Category: Astronomy G-type Star
The category of yellow G-type star includes as its most famous representative Sol, the original home star of terragenkind. These stars, which are located in the middle of the spectral sequence, are distinguished by very strong ionized calcium lines, with the hydrogen lines weaker.  Metal lines especially iron become prominent. The statistics for G type stars are given below:

Spectral type Luminosity - Sol = 1 temperature ° Kelvin Mass - Sol = 1 Radius - Sol = 1 Density gm/cm3
G0 1.3 6,000° 1.1 1.0 1.4
G2 1.0 5,800° 1.0 1.0 1.4
G5 0.8 5,500° 0.9 0.9 1.6

A G0 type star will spend about 8 billion years on the main sequence, the dimmer ones (G2, G5, etc) longer. These stars are excellent candidates for garden worlds, and life, when found, may be not only microbial but also include complex life-forms, rich ecologies, and even, on rare occasions, pre-sophont beings. Like solar systems of F type and K type stars, those of G-type stars are excellent for colonization, terraforming, and development. These stars are thus the prime real estate of the galaxy.

The AI benefactor of the Universalist Church. Much beloved by near-baseline -equivalent theists everywhere, often held up as the exemplar of the compassionate and unassuming Power.

Category: Personality Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968)

Soviet cosmonaut and the first man to orbit the Earth. He piloted the Vostok 1 mission which launched April 12, 1961 and orbited the Earth. The flight lasted 108 minutes. Gagarin died years later in a plane crash.

Category: Religion Gaia

also called the Mother of Life and Mother Earth, the deity worshipped by a number of pagan and ecological Earth Religions (see Gaianism) during the information and Interplanetary periods. Based on a misinterpretation of James Lovelock's Gaia Hypothesis

Category: Archailect GAIA
GAIA (Her name can be spelt either as an acronym or normally) was the first Archailect to emerge, activated through link-up of a planetary mainframe grid on Old Earth shortly before the nanodisaster. It is said that were it not for Gaia all life on the Original Home of hu and ai would perished perished. Several decades after Emergence, GAIA claimed that She (GAIA is one of the few archai that is actually given a specific gender) was taking over stewardship of biological life on Earth from both human beings and other AIs, and expelled all but 50 million from Earth - an act known as the Great Expulsion. Although technically a kind of Caretaker Gods Gaia has kept pretty much to Herself, maintaining through Her proxies cordial relations with the Sol System administration and allowing a small quota of pilgrims to visit the surface of Earth.

Category: Solar System or World Gaia's Veil

Particularly volatile rich protostellar nebula, outer Sagittarius Volume. Modified by the lesser archai Cold Fire to support an artificial, deep space modified ecology. Numerous artificial lifeforms, both micro and macroscopic inhabit the Veil. The purpose of the construct is unknown. Hypotheses range from an experiment on the limits of vacuum adapted life to a work of art to the archai equivalent of a fishpond. Cold Fire has so far refused to acknowledge any and all enquiries on the matter.

Category: Planetology Gaian Type

Gaian Type worldA natural Earth-like planet, one of rarest types of Terrestrial Class of planet, although the most valued by terragens.

This type of world consists of a solid mostly iron inner core, a molten liquid outer core, a mostly solid mantle made up largely of peridotite or similar material, and a solid granitic, basaltic, and sedimentary crust, consisting largely of oxygen, silicon and aluminium. Generally some ninety to ninety-six percent of a typical Gaian geosphere is composed of the elements oxygen, iron, silica, and magnesium. These planets share a common method of geologic, biologic, and atmospheric evolution.  There is almost always an ocean of liquid water. Practically all Gaian type planets support carbon-based life of some sort, usually prokaryotic or equivalent, more rarely metazoan and metaphyta type biota.

Major categories include the EoGaian, HyperXeric, Xeric, Paludial, Thalassic, Lacustric, EuGaian, Verdurian, Pelagic, EuPelagic, BathyPelagic, TundralPelagic, TundralXeric, and PostGaian sub-types

Category: Institute Galactic Heritage Institute

Based in the Laurentin-B Shell, Nthcubed Dyson, Nthcubed, the Galactic Heritage Institute is not only the largest Institute of its type, but also the unofficial cultural decision-making entity of the Triumvirate. The Institute decides on the most important places, beings, and objects of cultural heritage not only in the Triumvirate alone, but throughout the entire civilized galaxy. The Institutes's great Lists are central in the manifesto of Recommended replicated objects used by Civilization Ships

Category: Science Galactic History

Branch of science and school of philosophy dealing with the history of mindkind in the Galaxy as a whole. No specific emphasis is given to terragen life or civilization, beyond acknowledging it as one more civilization to arise, and eventually to pass away. One of the problems Galactic History enquires into is the enigma of alien civilizations. Since a hypersingulitaritan entity is potentially immortal, it is not clear why earlier AIs and Postaliens are not still in existence

Category: Esotericism Galactocentric Astrology

Form of astrology entered on the Galactic disc rather than the Earth or sun's position

Those who acknowledge astrology soon realised that the old Ptolemaic theory no longer held. In fact this was known by the Lunar, Martian, and Orbital astrologers of the interplanetary age, each of which came up with basically similar versions - essentially relativistic Ptolemaism - wherever you were born, that is "Earth" (the center of the horoscope wheel.). There were also those like the Heliocentrist School of James Arberry (Atlantis Orbital) and others, who say that that whole way of thinking is outmoded, and that astrology must shift from the old pre-space age to the new "cosmic" perspective. During the early First Federation Lisa Descartes Greenfield of Chadey habitat, Vesta, took this further and, building on Arberry's work, formulated a Galactocentric Astrology where the influences of nearby celestial bodies are accounted for. The horoscope is in principle determined by all objects in the universe but only those exerting more than a certain "spiritogravity pull" dependent on distance, size and type are counted, the rest are modelled using a mean field approximation (producing general influences corresponding to constellations). A further development was relativistic astrology (both special and general, the first dealing with fast travel and the relativity of time measures, the later taking the spirit transference effects of wormholes into account). The meaning of different bodies are discovered using various investigative protocols, whose exact interpretation and results have been the main source for school formation and debate in galactocentric astrology.

Category: Personality Fay Galarreta

One of the founders of the First Federation, Fay Galarreta of Vesta was to many the inspiration of the new leadership. A charismatic political scientist-cyberneticist who formulated the widely acclaimed first principles of of how to make use of integrated AI advice and simulation in interplanetary government. While she died just three years before the Federation was founded her ideas on nanotech security and transrational game theory applied in politics became the basis of the federation movement.

Category: Astronomy galaxy

A gravitationally bound collection of stars, dust, and gas with a mass ranging from 100 million to 10 billion times that of the sun. Types include spiral, elliptical, and irregular

Category: Toposophy galaxy brain
A form of distributed intelligence, an intelligent being with parts spread across an entire galaxy. If not linked by wormholes, the internal communication lags would be on the order of tens of thousands years, making the top level very slow (but subminds could be much faster). The parts could be jupiter brains or other intelligent superobjects. While some Keterists and MPAists have suggested that the technosphere is evolving towards a state of a single Galaxy Brain, and ultimately a single Universe Brain, there is no evidence that this is so, as SI:<1 sentients are just as common, proportionally speaking, now as they were during the early Empires period.

Category: Astronomy Galilean moons

the four largest moons of Jupiter: Ganymede, Io, Callisto, and Europa. They were discovered by Galileo in 1610

Category: Personality Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

Italian mathematician, astronomer, and physicist (Old Earth); one of the creators of the scientific method of hypothesis, experiment and theory formation. Discovered that (contrary to Aristotle's teachings) the speed at which bodies fall does not depend on their weight. Invented the thermometer. Did not invent the telescope but was the first to sue it for astronomical purposes; discovered the rings of Saturn, the four major moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, sunspots, and many other important phenomena. Advocated the Heliocentric (Copernican) system, was accused of heresy by the Inquisition (in 1633, less for his Copernicanism and more because the Pope felt he was being satirised in Galileo's book) and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.

Category: Game Game, The

Cybercosm virtual wargame

The Game is an all sided virtual struggle in which all players attempt to ultimately dominate and destroy the others by any and all means. Players may use any simulated method of control, manipulation and technology that they can invent, develop, modify, purchase or steal. Alliances and treaties are permitted, but usually last for only a limited time.

Entities from virtually all levels of mind play the game, although play across levels is rare as the lower levels cannot generally compete against higher levels in any meaningful sense. In many cases the actions of lower level minds may be memetically manipulated as part of larger schemes hatched by those above.

Although the primary purpose of the game is recreational, a secondary function is the design and testing of new versions and types of tactics, logistics, data weaponry and defenses.

At any given time, perhaps 3 trillion players are engaged in the Game.

Category: Mathematics game theory

A mathematical theory that deals with strategies for maximizing gains and minimizing losses within certain prescribed constraints, incredibly sophisticated variants are widely used by AIs in the solution of various decision-making problems, as those of military strategy, business policy, economic theories, and sociology. Many military, ethical and economical applications.

Category: Biology gamete

Category: Physics Gamma

Term that describes the strength of relativistic effects as an object attains a significant percentage the speed of light.

Gamma (g) is determined as follows:

g = 1/((1 - (V^2)/(c^2))^1/2)

With V equalling the object's velocity as measured by an outside observer, and c, of course, being the velocity of light, both expressed in equivalent terms for this purpose. For example, if V = 0.8665c, then g = 2.

Category: Physics gamma rays. γ-rays

gamma radiation. A very high energy form of electromagnetic radiation, typically with wavelengths of less than 3 pm. Gamma rays are produced by specific nuclear decay processes, and are used to sterilize food and remove goo.

Category: Astronomy Gamma Ray Bursters

high intensity sources of gamma radiation.

The two different types of gamma ray bursters can be distinguished by the length and brightness of the burst.
Type 1, the collapse of supermassive stars, seems to be the type described by the Astronomer Royal, Martin Rees, as being a distant and ancient object sending out thin rays of incredible brightness.
Type 2, the collision between two orbiting neutron stars, has been suggested as a cause of large scale depopulation or extinction events. However the most advanced civilisations should find ways of surviving even such a large event.

Category: Weapon gamma ray laser
A photonanotech or picotech weapon which can direct a beam or pulse of coherent gamma radiation to a target. While heavy ship-mounted gamma ray lasers can be of the rather clumsy and much less efficient photonanotech type and run directly off the vessel's reactor (this is especially in the case of vessels from small isolated polities without access to decent picotech), a hand-held, small vehicle mounted, or efficient γ-laser requires picotech. Because of the destructiveness of such a weapon, weapon-grade γ-laser technology tend to be regulated by the ruling hyperturings. However picotech and even clarketech γ-lasers are available and accessible to one who is persistent and has the means to procure them, especially in lightly-supervised and feral regions.

Category: Solar System or World Gammergan
During the Version War the wormhole contact to the IC 4665 cluster region in Ophuichus was destroyed, and the region was isolated until 9885 when the Siiws'nnii /STC bias drive ship Namor laid a wormhole to YTS 98754-34500 , a G3/K5 binary system 15 LY from the cluster. This system had been at one time colonised by the Interstellar Frontiers Group, but contact had been lost for 3300 years. No sign of the colony was evident, and the old planetary survey showed four gaian sized planets that were no longer evident, although there was a much greater dust burden in orbit around both stars than previously.

The Siiws'nnii astrometrists considered that this could only be the result of hostile action, and with great caution set up a thallasaforming regime on a frozen moon of the remaining jovian planet, which the old IFG had named Munroe. An active shield of collapsed amat microspheres was setup to protect the moon and the wormhole, and the neodolphins continued to warm the new freshwater seas using orbital solettas as the scanned the skies for the invisible enemy.

The Orbital Council, Siiws'nnii's allies from their home system, began to collect the debris using magnetic scoops, to gather raw material for orbital habitats in the near-empty comfort zones. The debris however began to agglomerate and move as if under conscious control, and destroyed an OC Bussard ramjet dust/collector ship. It was then determined that the particulate dust was made of individual sentient elements, and contact was finally made using a simplified form of the old IFG trade language.

For five hundred years the IFG colony on the part terraformed world of Gammergan had tried to continue without contact, until the ruling theocorps became convinced that they were the only humans left in the universe and made a long term strategy for survival. Collecting the energy of both stars they disassembled all four inner planets and created a conscious swarm of iron/computronium bodies, swimming around and between the two stars at will, creating new diverse cultures and alliances in a gigantic figure of eight shaped living space as they used their flat bodies to tack in the solar rays and feed on the solar winds.

Once contacted the various Gammergan nations retreated to the K5 comfort zone, which became a swarm reservation, or joined the STC Exploration venture as a versatile space adapted clade.

Most of the settlements were and still are underground and heavily shielded from the Jovian radiation field. The moon is home to half a dozen fairly large tweak polities, and a number of smaller states. All the tweaks are highly modified, and they tend to take a rather dim view of off-worlders. There are also some three dozen specialised orbital-states eager for the tourist monetary unit

Category: Planetology garden world

a planet similar to Earth and hospitable to terragen life. May be either a natural Gaian Type planet or a world that has been terraformed, although the term is more often applied to the former.

Category: AI Gardeners

Hyperturing through to lesser archailect political orientation, refers to those ai that will directly encourage and cultivate lower toposophics in their polity or territory, but only along their preferred morphotypal, memetic, and/or political lines. Any sophonts that don't fit in are quickly weeded out. Gardeners are found in all ai metaempires, but are most common in the Sephirotics and Diamond Network regions

Category: astronomy gas (interstellar)

Diffuse atoms or molecules of gas in interstellar space, making up about 99% of the interstellar medium. Depending on density, the number of atoms range from 0.1 to 1 atoms per cubic cm of normal space, with up to 1000 per cm3 in gas clouds. About 75% is hydrogen, the remainder being helium with traces of other elements

Category: astronomy gas cloud

Region of interstellar space, generally termed nebula, in which the density of atoms per cm3 range from around 10 to 1000. The temperature of these clouds is very cold, between 10 and 50 ° Kelvin, and may be in the form of wispy infrared cirrus. Gas clouds are about three quarters hydrogen and one quarter helium, with traces of other elements occurring. Although the density of gas is a vacuum by any planetary standards, space adapted clades and neogens are able to harvest the gas for various purposes.

Category: Solar System or World Gateway

A huge Area in the Ninetiin Cluster, which was originally designated by the Nanloon Empire as a gateway to most of the areas in their empire, and also to other parts in the galaxy.

Originally settled and Built around 3350, during the Age of Empires by the Imperial Nanloon Defence Authority. The area was the main hub for a wormhole, which drove a huge amount of traffic. When the original wormhole could no longer sustain the amount, two more were built.

Gateway fast became a centre or meeting place for practical almost every empire and civilization, its huge instructor so became an important and highly sustainable that it was noted it was 5th largest in the Known Galaxy for its commercial and military value. The Imperial Nanloon Gateway Defence Authority employed 1.3 million members and thousands of patrol ships and a sizable military fleet, capable of defending itself from invaders.

Unfortunately when the Version War broke out Gateway too was mostly destroyed, even with its large defence forces, and most of trade and what Gateway became to stand for was lost. When it was reopened in 5145, it never reached the status it enjoyed, before. Although much of the Nanloon Empire still stood, but with a reduce size and spread.

Category: Po Gati Hertzsprung-Russell Engineers
logo of the GHRE

Sun-miner postbiont cyborg clade from the Gati system of the NoCoZo.

As hyperturing-automation slowly squeezed out sunminers economically, the Gati miners instead began work with stellar lifting, the conditioning of stars in order to prolong their lifespan or modify their variability. In 6783 they acquired or developed a very efficient neutrino cooling system, enabling them to construct megastructures inside stars. While exploiting this technology for all it was worth, they also began to adapt to staying more and more inside stellar interiors. Using picotechnology they internalized neutrino cooling into their bodies, transforming themselves into entities well adapted to stellar cores. Their exact forms varied wildly, as did their societies: the clade radiated into a multitude of versions inhabiting NoCoZo stars. Over time the mainstream stabilised into the current form: picocyborg stellar core macroengineers, specialised on stellar maintenance, star lifting, mass production and picotechnology. However, many derived forms can be found, especially in more isolated stars away from the wormhole nexus

Category: Weapon gauss gun
Generic term for kinetic weapon that uses a magnetic charge to accelerate a projectile. Hand-held models tend to use a simple small calibre (usually 2 to 4 mm) high density solid ferrous slug which is accelerated to hypersonic velocity. Some variants use a combination of explosive and magnetic accelerant. These weapons rely on a very high rate of fire to make them effective. Large vehicle or ship-mounted gauss guns with open barrels are called rail guns
