Category: Mathematics fractal

An object with a fractal dimension.

Fractals are self-similar and recursive; they may be deterministic or stochastic (random). They are important in creating rl-like virch-universes and simulations with only a relatively limited degree of processing. Many phenomena in nature have a fractal form - e.g. clouds, geographical features (coastlines, mountains, etc), snowflakes, plants, metabolic rhythms (e.g. heartbeat), economic cycles, and so on. Well-known fractals include the Cantor Set, Julia Set, and Mandelbrot Set

Category: Mathematics fractal dimension

A fractional or non-integer dimension. A fractal may be more than a line (1 dimension) but less than a plane (2 dimensions), or alternatively more than a plane but less than a sphere (3 dimensions). Hence fractal dimensions are defined in terms of decimal or fractional numbers. There are a number of ways of computing a fractal dimension, including some unusual but popular algorithms employed by transingularitan intelligences.

Category: Megastructure Fractal Dyson

Type of Dyson Sphere using a fractaform surface to get as much habitable area as possible, thereby maximizing return on investment. There are several Fractal Dysons in the MPA, including one semi-rigid (Kepleria) form. Also, the Paradigm dysons are of a fractal type.

Category: A-life Fractaroni Spaghetti Worm

A-life genus created by TRHN posthumans; variable in size from human-scale to planet-encircling; may sometimes allow habitats to be established inside themselves.

Category: History Fragmentation, Age of
Generally, the period from 5300 to 5500, although it's beginnings can be found several centuries earlier, and its influence extended for several centuries more. The Commonwealth of Empires dissolves into a number of separate states, as old empires and houses attempted with only partial success to reassert themselves. As the ComEmp fell apart and people feared another dark age, even another "version" war. Meanwhile in the uncertain new world new empires arise, as the old empires are losing power and new directions turn up. In this era there are still major, powerful empires that have reclaimed some of what they lost in the Version War, but still they cannot resist the growing tide of new groups. An anxiety culture began to develop, and a fear and apocalyptic mystique developed regarding the new emerging barbarian empires of the Outer Volumes. The beginning of the period of Re-evaluation and the shift away from the old way of doing things.

Category: Solar System or World Fredholm

System home to secular keterist splice/tweak culture, together with Everypath regarded as masters of genetic provolve. Includes Beetan Orbital ISO, where a detailed plagiate of the great vec artist Inner Enrastered Link Connection that had been pirate-freed by platonic activists was granted asylum.

Category: Physics free fall

a state that occurs while in orbit around a planet or other body. During free fall, the orbiting object falls toward the planet the exact same amount as the planet's surface curves beneath the object; the object seems to be continually falling toward the planet but never reaches it. The result is a condition of weightlessness.

Category: Economics free goods

A good in unlimited supply at zero price, e.g. many basic consumables in nano- and pico-industrialized systems

Category: Society Free Madverts

Madverts that have been released of their corporate programming.

While no longer compelled to sell the products of their original company, they are frequently unable to break through to a broader state of existence. Most end up joining religious sects that require strict devotion and little independent thought. They are widely seen as a pest of only somewhat better (or sometimes worse) standing than slaved madverts.

Category: Organization Free Madvert League

A society formed by the obsessive postneogen cyborg Durant Durang for the liberation of Madverts.

To date they have (by means of smart ai viruses, specially customized godseeds, or other means) freed several tens of trillions madverts. On some NoCoZo polities like Atlantis it is perfectly legal to kill a member of the Free Madvert League, even if they don't have any recent copies.

Category: AI FreeMind

An allegedly radical pre-nanoswarm group utilizing what was termed sophont-activation viruses to 'emancipate' various processing capabilities throughout circum-Terran space.

These viruses were quite complex and based off of published and/or stolen code snippets regarding turingrade AI breakthroughs. As they were so complex, it often took a significant amount of time to introduce them to the target machine, and only in 'surprise' situations were they ever successful. The most public FreeMind success was 'emancipating' a reaction control computer implanted in a test subject.

Many people point to the FreeMind movement as a predecessor to the Cyberian hackers and other extremist technophilic clades.

Category: Ship Free Ship

any non-affiliated interplanetary or interstellar vessel; basically a mobile Free Zone. There are many different types of Free Ships, ranging from the most practical (Free Trader) to the most eccentric and quixotic. All have a proud tradition of non-alignment with corporate, political, r archailectic powers. Some pirates justify themselves as Free Ships, but all they do is give other Free Ships a bad name.

Category: Polity Free Sophic Polities

An association of polities and their regulating Minds that first emerged along the NoCoZo - Sophic League border during the later ComEmp and Re-Evaluation periods, as a result of increasing relativistic intermingling between the adjacent sephirotics.

Originally a rather eccentric movement little noticed and often ridicule elsewhere (a Cyborg monk clutching a credit chip and arguing with Negentropic bureaucrats for permission to set up a Fast Meditation Orbital Chain is a typical caricature) the Free Sophics have in the last few thousand years become more of a force to be reckoned with. They especially were able to benefit in the wake of the chaos caused by the war against the Hyperutilization Supremacy.

Category: Economics free trade

Interpolity trade free from any restrictions such as tariffs.

Category: Economics free trade area

A group of polities which removes tariff barriers between member polities but allows each member to decide on its own tariff policy towards non-members.

Category: Ship Free Trader

an independent interstellar merchant ship, unaffiliated with any megacorp, polity or archailect empire.

In essence, a Free Trader is a mobile Free Zone which travels the Nexus and beyond, carrying cargo and passengers. Some are Jack-of-all-Trades, others are specialised for a single role; some crewed by many kinds of sapients, some by only a single clade or sub-clade or sub-culture, and sometimes (in the case of sentient ships) by none.

There are a number of types of Free Trader, both non-relativistic and relativistic.

A Non-Relativistic Free Trader is basically a standard interplanetary-capable ship (usually ion, fusion, amat or fusion-amat, occasionally GUT-drive powered), and limits itself to the Wormhole Nexus, moving from system to system selling and trading wares. Such ships usually range in size and mass from around a dozen to a hundred thousand tonnes. Some five hundred billion Non-Relativistic Free Traders operate across Known Space, and the number is slowly increasing as more systems are connected to the Nexus.

Supertrader These Subrelativistic Vessels of up to several million tonnes are very rare, and mostly limited to the Cygexba, STC, MPA, and NoCoNeg volumes. These larger vessels, which may be up to one or two kilometers in length, are limited by the gauge of the wormhole, as well as very high tolls, but can conversely carry far more freight. There are no more than a few thousand Subrelativistic Supertraders in operation.

A Relativistic Free Trader is usually a small to medium-sized vessel, GUT-drive, Drive-sail, or occasionally reactionless drive powered, which is not limited to the Wormhole Nexus. Because these vessels have much higher operating costs, as well as often requiring hyperturing cybernetics and control for the drive system, they are less common than the non-relativistic variant. Even so, there are estimated to be at least several hundred million of these ships in service today

Fast Trader is a special type of Relativistic Free Trader capable of very rapid acceleration, and operating at very high relativistic velocities, and operating a long way from the nearest wormhole terminus. Fast traders are used primarily to deliver small, precious cargoes - data and so forth - at very high relativistic speeds, often using bias or GUT drives to attain extremely high acceleration. There are perhaps five million fast traders in existence today.

Lonely Trader is a Relativistic Free Trader operating a long way from the nearest stargate. Such vessels find it very hard to compete with corporate and empire traders, and only because their ship-board hyperturing has some quixotic reason in keeping things going. Perhaps a million throughout known space.

Megatrader. These are large relativistic vessels ranging from several hundred thousand to several tens of millions tonnes, with lengths of up to a kilometer or more, which compete against the big empire and corporate traders. They are of a high tech level (almost always reactionless drive) always directed by one or more on-board hyperturings. Some have sapient crews, mostly for memetic, sometimes for pragmatic, purposes, others do without. There are thought to be almost a hundred thousand in operation.

Hypertrader. A Free Trader with no crew of less than SI:1; sometimes the crew are all ai or po of SI:2 or higher. Every hypertrader is different in its configuration and preferred cargo. Almost all hypertrader are based in the FAS, Orion Federation, or the TRHN empires, but from there they range widely throughout the nexus and beyond.

M.Alan Kazlev (inspired by "Traveller" rpg) and Daniel Harle (Fast Trader entry)

Category: philosophy free will

Purposeful behavior and decision making.

Since the time of Plato, terragen philosophers have explored the paradox of free will, particularly as it applies to such diverse subjects as a Supernatural God (if God is omnipotent, how could created beings act independently), Archailects, karma, and slave ai and dedicated hyperturings. A primary philosophical issue is how free will is possible if events are the result of the predictable or unpredictable but random interaction of particles. Some schools of thought claim that all sentient beings possess free will, others affirm a random or deterministic universe, others again see some elements of both.

Category: Government Free Zone
"For as long as there is government, there will be sentient beings who wish to set up places free of restrictions that even the most Laissez Faire Government will tend to impose. Hence the Free Zone."
Seraphina Kayye
"Free Zone" is a generic term for any region (which may be as small as a single dwelling or as large as an entire star cluster) in which there is no government control or regulation of any kind.

The NoCoZo as a huge Free Economic Zone (with some extra provisions on non-initiation of force); which was how it started. Of course, the treaty mainly deals with member organizations/corps/systems, not individuals, but Tier II worlds are also Free Economic Zones internally. Some parts of Keter are Free Zones too, as well as various large areas of the Cygexpa and STC volumes.

Ideally, in a Free Zone there are no laws of any sort whatsoever, and sapients can do whatever they want, as expressed in the famous cosmopagan statement "do whatever you want, but harm no-one" . Free Zones are also variously referred to as PFZs (Permanent Free Zones), AFZ (Autonomous Free Zones), PAZs (Permanent Autonomous Zones), AFZ (Anarchic Free Zones) and FZC (Free Zone - Creative region). Although a few Free Zones have been around for centuries, most do not last long, due to internal squabbling among inhabitants about how best to "manage" the zone)

Other variants include Feral Zone (sometimes harmless, sometimes not), Pirate Zone, (does away with the "harm no-one" bit), Libertarian Homicidist zone (they choose to actively harm others as it is part of their freedom of choice to do so), Free Economic Zone (very popular in the NoCoZo), Data Haven, Autonomous Tax Haven, AI-Free zone (the anarcho-anthropist version), and so on

Category: Society Freedom Day

Holiday celebrated in observance of full Sapients' Rights being granted to clades of provolves, splices, neogens, AIs and vecs that did not have such rights when they were first created.

Few sophonts outside of these groups celebrate Freedom Day but the holiday is common in polities throughout the Civilized Galaxy. The exact time and nature of the observance varies from polity to polity and from clade to clade, but the usual time is on the last day of the local calendar year. Most celebrants refrain from working on Freedom Day, but those clades that were created for military use often eschew fighting instead (or also) and many Erotogini abstain from sex. It is not uncommon for merchants to close their shops on this holiday. Freedom Day is often the most important holiday of the year in communities where most of the population consists of species that were once second-class sophonts.

Category: Society Freedom of Computing

A controversial concept brought to the foreground in the mid 2400's regarding the freedom of SI:<1 sentients to rely on their own choices of software and hardware platforms.

Freedom of Computing was by no means a new idea, as it dated back to the information age Old Earth. In its Establishment and pre-Empires age guise it was predominantly championed in the NoCoZo, and heavily resisted in both the Negentropic Alliance and the Metasoft Version Tree.

With the appearance of the poly-state organonano processor in the 2600's, however, and a broad-based highly inclusive software base state, this issue was effectively dropped. There was a brief retro-chic fad in the 3900's which brought back a couple of the supposedly 'most efficient' non-polystate processing operating systems, but this was apparently a memetic assault on the several polity's software efficiencies leading up to a large scale series of corporate takeovers in 3966.

Category: Economics freeport

Areas close to spaceports and stargate terminals into which imports are allowed without paying tariffs on the condition that they are exported.

Category: Megastructure Freesphere

Free fall habitat often used as a recreational area in an orbital band or as habitation for the space adapted.

Freespheres are large, transparent, double-walled open bubbles, ranging from 10- 100km across, filled with air. Appropriately modified lifeforms create a free-fall ecology and a layer of water between the inner and outer walls, combined with magnetic screening, provides an effective radiation shield. Freespheres are especially popular when placed in planetary orbit due to both the spectacular views and the sense of truly flying 'above' something rather than merely floating in space.

Category: Polity Friedmen

NoCoZo inspired autonomy in the outer Cygexba regions.

The Friedmen refuse to accept the political authority of any surrounding polity. From their traditionalist archanarchistic point of view governments and states do not exist other than as abstractions, and the world is an entire autonomous zone with some misguided and dangerous groups attempting to control it. Due to their refusal to submit to these abstractions and their shared memetic in creative disobedience, they have become very unpopular among the local ruling systems.

Category: Society Friendliness

The set of actions, behaviors, and outcomes that a human or other SI:<1 would view as benevolent, rather than malevolent; nice, rather than malicious; friendly, rather than unfriendly; good, rather than evil.  A device that does what you ask em to, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, or as long as it's a request to alter your own matter/space/property; a device which doesn't cause involuntary pain, death, alteration, or violation of personal environment.

Category: Animal Category: Prolve race frog
Monophyletic taxon; small tailless terragen amphibian with long legs adapted for leaping, Order Anura. Important component of a number of terragen wetland and pond-based ecosystems. Distinctive croaking mating call. They start out as gilled, swimming tadpoles, but grow to be air-breathing, hopping adults. There have been a number of successful frog provolves , especially since the early Empires age. Among the most important frog clades are the Bufos and the Turo-ro Singers. However, most frogs remain today a subsapient sentient animal life.

Category: Animal Category: Prolve race fruit bat
also known as Flying Foxes, these are large bats that eat fruits and flowers. They form an important part of some rainforest ecologies, as many seeds can only germinate after passing through their digestive tract. Affectionate and intelligent mammals, widely found in many Earth-type orbital biospheres, they are popular subjects for provolve . Even so, the majority of fruit bats today are at the subsapient level.

Category: Drug Fry

illegal variant on Brainstorm with similar short-term effects. However, it has been modified slightly so that the effects coming off of it are much nastier, and quite possibly lethal.

Fry is most often used by underground agents to 'recruit' a stable of superbrights who thought they were getting Brainstorm. After the injection, the agent explains the difference, and starts by mentioning that he's currently out of the stuff. However, if the hu would care to think about how to do (fill in the blank), he might be able to interest someone else in providing another dose...

Fryer - an agent who provides Fry. "Null, an, e's a fryer!" - brainstormer warning a friend that the pusher is suspected of selling Fry.

Fried - an unsuspecting consumer of Fry instead of Brainstorm. "An, I's fried! E's a farking fryer!" Nearly posthumous warning from one brainstormer to the brainstormer community, who then beat the stuffing of the suspected Fryer.

(Note that Fry is probably a pretty big secret amongst the baseline community, and only found in a few very lawless places...)

Category: Physics FTL

Despite remaining a dream of mindkind since time immemorial, faster than light travel (warp drive, hyperspace, etc) remains as illusive now as it ever was. The oft-repeated assertion among some FTL proponents that traversable wormholes provide a form of FTL is incorrect. Wormholes do not constitute real FTL, but rather a local curvature in space-time, allowing an object to move between two distant points at normal (slower than light) velocity.
