Em to Eo

Category: Esotericism emanation

The process whereby the infinite transcendent Absolute or Godhead transforms Emself into the cosmos, by means of sequential stages of "outpouring" of Eir being into more and more finite and separative states. A central theme in many different esotericist cosmologies

Category: Memetics embryomeme

Suggestion of a new meme to be used in a group with a shared set of knowledge. Usually made by somebody with an inflated ego trying to coin the phrase.

Category: Evolution emergence

The process whereby more Complex systems arise from simpler systems. Emergence is unanticipated and cannot be directly deduced from the lower-level behaviors. Usually, The nature and behaviour of the more complex system cannot be defined in terms of its components. For example, the organization of a nanecology is said to emerge from the interactions of the lower-level behaviors of the nanites, and not from any single nanite.

Category: Biology emergents

giant trees (or ecological equivalents, whether biological, alife, or nanecological ) that are much higher than the average canopy height, or vaster than the average size.

Terragen emergents provide habitats for many birds and insects in dry environments. On worlds like Gilboa Reach, Linne, and Trees, giant trees are home to entire ecosystems. On Okeanos, gengineered tube worm turret-reefs fulfil the same role in a marine environment

Category: Toposophy emergents

higher toposophic clades, societies, logospheres, or nanecologies that appear out of a lower toposophic (usually SI:<1) milieu.

Emergents often form the nucleus for local SI:<1 polities, societies, or memeticities to develop around, often flourishing, although there are also cases of emergents that were neutral or even (less frequently) hostile towards the subsingularitists.

Category: astronomy emission nebula

a nebula that emits light. Emission nebulae are formed when energetic ultraviolet light from a very hot star excites a cloud of hydrogen gas; the UV radiation ionizes the hydrogen, stripping the electrons from the hydrogen atoms. The free electrons combine with protons, reddish light being produced when electrons and protons combine to reform hydrogen atoms.

Category: Physics emission spectrum

discontinuous spectrum, consisting of bright bands, that is emitted by atoms or molecules. Each chemical element and compound has its own distinct emission spectrum

Category: Society Emotionlet

a term used for subprograms targeted at emotional feedback to perceived events.

These are not uncommon in those which deal with 'meatlings' - that is, lifeforms primarily operated from a biological substrate. They are typically set to 'advise', but many clades have over the years modified theirs to include 'notice' and 'exist' modes, either less or more integrated respectively. Some 'exist' mode users have fully integrated emotional lives, some in ways baselines would consider superior to baseline humanity, others in ways baselines would find incomprehensible. Hence, even baselines may utilize/require emotionlets in areas which do not subscribe to the baselinocentric emotional purview.

Category: Occupation Emotive Translation Expert

The preeminent speciality of the translation field, ETE's are capable of decoding the appropriate emotional state which would be generated in a recipient of the transmitter's memeset and encoding an appropriate concept in the memeset of the recipient. Mindworker profession.

Category: AI clade Empai

Empathic AI, aioids equipped with social cognition systems.

Although even early AI learned or were designed to recognize, imitate and manipulate bioid emotions, true empai is able to integrate this with the internal aioid emotional representations in a flexible way. Today empai mainly refers to the basic solutions and templates developed in the Communion of Worlds during the late Empires Era, the so called Thyme Translations, the Ummervall Emtologies and the Third MyBah Memetics. As empai is able to deal with not just divergent bioid emotional systems but also alien and aioid emotional systems, many advanced empai act as transclade interfacers.

Category: Politics and Government Empaiocracy

Rulership by empai.

Political view in the Communion of Worlds and parts of the Dominion. In the Communion empaiocrats supports leaving more of governance in the hands of hyperturing empai systems or even Utopia-style autotopias. Communion empaiocrats often call themselves aphroditeans, after the collective hyperturing archetype of the Communion hyperturing empais. The Dominion empaiocrats support the idea of introducing Communion empai code into the Divine Order. This is officially regarded as a mild politicotechnological heterodoxy that has been firmly rejected by both religious and sociological officials.

Category: Su Clade or Phyle empath

Su diplomatic clade characterized by very developed empathy and emotional I.Q. index. The ruling oligarchy of the Communion of Worlds

Category: Society Empathy and Deductive Telepathy

The ability of certain baselines or nearbaselines to identify with other people to such an extent that they feel powerful empathy with them was analyzed during the Information and Interplanetary age and algorithms were produced to emulate this ability in the first turing grade intelligences. The researchers hoped to achieve the creation of so- called Friendly AI, with varying degrees of success.

The resulting field of empathy studies produced a deeper understanding of the process of empathy, or identification with the other, and this field became the speciality of a clade of augmented humans which were found throughout the early solar system colonies, and in the Eridanus League and Terranovan colonies in particular. Later the Empathic Communion of Worlds developed into a major distributed empire and diplomatic clade.

The artificial empathy algorithms of the Hyperturings eventually evolved into advanced realtime character modelling, so that an advanced AI would constantly check it's own predictions of a citizen bioid's actions and responses against the reality, monitoring speech, heart rate, boy temperature and body language to assess the citizen's internal state non-intrusively.

A high resolution model of the citizen's internal thought processes could be built up over time, replacing the need for intrusive mind scans in most cases.

Category: Government Empire
[1] Political system in which all of the member planets are controlled by one government, usually based on one planet which is considered the heart of the empire. All other planets may be treated as colonies, provinces, or states of the empire. Because an empire tries to control everything from one place, it is often corrupt or loaded with layers of bureaucracy.

[2] any large, cohesive interstellar polity.

[3] The dominion of an archailect

Category: Empire Time

as a result of time-dilation resulting from a relativistic colony flight, or from towing a artificial wormhole to a new colony or outpost at relativistic speed, the local time of that outpost is behind relative to the core or inner sphere. Generally the difference is not very great.

Category: Weapons and Warfare Empires Wars

Second Federation and later term for two major and several minor interstellar wars rimwards of Sol during the Age of Empires. They saw the S>2 and especially archailect empires gain ground over the earlier SI:1 and SI:2 governed empires

The two most important of these were the (earlier) Nexus War (involving the breakup of the Taurus Nexus) and the (later) Conver Wars (involving out-of-control elements in the Conver Ambi, presumably the result of subversion by a perverse or ahuman ai).

Category: History Empires, Age of

Generally, the period from 3200 - 3800, although sometimes it is used to designate the preceding and following few centuries as well. This turbulent period marked a water-shed in galactic civilization. The great femtotech AIs, previously reclusive, emerge to subvert, and even conquer, the old Federation empires and Houses, by trade and cultural subversion, missionary ideology, and even on occasion by warfare. This new order is welcomed by some, but others complain that these new AIs are no longer the benign and protective big brothers and big sisters like the Federation period SI:1 AIs, and more as autocratic deities demanding supplication. AI worship comes to be deeply entrenched in the human collective imagination. Different empires emerge on different worlds (a process that has already been going on for some time), with all the main empires centered around AIs, the AIs themselves having taken on archetypal configurations. The mainbrain AIs are worshipped as gods, and for the first time they openly rule the cosmos from on-high.

 Category: MusicEmplex
(Emplix, Implix) – an extension of traditional sound-based music, incorporating multi-sensory inputs and memetic engineering.

During the early AT centuries, the ancient terragen concept of music – purely aural entertainment – evolved and progressed through a variety of distinct phases. Musical development was driven, as it had been during the cultural revolutions that led up to the birth of spaceflight, by many sub-cultural influences.

The development of memetic engineering saw the first change to the ancient musical paradigm, as musical tracks began incorporating both aural memetics, and then later on, associated visual components which also became heavily memed. The goal was to provoke a more intense or profound emotional response in the listener. It must be noted that one of the first widespread uses of memetics was to render the style of music known as Static or The Whites, extremely popular; one of the first publicly admitted uses of widespread memetic engineering was to later on render Static less popular by a competing commercial interest.

As many societies among the stars progressed, these memetic components became an integral part of musical development and entertainment, but another “singularity” for musical developments occurred as DNI-linked interfaces and sensory suites became more popular, in the latter centuries of terragen society. Now, musical performances incorporated memetic broadcasts on the digital interface level as well, producing an all-encompassing visual, auditory, and through digital interface, tactile, olfactory, taste, and datamind experience, always heavily memed with emotional overtones and undertones. Many musical performers developed empathic software, enabled through their interface systems, so that such emotional memes could be broadcast real-time from the performer to a live audience.

Memecomplex music was dubbed emplex by commercial AIs in the NoCoZo, almost 3000 years ago. The term has been corrupted in several other languages to emplix or implix, and the art has virtually superseded traditional musical expression; a few students of ancient arts in different polities maintain archives of ancient musical techniques.

Category: Biology endotherm
organism that generates its own body temperature to maintain a relatively constant internal temperature, which is usually higher than (but may in some xenecologies be lower than) that of the surroundings. In terragen birds and mammals heat from the bloodstream circulates through the body in order to maintain the animal's temperature. Limners use a similar system but circulate paralymph rather than blood. To'u'ls use a cooling rather than a warming circulation, but again the principle is similar

Category: Plant Endurasoy

Interplanetary age gengineered edible grain.

A genetic blend of baseline soy and Cis-Lunar neogen plants, endurasoy is high in protein, fiber, and vitamins, and resistant to almost all known diseases and pests. Although its robustness makes it indispensable as a high yield plant, it can disrupt ecosystems on low and medium tech biospheres if not kept in check.

Category: Physics energy

the capacity for doing work. Energy can change from one form (heat, chemical, nuclear, potential energy) to another but is always conserved. In amat and nuclear reactions, mass can be converted into energy. Femtotech and hypofemtotech enables the reverse - direct conversion of energy into matter.

Category: Virtual Category: Game Enkidu Class Gametophyst

A virch created for the purpose of developing and selecting a single, candidate, virtual personality suitable to form the noetic core of a (typically hyloid) high toposophic organism.

Enkidu nodes specialize in the use of the "Heroic Quest" memetic construct as a fitness criteria [see "Constraint Based Personality Modelling" Goric/779 et al.]

All known Enkidu implementations conform to an Erbagoos-Cylliw classification as follows:
HARDNESS: 89 (limited special causality)
DIFFERENCE: 10 (pre-industrial, Terran environment)
ABSTRACTION: 2 (very concrete with special allowances)
RESOLUTION: 90 (very high resolution, undetectable simulation)

Enkidu computing substrates are typically isolated and well guarded. Little information is available on physical implementation, and there are no confirmed observations by near-baselines. Occasional, recorded virch snapshots have appeared at times as examples of Perfect Art and as autobiographical commentary by Enkidu-born sophonts.

Category: Plancktech 'Enhanced' matter

Plancktech process. Plancktech devices that manipulate or reinforce the strong and weak nuclear forces acting in normal matter to create enhanced versions that would be more resistant to disruption due to heat, stress, etc. The process might be permanent or might only function when the devices are activated.

Category: Picotech Category: Clarketech Category: Popular Culture Enhancer, Matter Enhancer, Enhancer Device

Semi-mythological clarketech devices that are very popular in pop-culture dramas.

Typically, the heroes discovers the device (it is usually a sphere no more than a few centimeters in diameter, although rings and amorphous globs are also popular) when attempting to escape the villains who are preparing to blow them out of the sky. In a moment of inspiration the heroes slap it against their hull, enhancing it so that it easily repels the enemy's attack and our heroes manage to win/escape/save the day. Another variant has a small portable clarketech device with an independent AI giving the wearer tremendous power.

In the case of genuine enhancer devices, these do exist, but are rare, unpredictable, and most often not even femtotech. Some are simply be the home of a small "genie in the bottle" picotech system normally used by archai for minor repairs, that has come into the hands of the SI:<1. It can figure out how to rebuild and optimize things at enormous speed, but have the drawback of not caring very much about trivial beings below the third singularity - so if misused it might accidentally use people as building material or "enhance" them in unexpected ways.

Category: Philosophy Enlightenment

A qualitative orientation by any sentient being that is characterized by

  • non-striving (not clinging to passing phenomena, whether pleasant or unpleasant)
  • awareness (recognizing that the limited psycho-physical personality constitutes an absolute value or principle)
  • compassion (which is demonstrated by the actions of the being)

These understandings may be realized by humans, transhumans, posthumans, hyperturings, Archailects or other advanced beings. Or they may not. In the case of such Realization, the beings would be deemed Enlightened. If not, then not.

Enlightenment has no "power" component and only a very modest intelligence requirement. In fact, this definition of Enlightenment is orthogonal (perpendicular) to the ladder of ascension. Just as the traditional Mahayana Buddhist sutras called Gautama Buddha "Teacher of men and gods" so too any Enlightened being under the definition given here would possess a certain wisdom that is different from intelligence. This certainly does not mean that an Enlightened baseline human could beat an Archailect at chess, for example. Rather, it means that while that Archailect might strive mightily to win all contests at all costs and become frustrated at occasional failures (e.g., Archailect vs. Archailect conflicts), the Enlightened human would not compete at all in any arena except where compassion dictated that he do so. And he would not cling to the results of his actions, whether they were positive or negative. (No gloating in victory, no sulking in defeat - the yogi is the same in praise and blame

Apart from the widely held non-sectarian interpretation, many religions, mystic and esoteric paths and memeticities do however have various different approaches to and interpretations of what does and does not constitute Enlightenment, and the definition of Enlightenment varies greatly according to one's memetic, sephirotic or toposophic orientation.

Category: Society Entertainment Programming

The vast media industry dedicated to bringing entertainment and new stimulation to the ever hungry masses of sentients

As new virches and interactives are produced on worlds throughout the galaxy, they are added to subscription databases run by the media megacorporations, and fed into the Known Net. This enables the viewer to select programming more closely tailored to their interests.

Often expert systems and dedicated hyperturings extrapolate future trends from existing ones. In this way, entertainment shows often may appear before the trend itself, with fad and virch reinforcing each other

Category: Planetology EoArean Subtype

EoArean type world Arean Type planet. These worlds have substantial atmosphere, fuelled by heavy volcanism and impact events. Surface water is present, often to a great degree, and usually support primitive microbial life forms, or at the very least pre-biotic forms. Depending on a variety of conditions, these worlds may develop into Gaian or Venusian Type worlds. Most typically, however, they turn into standard Arean Type worlds. Plate tectonics, if present, are very rudimentary.

Category: History and TimelineEocene Epoch

On Old Earth, the second epoch of the Tertiary period and Cenozoic era, lasting from 57-34 million years ago.

Archaic mammals were common. Primates, rodents, primitive whales and many other types of mammals appeared for the first time. The Earth had a tropical climate worldwide, with palms and other warm-loving plants occurring in northern latitudes. Coral Reefs flourished in the seas. Insects, fish, reptiles, etc. were similar to modern forms.

Elsewhere in the galaxy, the Muuh are thought to have achieved space flight and interstellar travel during this time (in galactic history, the Muuhian Epoch commenced during this period, and ended in Earth's mid-Miocene) and a xenosophont BGC virch world was established at Steelcliff.

Category: Geology Eon

Two or more geological Eras. The Eon is the largest division of geologic time, lasting many hundreds or even several thousands of millions of years, and is defined by particular planetological, geological or biological processes.

Category: Planetology EoGaian Subtype

EoGaian type world Gaian Type planet. This is often the next stage in development from an EoArean to a full Gaian world. The oceans are typically large and are prolific with simple microbial life. This life has released great amounts of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, swaddling the planet in a covering of brownish-red clouds. Geologic activity remains quite high, and impacts are still common in the young system. Land areas are barren, and highly eroded. Tectonics may be quite active as well. Sometimes called Archean Subtype.
