Fundying, Fundying-Up, Pulling a Fundy

Popular colloquialism meaning to act consciously, with deliberation and premeditation, but in such a way that consistently undermines, contradicts, discredits, thwarts, or foils one's own stated or supposed objectives, goals, values, or purpose.

Term apparently originated during the early or mid Information Age in response to the observation that fundamentalists, in speaking-out against a popular song or other recording or the artist responsible for such, inadvertently provided free advertising for the object or eir wrath and thereby increased popular awareness - and usually sales - of the very thing ey were condemning. It is not uncommon in the modern era for clades and polities of an atheistic, agnostic, secular, deist, or simply pragmatic bent, to allow or even give encouragement to fundamentalists in eir midst, for purposes of providing eir populace, especially the clade's or polity's young, with a sort of koan or illustrative example to show why eir clade or polity holds the views it does: "This is why we reject such nonsense."

method of using sapient cognitive resources by means of subtle memetic persuasion

Funware is a particularly insidious memetrap set up by certain unscrupulous (and typically transapient) sophonts to tap into the well of baseline processing capability. These software applications are typically high-energy, very entertaining toys which just happen to model certain difficult problems. Rather than spending their own cognitive effort, some SI:>1 sophonts have hit on the solution of allowing the SI:<1 shotgun approach to discover and/or polish a particular problem's solution.

The most infamous of these was the release of 'Prime Vector', a 4-D maze game in which the players attempt to find the longest unique path through a maze which alters in space and time due in part to their actions. Careful analysis of remnants of the software indicate that it may have been used to brute-force a one-time-pad encryption of a specific message. This particular software became infamous due to its highly addictive appeal, the carefully (barely!) legal subliminal rewards offered and punishments administered to players in the course of the game. One official after-action estimate (from Bonobo) stated that 75% of the software's baseline users were psychologically addicted within 2 hours of gameplay.

The fusion drive uses heat from a fusion reactor to heat and eject the fuel. Depending on the type and efficiency, that gives a specific impulse of anywhere from a few thousand to a million.

Fusion rockets are huge and heavy devices, but, in systems where amat is scarce or unavailable, especially out on the periphery and among some luddite groups, they are give good performance for System-wide operations.

Fusion Pulse (Daedelus) drive

Nuclear fusion rocket powered by continuous explosions of small amounts of nuclear fusion material, and propelled by deflecting the explosive forces with reflectors.

Originally solid plates were used, these were replaced later by magnetic fields, the type of system still in use today. While early models were very inefficient (and some of these can still be found among certain isolated ludd clades), designs employing extensive nanotech and superturing controllers have isps in the order of a million, and these are widely used

fusion reactor

Power generation through the release of heat through a controlled nuclear fusion reaction.

The hot plasma is confined in a magnetic bottle. Dedicated expert systems and subturing computers are required to ensure that the magnetic bottle remains at exactly the right charge to safely hold the plasma. Fusion generation is a widely relied upon power source throughout much of the galaxy, both to power large vehicles and settlements. Although not as efficient as amat, it is considerably safer, since there is no need to store amat and a magnetic failure means the hot plasma disperses causing only minor local damage.

Futsies

A common phenomenon on worlds experiencing and sudden and exponential technological increase, culture shock, or future shock, fusties people who can't deal with the future. Futsies aren't technophiles per se, they're people who encountered a technology and became so obsessed with it their whole lives became focused around that tech. Some react to the strange world of introduced technology in even stranger ways. Or they become aggravated or anxious because they cant make it work or don't understand it, or they ensure that their descendants or offspring.
