Category: RegionsLocal Arm

the arm of the Milky Way Galaxy where most of terragen civilization is still located, and which includes the Sol System It is also called the Orion Arm.

Category: AstronomyLocal Group

The cluster of galaxies to which the Milky Way and a number of nearby galaxies belong.

The Local Group includes as well as the Milky Way the larger Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and more than two dozen smaller galaxies. Most of these are dwarf ellipticals, and the Local Group is considered to be a poor cluster.

Category: MathematicsLocal Minimum / Local Maximum

In mathematical modelling, the bottom of a valley or the top of a peak; such that all nearby points are either higher (for a minimum) or lower (for a maximum). The particular valley or peak may not necessarily be the lowest or highest location in the space, see global minimum / maximum.

Category: InfotechLocal Net

Refers to any local subnet of the Known Net. May range from a single habitat intranet to a polity, planetary or interplanetary net

Category: RegionsLocal Bubble

"low density" hit plasma region of space left by former supernova some tens of millions of year ago. Approximately equivalent to the Inner Sphere

Category: EschatologyLocal Omega Point

In Classical Tiplerism, an Omega Point on the future c-boundary of a part of the universe (such as an Omegon civilization).

Category: Megastructurelofstrom loop

beanstalk-like megaconstruction based on a stream of magnetically accelerated bars linked together.

The stream is sent into space, where a station rides it using magnetic hooks, redirects it horizontally to another station, which sends it downwards to a receiving station on the ground. From this station the stream is then sent back to the launch station (the purely vertical version is called a space fountain). This structure contains a large amount of kinetic energy but, because it is only built gradually, only requires enough energy to compensate for losses when finished. Elevators are run along the streams, and geostationary installations could be placed along the horizontal top.
[after Keith Lofstrom, who set forth the first detailed calculations on it, late atomic/early information period].

Category: Infotechlogic gate

device that can perform a logical operation. May be silicon, biological, nanite, picite, femtite, or of any other scale or composition

Category: Alifelogooze

 - common slang term in the outer system for a slug-like device that etches or pigments mottos or sigils of organizations onto random objects as a form of advertising. Most are bionano systems, but occasional mechanical or neogen variants have been found. there are occasional variants allegedly designed to apply medusa fractals or other aggressive technologies. Occasionally termed "Madvert Goo", especially if self-replicating.

Category: PersonalityLohengrin

High toposophic power and ascended corporate ai in charge of former Cygexba empire, still manages the affairs of shareholders in a manner that nevertheless bears fruit in the most unpredictable ways

Category: InfotechLOKI

Localized Observer & Killer of Intellect. A program (later, a family of utilities) designed to prevent a subsystem from gaining intellect by causing a crash when sentient patterns are detected. It also causes a crash if it is disabled without the proper quantum key.

Category: MusicLokRok

A blend of traditional Toh Chi folk music and various genres of Inner Sphere popular music, characterized by a moderately fast tempo (140 - 240 bpm), extremely staccato and hypnotic rhythms, complex and unpredictable melodies that change frequently within a single musical piece, and highly poetic lyrics

Category: Solar System or WorldLombardo

inner sphere NoCoZo system, was first established as a Free Zone during the middle Federation period. The system is inhabited by corporate hyperturings, vecs, and near-baseline organics and cyborgs

Category: Astronomylong-period comet

A comet moving on a nearly parabolic orbit and thus having an orbital period of hundreds of thousands of years. Some haloist and spacer clades build their habitats on such comets

Category: Solar System or WorldLong Span Rock

Resource-poor system in Utopia Sphere space, used as a mining outpost by the Paradigm during the 5400s and early 5500s.

The occupying Paradigm force was totally destroyed during the PCO advance. The system is currently occupied by a few vecs and prospectors who make a living scavenging for what little war-wreckage (mainly nonfunctional khaki goo and paradigm fractal fragments) remains.

Category: Societylongevist

A sophont who seeks to extend their life beyond current norms (but who may not wish to live forever)

Category: Astronomyloop

A roughly spheroidal shell of interstellar gas blown outward from a star by a stellar explosion or strong stellar wind. Large bubbles are caused by supernova explosions and contain gas that is much hotter but also much more diffuse (about one atom per cubic cm) than that of the surrounding interstellar medium.

Category: ArchailectLord of Rays

Ruling Archailect of the Solar Dominion

Category: Megastructure / Megascale EngineeringLorrey Loop

Advanced form of Lofstrom Loop using three geostationary terminii in orbit at the points of an equilateral triangle, and three ground terminii opposite them, connected by a stream of vessels or particles which travel in Hofmann orbits (except when in the atmosphere), thereby saving energy.

Category: Culture or SubcultureLotek, Lo tek

Sociomorph that rejects transapient-administered ultratech society and nanotopia in favor of a technoscavenging lifestyle

Category: NanotechLove Goo

bionano/biomemetic replicators that use various tricks such as pheromonal flooding, eidectic subliminals, etc to incite pair-bonding among any sapient bionts in the vicinity.

The replicators are actually a form of neogenic microorganism and are spread through kissing, sexual intercourse, co-wupism, and any other behaviour which involves exchange of bodily fluids

From a technical perspective, Love Goo outbreaks are easily contained, as the replicator is large (usually of the orders of several tens of microns, although much smaller forms (down to virus size) while rarer, are also known) and easily sterilised or destroyed. However many infected societies or sub-cultures, having been "blissed out" and feeling a "golden glow", strenuously reject attempts at "cure". Forced inoculation may results in suicide, vandalism, or other dysfunctional forms of behaviour, and require extended and costly treatments in psychonanotherapy before the sophont in question can once again be a useful member of society

While crude forms of Love Goo date back to the early interplanetary age, most currently active Love Goo is based around Erotocracy, Zoeific, or Disarchy templates.

Category: ReligionLovecraftism

Mythos revolving around a crypto-dualistic chaos-cosmology; teaches that known space is a small island of light, beyond which, and in the interstices between which, are other intelligences of a much older nature. The name refers to an atomic age fabulist who popularised this worldview, but modern lovecraftism differs in a number of important elements

Category: Transapientslow transapients

generic term for Minds of less than 2nd singularity; also called SI:1 or basic transapients
