Alternately, used by some Hider clades to refer ironically to a higher sophont attempting to memetically induce a reaction amongst said Hider clade(s).

Gunboat/Gunship

Generally, a heavily armed and armoured, short-range military vessel, capable of operating in a hydrospheric, atmospheric, and exoatmospheric (vacuum-capable) environment for prolonged periods of time.

Gunships are used primarily to provide fire-support for ground troops, but can also take on enemy fighters and ships, and may also be used for bombing enemy installations. Although not capable of long-range interplanetary operations, and no match for larger vessels or hyperturing and mainbrain controlled swarms, they can continue local resistance for long periods, hiding in oceans or local gas giants, and coming out only when there is promise of enemy losses.

Subcraft or subships are Gunships specially designed for extended lurking sudden ambush tactics. A Lurkship is a larger and better equipped version.

gunpowder

Explosive powder made from saltpetre, sulfur, and charcoal dust, first invented by the Chinese during the Classical Age Old Earth. It was used originally for making fireworks (used to celebrate important occasions) and later, early rockets for warfare. When knowledge of it reached the Islamic and then the Western civilizations it was utilized in cannons and early muzzle-loading hand-guns (flintlocks, muskets, etc). Gunpowder continued to be used as the standard explosive charge for projectile weapons until well into the industrial age. Even today, many isolated polities, prims, and luddites manufacture and use gunpowder weapons and fireworks

Guo-Shou Jing - (Giclas 258-33 - Belt

Penglai Outpost settlement in Giclas 258-33 Main Belt Habitat, captured by the Conver Ambi, became an important local industrial center, and a minor center for Neotaoist-Converist syncretism. Weathered the First Empires War with little strife. By the time of the Second Empires War and the break-up of the Conver Ambi the system was already mined-out and resource poor, but had established a moderate industry as a spiritual retreat complex. Changed hands half a dozen times during the Version War. Currently Giclas 258-33 is a nominal Dominion system; the locals incorporated some elements of Solarist religion into their syncretistic mix.

GUT drive

The most sophisticated form of reaction drive, more complex but less dangerous than amat. The GUT drive uses picotech to work with the forces of creation physics itself, converting matter into energy without the corresponding need or expense of carrying an equal quality of anti-matter.

The GUT drive is not quite 100% efficient, and a lot of waste heat the ship has to beam away - for this reason many GUT ships have extensive cooling systems. The most advanced use neutrino cooling, radiating the heat as huge amounts of neutrinos. Less advanced ships use huge radiator fins or heat some coolant/fuel that is vented alongside with the GUT exhaust.

There are extensive picotech components inside a GUT drive requiring the drive AI to run it; without the AI instabilities make it shut down (or blow up) nearly instantly. The very high level of hyperturing automation needed to maintain the drive core makes such a vessel expensive and somewhat temperamental relative to amat or fusion drive. However it is not as temperamental as a reactionless drive. While expensive, they are still much cheaper to manufacture than reactionless drive because they do not require exotic matter.

GUT drive ships are popular with both mainstream clades and polities and those which which are wary of too much ai-dependence. There are a large number of old relativistic GUT drive ships still in service, especially in the outer volumes and away from the main nexus. Some of these date back as far as the late first Federation period
