Category: Baseline or Near-baseline nearbaseline

generic term for any biont that is only slightly modified from the original baseline condition; specifically a human who still resembles the original baseline Homo sapiens sapiens condition.

Even today, Near Baseline Humans are the largest single category of hominid in the galaxy. Nearbaseline genemods are various; while most nearbaseline clades and individuals have a few or several significant advantages over the true baseline H. sapiens sapiens, such as enhanced memory or intelligence, enhanced reflexes, strength, immunity, hearing, or longevity, others differ only according to aesthetic appearance (anything from enhanced general beauty to fur, blue-green skin or pointy ears) or minor augmentation (such as a prehensile tail). A few, especially those living in impoverished habitats or polities, or in sewerslums, are actually disadvantaged relative to the baseline condition. Human nearbaselines are generally interfertile, if not with all other human nearbaseline clades then at least with some other nearbaseline clades.

Hence nearbaseline standard : any application standard designed for use by baselines or nearbaselines.

Category: Astronomy nebula

a huge, diffuse cloud of gas and dust in interstellar space. The gas is mostly hydrogen (H2).

Bright nebulae glow with light emitted by the gas of which they are composed (the emission nebulae) or by reflected starlight (the reflection nebulae) or both.

Dark nebulae consist of clouds of gas and dust that are not illuminated.

Protoplanetary nebulae are condensations of gas and dust in the process of forming a star and solar system

The archaic term Planetary nebulae refers to shells of gas ejected by exploding stars. Spiral nebulae was an Old Earth term for galaxies.

Category: Animal nematode, Nematoda

Major terragen invertebrate phylum,

Nematodes are unsegmented pseudocoelomic (false body cavity) round worms with tapering ends. They inhabit virtually all habitats, both free living and parasitic. Usually microscopic, but the largest species may be up to 8 meters in length. There were believed to have been over 1,000,000 terragen species, although many were lost with the ecocide of the industrial, atomic, and information ages (it is speculated GAIA may have either restored these or created new similar ones in their place). Nematodes are widely used in biotech and for gengineering purposes; their small size and relatively simple organization makes them a very popular subject to work with. Almost every terragen habitat and biosphere hospitable to baseline and nearbaseline humans includes nematodes as an essential part of soil biota (often many millions ins a cubic meter of topsoil)

Category: Philosphy Neoplatonism

Conventional Platonism has the Good as the source that is the ideal of all other realities. This was further developed in Neoplatonism as a series of emanations, a concept that became very popular during the late Consolidation and First Federation period "Outpouring School" of CyberHermetic-Platonists of Algenon Habitat (Keter dominion).

Category: Cultures and subcultures Neosemperism
Neosemperist logo
Neosemperism is the general name for the many survivalist movements that are spreading across known space. It is somewhat derived from the pre-Version War semperism, but less ideological and more practically directed. In the wake of the fragmentation of the empires, the rise of the "barbarians" and the emergence of chaos, many groups prepare for the worst. The overall view is that at best things will soon change unrecognizably, so it is a good idea to be prepared for drastic changes.

Some neosemperists are preparing or have already moved outwards, trying to set up independent colonies in the periphery or frontier. Others hide within the inner volumes, seeking out little visited systems and staking their claims to asteroids or planets where they can stockpile equipment, information and manufacturing ability (the caricature neosemperist is holing up in an asteroid with tons of replicators and blue goo, avidly interfaced into the Encyclopedia Everythingiana). There are also neosemperists (mainly aioids) spreading backup copies of themselves widely.

While there is no organisation of neosemperists, many flock to various network discussions and a loose information network has developed discussing ways of improve survival probabilities in the face of different kinds of disasters. Neosemperists in general get along well ideologically with the Backgrounders and other outsider clades, but the mutual paranoia limits their interactions.

Category: Philosophy Neotaoism

Federation age Penglaiese religion based on Old Earth Taoism and various Interplanetary age memes

In 3506 Yuan Guen, a penglaiese researcher turned philosopher began presenting his take on how old taoist ideas could be combined with information age complexity theory, Interplanetary age Emergent evolutionary mathematics, and the synergetics of atomic age visionary Buckminster Fuller. His ideas, later called neotaoism, saw reality as a complex system of systems, interlocking processes that created new forms according to certain emergent rules. These processes could be described using complexity theory and synergetics, but their applicability was universal, not just to physics and biology but also to ethics, society, design and engineering. The philosophy that emerged had many similarities with classical taoist thinking in emphasizing self-organisation and creating harmony, but it also had views on how to engineer it; it was in many ways a form of constructivist Taoism: the world is perfect in itself, but it can be perfected further.

Neotaoist symbolism and motifs remain a traditional part of some elements of penglaiese culture, retained as a matter of national identity, but no longer a part of the common person's memeticity, having long since been superseded by later hyperturing and archailect religions. However, on some isolated polities Neotaoism is still followed as it always was.

Category: Megacorp Neuropoll Inc
Neuropoll Inc

Neuropoll Inc. is a polling firm that dates back to the second federation, often exploiting advanced psychological and neurological methods to extract as much data they can. They were most known for the neuropollsters, when in the early 6300s, 20,000 citizens of New Emerton (Smith sector, NoCoZo) were wired with a system making it possible for Neuropoll to measure their reactions to a variety of products, everyday phenomena and their desires; this data is then mined to find trends, mood estimates and fashion vectors. At first the firm tried to directly use the data to produce products such as AI music to suit the tastes of the pollsters, but the performance was lacklustre. While it was possible to detect overall preferences and trends, the notoriously mercurial Newemertonians tended to shy away from anything becoming mainstream. Nowadate Neuropoll instead concentrates on producing the market data other companies need, asking the questions nobody ever thought about asking ("Do humans really like human partners instead of vecs?" - Neuropoll data was directly responsible for the Anthromorph Systems drive that lowered insystem marriages with 12%) and generally staying on the hip organobionic side of things. Their influence on much of inner sphere non-aligned marketing remains strong; their current market share is 14%. Detractors sometimes call them Neuropol.

Category: Physics neutrino

An electrically neutral, very weakly interacting massless lepton of spin 1/2, which interacts only by the weak force and gravity.

There are three known varieties in conventional matter, one in each generation of particles, associated with electron, muon, and tau leptons.

Category: Tech neutrinos, intelligence gathering

Although neutrinos cannot be used as a weapon, there are many possibilities for using neutrinos as a form of intelligence gathering.

Although most of the neutrinos will go right through the target, some (a small percentage) will come right back.

However, if you insert a time delay, you will notice, that a smaller percentage of neutrinos will come back at a time. Since neutrinos move more or less at the speed of light, you can calculate the depth of the material by factoring a time delay corresponding to a neutrinos round trip (about 1/2 light speed, or 2 pico seconds)

If the target is made out of a uniform material, the percentage of returning neutrinos per picosecond will be the same. If the material is denser, the percentage of returning neutrinos will increase during that return cycle. If the material is less dense, a smaller percentage of neutrinos will come back.

Due to the randomness of neutrinos (the percentage returning will vary by a small portion due to random interactions) more than one pulse must be used. One option involves sending out a complex waveform consisting of 1 long pulse and several short pulses (though at a higher frequency)

As neutrinos are difficult to aim, most neutrino broadcasting devices are omnidirectional. This is not a problem, all you need is a good estimate to the range of the contacts surface, anything that arrives afterword (in time delay) will be ignored for that contact.

Resolution can be increased in two ways. increasing the amount of neutrinos broadcast. placing another sensor on the backside of the target (with a synchronized atomic clock)

Although no detector is perfect, it will only be able to detect a small portion of returning neutrinos itself, however, no detector for any for form of radiation is "perfect", operators and technicians rely on calibration from a known source.

Neutrinos can also be used as a form of communication. the broadcast will be omnidirectional, but with proper security, the enemy (or hackers) would still need years of quantum CPU time to decode. Although a detector will only catch a small portion of the neutrinos, the rhythm of receives neutrinos will be the information carrier.

Category: Physics neutron

uncharged atomic nuclear particle. It has a mass slightly greater than a proton. In beta decay, a neutron decays into a proton, an electron, and an anti-neutrino.

Category: Astronomy neutron star

a very small, dense star, which is composed mostly of tightly-packed neutrons (neutronium).

This hard-to-see body, the remnant of a star after it has exploded as a supernova, has a thin atmosphere of superhot hydrogen plasma and a crust. It has a diameter of about 5-16 km and a density of roughly 10 15 gm/cm3. This hard-to-see body has a thin atmosphere of superhot hydrogen plasma and a crust of mainly iron and other heavy nuclei. Beneath the crust lies a mantle of superfluid neutronium, which at the core can become mixed with quark matter. Most neutron stars rotate fast, with periods ranging from a few seconds down to milliseconds.

Category: Physics neutronium

Super-dense state of matter made entirely of neutrons compacted under extremely high gravitation pressure. Occurs naturally in neutron stars. Low density artificial neutronium is an important element in some GUT-drive cores. Natural neutronium tends to be a superfluid, but artificially stabilized neutronium often is formed into solid ultrathin sheets.

Category: Empire New Daffy Panoparchy
Middle Regions Interstellar SuperPolity, corewards region of the former TrueModel volume. The planet New Daffy was colonised in 8230 by heretic expansionists from the Negentropy Federation world of Greylag. They set up a rigid planned society, which promptly collapsed after a few generations. mainly due to widespread corruption and misuse of power. An attempt was made to set up a totally democratic and incorruptible society using ubiquitous surveillance, where everyone could watch everyone else and especially their superiors, hence ensuring accountability. After a long period of social unrest the culture had adapted, and the Panoparchy began to prosper in 8400. It began a cooperation with the NoCoZo to market its surveillance technology to neighbouring worlds, and over the next millennium it successfully "converted" their societies to the same ubiquitous surveillance democracy it upheld. Over the last 600 years the Panoparchy has grown into a major local power, known to be scrupulously fair in its dealings but honestly rather boring. There are signs that it is ossifying into a "rule by busybodies" rather than true democracy, and unless it is somehow revitalized it will fall. The Daffy authorities are of course aware of this and doing everything they can.

Category: World or Solar System New Duibbiyat

Terran Federation system, colonised by First Federation loyalists during the early Empires period

The colonization was part of the so called bulwark against the new imperial and missionary sephirotics, but as it later turned out the colonizers were themselves memetically manipulated by Second Toposophic Terran Federation administration ai. While the several small rockballs were difficult to terraform (eventually the innermost world was made into an industrial center and the other two paraterraformed), the single eujovian and two microjovians and their large association of moons provided raw materials for extensive orbital habitats and bishop rings. Despite TF neutrality the system was extensively damaged during the Version War by revisionists and standardizationist attempts to occupy the sole strategic stargate. The ComEmp period saw extensive restoration and a cultural and economic flowering, although a large rogue Diamond Network ISO caused headaches for the local ai administrators when it tried to convert several major habitats to auxiliary processing nodes, in violation of the Treaty of Tragadi Gap. Fortunately the situation was resolved through Keterist and OC mediation and the ISO was encouraged to migrate rimwards (it was last reported in Metasoft Space, near the Dominion border). New Duibbiyat is currently a prosperous if somewhat uninteresting Terran Federation member system

(Lalande 21185 I) One of the earliest colonisation targets. The system consists of a number of gas giants rich in He3. The first colonists were a desperate team of Genetekkers fleeing the nanodisaster. During the Sol System dark ages the society flourished, and even hosted several waves of "backyarders" and early slowship (0.05 c) hider clades fleeing what they saw as excessive ai-rule in Solsys. Some time in the late 2800s things began to fall apart - a combination of internal conflict between local factions, and possibly infection by a replicator that arrived with the later backyarders and merged with the local bionano, although the facts are still dispute. In any case, only degenerate survivors inhabited the decaying orbital habitats when the First Federation megacorps arrived in 3144. These persisted for a few decades afterwards, until becoming totally assimilated as their children all joined the new world. (The habitat remains a museum.)

The system quickly grew into a business paradise, with just a token Federation oversight and a booming space industry. In the later federation era with the emergence of the higher singularity picotech AIs and opening of the new frontier, New L4 was gradually eclipsed and lost much of the relevance. It has steadily lost population and trade, and now remains just another small red dwarf orbital culture. Currently Independent (non-aligned), consisting of 43 different polities. The There is also a small Curatorial presence in the system. See also Lalande 21185

Category: Polity New Robinson

Martian colony on Oberon, Middle Interplanetary to Early First Federation period.

A small but prosperous and high tech community, and important early strategic presence for the Mars republic in the cis-Uranus sphere, New Robinson survived the nanoswarms, thanks to advanced bionano blue goo. However the destruction of one of the domes meant the loss of the medical bodysculpting unit. The survivors, while still retaining medical and rejuvenation bionano were unable to rectify the affects of gerontism that developed over the next four and a half centuries during which the isolated colony became a caste-based Gerontocracy. Rather than see this as a disadvantage, the leaders used their age-related physiology as a sign of being the elect.

Like many isolated cultures and dark age clades, the newrobinsonites resisted the Federation for some time, seeking to preserve their traditional way of life, and contemptuous of the youth-obsessed inner solsys society. Inevitably, their own younger people rebelled or left for the inner solsys worlds and habitats. When the development corporations moved in the remaining newrobinsonists decided to join the Yang geronotomorphs. The last geronotocrat left Oberon in 3192

11 Leo Minoris II. First reached by Lagrange Defenders, who sold the development rights to New Mars Development. The company named the AreanXeric planet New Mars and offered it as the perfect place for martian-adapted tweaks to settle. This proved highly popular among some ex-martian clades of the Sol system who emigrated nearly completely. Being relatively wealthy they brought with them a good investment climate, and New Mars began to prosper.

As interstellar commerce developed, New Mars joined the NoCoZo at the earliest opportunity. It has remained a free market bastion, a rival to Merrion, Mutual Satisfaction and Atlantis in interstellar finance. Most of the system is a Tier II member, and the New Mars Lagrange points (called Lagfor and Lagfiv) are Tier III members, home to several banking habitats.

Today New Mars is one of the most populous systems, with over 20 billion inhabitants. The tweaks of New Mars proper are a minority, although through several holding companies and foundations they own a sizable chunk of the infrastructure in the system. The planet has been extensively developed, but remains a dry Mars-like world with very little free water and thin air. The flag of New Mars is derived from the Old Mars flag, with three white stars on top to represent the new system.

Category: Personality Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
Old Earth English mathematician and physicist who invented calculus (simultaneously, but independently of Leibniz), formulated the laws of gravitation, investigated the nature of light (he discovered that sunlight is made of light of different colors), and the laws of motion:
1. An object in uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it (the Law of Inertia).
2. A force causes a change in the velocity (acceleration) of an object (F=ma).
3. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Newton's genome was successfully isolated by Hugenuii Templates, a NoCoZo persona template corp that was briefly successful during the late consolidation period selling personae of famous Old Earth personalities.
