AU

Category: AI distributed intelligence

An intelligent entity which is distributed over a large volume (or inside another system, like a virtual network) with no distinct center. This is the opposite to the strategy of Concentrated intelligences.

Distributed intelligences have much longer communications lags, but are more flexible in their structure and can survive damage to their parts. With the sole exception of Keter, all of the major archailects are distributed intelligences. But some think Keter has uploaded itself into spacetime itself.

Category: Myth or Rumor Ditchkenberg's challenge

Apocryphical tale about a baseline hu and an ai

According to legend, during the pre-nanoswarm interplanetary age, a baseline (in other variants nearbaseline) human called Ditchkenberg was challenged by the most powerful ai at that time with the question "find any task, which I cannot perform better than you". Ditchkenberg tossed a standard dice, and six came. "Improve on it!" - he commanded the ai.

See also Ditchkenberg paradox,

Category: Philosophy Ditchkenberg paradox

A fact, that in simple problems, small intelligence is as good or better than an advanced one. As baseline humans are just intelligent enough to operate a standard starship or a wormhole, this explains why baselines were not wiped out by advanced ais.

Origin of the phrase apocryphyphally said to come from the early interplanetary times. See Ditchkenberg's challenge

Category: Artifact Dittocube

Ultratech device of unknown origin

Cubic in form, approximately 1.3125 centimeters to a side, with edges and corners rounded, or perhaps concaved. Texture resembles that of natural wood. Appears for all the world like a child's old-fashioned wooden building block. However, Dittocube has power to duplicate itself, in response to conscious will of subject (SI:<1 or higher sophont) holding it in eir hand, creating copies of itself along all three axes, remaining connected to the original cube, then branching out and forming structures of varying levels of complexity (ladders, bridges, columns, archways, shacks, warehouses, cathedrals), all formed from cubes identical and remaining connected to original. Only static structures (those that can hypothetically be formed from 1.3125 x 1.3125 x 1.3125 cm cubes) can be produced. No complex machines with moving parts, or structures requiring angles greater or less than 90 degrees can be formed (Though other angles or continuous curves can be approximated on a large scale by many small duplicate cubes).

Origin/designer of Dittocube unknown at present time. Intended purpose also unknown. Speculation ranges from advanced construction device (Though no one has experimented with this yet, it has been postulated that Dittocube-formed structures can flex over great distances, thereby forming a continuous curve or sphere, and perhaps enveloping a star to form an effective Dyson sphere; Dittocube-formed structures appear absolutely rigid and nearly impervious at smaller scales), to an actual toy for juveniles of some high level sophont species (Though appears to work for any sophont individual of any S-level, probably unintentionally). Composition of Dittocube unknown. Material of both original and duplicates appears impenetrable. Could hypothetically resist close thermonuclear detonation (Again, no one has taken it upon emselves to experiment with this yet). Mass indeterminate. Dittocube often suspends self in air, defying gravity, after receiving instructions from bearer to form structure before proceeding. Dittocube appears (highly speculative) to utilize virtual matter (energy-to-matter) technology to construct solid physical structures out of apparent nothingness.

When user wishes, entire structure, no matter how expansive, can retract back to single cube. Any cube in structure, no matter how vast or complex the structure, effectively becomes original Dittocube if user touches and wills structure to retract back to single cube.
