Category: Astronomy K-type Star
The orange K type star is towards the dimmer and cooler end of the sequence of spectral types, although still hot and bright enough for any planets to be good candidates for colonization. These stars are distinguished by a strong metallic line, and molecular bands of CH and CN.

These stars are somewhat like Sol, although rather smaller and dimmer. The statistics for K type stars are given below:

Spectral type Luminosity - Sol = 1 temperature ° Kelvin Mass - Sol = 1 Radius - Sol = 1 Density gm/cm3
K0 0.8 5,500° 0.8 0.8 1.8
K5 0.04 4,900° 0.7 0.7 2.4

While a K0 type star has a mass of about 0.8 times that of Sol, its luminosity is only about 0.4 times as much. . The F5 spectral type is even worse off, its luminosity is only one fifth that of Sol, and a surface temperature of 4,900°. But what they lack in brightness these stars make up in longevity; even the K0 type will spend some 17 billion years on the main sequence. And while these stars have a fairly small life-zone as far as terragen comfort goes, but cold adapted life benefits, and Europan Type worlds and life may be common if conditions are favourable. Arean Type worlds are also very common, and these are always good candidates for terraforming. K-type solar systems are therefore quite popular among development corporations and colonists.

Category: Megacorp K4H

One of the five main interstellar development megacorporations (or Big Five) of the first Federation period. The others were Truth-Santaya Networks, TakiCorb, Terranova Foundation, and SecureSpace. In the colonies they were very often a law unto themselves. They eventually merged to become the NoCoZo

Category: Esotericism Ka

In Classical Egyptian and Neo-Egyptian thought, the subtle principle of double. The definition varies greatly, but generally a contrast is made with the Ba or soul and the Khu or spirit; the Ka being more closely associated with the body.

Category: Esotericism Kabbalah

Old Earth tradition of Jewish theosophy and mysticism that flourished in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and again with the esoteric revival of the information age.

The Kabbalah deals with questions of how the human person can relate to a God who is totally incomprehensible and other, and how that God relates to creation. God is explained in terms of ten archetypal divine emanations or Sefirot, each of which in turn contains a further ten sefirot, and so on, fractally. Also explained is cosmogony; the creation or emanation of angels and humanity, their destiny, the nature of the soul, and the eventual reunion and restoration (tikkun) of all the worlds. Kabbalah was adopted by Christians, Rosicrucians, and Hermeticists, culminating in the Industrial Age Golden Dawn system from which so much of later Hermeticism developed. Certain Kabbalistic elements continue to play an important part in Neohermeticism even today.
[Hebrew - from the verbal root kabal to receive, hand down]

Category: Esotericism kalpa

A generalized Sophic term for a huge period or cycle of time; e.g. the life span of the cosmos.

[Sanskrit - from the verbal root klrip to be in order]

Category: religionKalyptic

Eschatological belief that cosmic, galactic, or just terragen history is moving towards a frightening or disastrous consummation, which will result in the death or destruction of civilization or even current mindkind, usually along with the physical and/or supernaturalist transformation and salvation of a chosen few.

Category: Solar System or World Category: WarfareKang 554-0-22/34 Gm-A

Negentropist outpost (an asteroid base around a small red star); one of the early victims of the "dirty wars" campaign developing as civilised standards fell apart as the Version War dragged on.

In 4587 its cyborg inhabitants were infected by a Cyberian 'mutiny' program causing them to all challenge the chain of command at the same time, convinced those of higher rank were dooming the colony. This was a very early instance of what would become a common tactic of subversion of all forms of life.

Category: EconomicsKap'n Krunche(i) affair

Infamous after-affect of a monomaniacal madvert transcension during the early Separate Empires period.

It is believed that a NoCoZo hypercapitalist or Madvert Supremacist Activist had supercharged a local Kap'n Krunche(i) [TM] madvert with proscribed TRHN "novamind" godseeds, elevating it to S2.8 in 4.5 microseconds. The Kap'n Krunche(i) [TM] power immediately began wreaking havoc on less well defended independent polities by dropping Kap'n Krunche(i) [TM] Hyloengenerators everywhere, such as happened on the unfortunate unaffiliated polity Jhagar's Purchase [YTS 210 345 1009 - i and associated orbital complexes), where the whole area has now become a Corporate Fast Food Park

The Jhagaran survivors (those that had not been appropriated and cyborgised into Kap'n Krunche(i) [TM] Happi Staff ("enjoy your stay, and please come again zar") fled by relativistic ship (the system was not part of the nexus) and appealed to the local third singularity Negentropist Affiliated Virchnation Tark-4 Asro. However the reply, in as much as could be comprehended by the Jhagaran superbrights, seemed to imply that simulations revealed that the suppression of the Krunche(i) modules would be costly in terms of resource expenditure, contributing unnecessarily to the increase of entropy.

This ruling was 150 years later overturned by a an appeal to an S4 avatar of the Judge, who provided a Ruling requesting that the Krunche(i) modules return Jhagar's Purchase to its original owners. The request, not surprisingly, was ignored, and the Changing of the Judges meant that the sympathetic Judge was replaced by another of equal rank who in contrast upheld the original Tark-4 ruling, provided compensation in data, erg expenditure, and backups of original (pre-borgised) inhabitants was provided to the Dagorans. This the Krunche(i) modules found incomprehensible, since no compensation should be required for anyone who was free to live in their perfect corporate paradise. The majority of Jhagarans eventually resettled in the Solar Dominion, although a few continued fighting a terrorist action, inflicting minor casualties using picotech small-arms and an ex-Dominion hyperturing corvette, the Little Jamash, brought out of retirement, and several locally nanoassembled gunboats. Eventually their ships and weapons were infected and turned into mobile Kap'n Krunche(i) outlets. The Little Jamash escaped and eventually founded a rival food chain, Jamash's Tastee Treats. It became a matter of ideological pride that the Jhagarans and those few Solarians who had followed the saga over the past five hundred years would eat nanoreplicas of Jamash's Tastee Treats, and never Kap'n Krunche(i), not even the original Kap'n Krunche(i) which had always (publicly at least) condemned the action of the rogue modules

Category: Civilization Kardaschev types

classification of civilization types according to energy usage. Type I civilizations control all available energy on a single planet. Type II civilizations control all available energy in a solar system (for example, using Dyson spheres). Type III civilizations control use all available energy in an entire galaxy. Type IV civilization controls all available energy in the entire universe. The terragen bubble is currently moving towards a Type III civilization, but this will not be achieved for at least another 100,000 years.

[after Nikolai Kardaschev, Atomic Age Old Earth]

Category: Solar System or World Kariton

former Dominion world, location of Rinomolitic matrix, tightly controlled by the Vedokiklek

Kariton was colonised by the Pona-Boden nanocyborg clade from the Solar Dominion before the Version War, but they were wiped out by Metasoft autowars in 4508. It is likely the matrix is a leftover technology, and that other unexpected treasures exist on the planet.

Category: Religionkarma

Literally action, or the causes and consequences of action; that which produces change.

In Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Sophic League, the linked cause and effect that is the principle of continued existence (samsara). Many esoteric memeticities reject the concept of judgement by a supernatural deity or capricious archailect in favour of a universal law or principle, by which one's previous actions result in an effect or reaction that preserves the moral equilibrium by compensating and adjusting all actions, excessive or defective. According to some theosophical and esoteric traditions, there are many types of karma, such as individual, family, clade, social, polity, empire, po, etc.

[Sanskrit - from the verbal root kri to do, make, denoting action]

Category: ReligionKarma Yoga

The Yoga of Works.

In Hinduism, one of the three traditional approaches to at-one-ment or union with the Divine; in this case by means of unselfish action or deeds. An important principle not only in the the Sophic League but among a number of other polities, especially monastic ones.
[Sanskrit - from karma action + yoga union]

Category: Megastructure Karol Ring, The

A Banks Orbital constructed around Karol's Star (YTS 2109 873 451), Kiyoshi Sector, MPA, during the Empires age. A center of finance, edutainment, recreation, and historical and fabulist recreation.

Among the many exhibits are the Zooeum of Heroes, The Jurassic Park XXIX, and The Great Cities Of Old Earth Exhibit complex (where one can visit genuine replications of Pharaonic Thebes (always a hit with touristst from the Dominion!) Classic Rome, Medieval Florance, Shogunate Kyoto, Industrial Age London, Atomic Age New York, and Interplanetary Age Cydonia City, among many others)

Category: SocietyKarol Zooeum of Heroes

The largest zooeum of its kind, the Zooeum is set in vast parkland of the Karol banks ring, in orbit around Karol's Star.

Here tens of thousands of picoconstructed heros from mindkind's history are to be found, although only a few are allowed to be active at any one time. Perenial favourites are Hercules, Hanuman, Monkey King (both Old Earth and Penglai versions are in the Collection!), Superman, the Incredible Hulk, Wolverine, Virtual Gurl, Dogboy, Borgon, and Metadolphin-3. Because of the risk involved with their superstrength, and in some cases (e.g. Wolverine, the Hulk, and Borgon) super-rage), only a small proprtion of the numerous heros have been allowed to be licensed out, and then only under controlled conditions. However, it is beleived that a number of pirated templates are circulating in the outer volumes and some feral regions

Category: Religionkaruna

selfless compassion; love and sympathetic joy for all beings.

Buddhism and Buddhist-based and inspired religions, memeticities, and Sophic-type noeticities encourage various meditations to cultivating compassion. See also Mahakaruna

Category: Neogen species or clade KaTaWaHa

Neogenic centauroid species created in 3674 on Drayos Gamma orbital.

The KaTaWaHa are adapted to hot, dry climates. Physically, they stand approx. 2m at the shoulder and are covered in small, hard scales that help retain moisture in the body. They have four legs ending in camel like feet with a short sharp claw, a short hairless tail and two arms on the upper torso that end in hands with four fingers and two opposable thumbs. Their faces are flat with deepset eyes giving binocular vision and a small narrow nose and beak- like mouth. The KaTaWaHa are able to survive for up to 3 weeks without water and thrive at temperatures of well over 100 degrees F. Since their creation by the Power Ke'vianon, apparently because it could, the KaTaWaHa have spread in small enclaves to a number of terraformed and garden worlds, always seeking the hottest, driest parts of the planet. Their estimated population is around 300 billion.

Category: PolityKathelian Confederacy

MPA polity, founded in 2378 by a group of wormhole engineering AIs.

To some extent the Confederacy was an AI House, owning a sizeable wormhole manufacture infrastructure, controlling several systems and having many allied biont clades. Their ethos was strongly aligned with the concept of the engineer-god, expressing its divinity through design and creation. It persisted largely unchanged until 6304, when large parts of the ruling AIs vanished into apparent transcendence; this both weakened and centralized the Confederacy, making it consolidate into a mere four-system polity. Politically the Confederacy remains very much MPA mainstream, with some Meketuur influences.
