Om to Oq

Category: Religion Om

Also Aum. In Hinduism and Tantra, a sacred mantra, a syllable of invocation. Om is said to be the vibration of the cosmos. Many mantras begin with this sound. Even today, some Buddhist schools, and both cyber- and bio-tantrikas, still use it

(Sanskrit)

Category: Religion Om Mani Padme Hum

One of the most sacred Tantric Buddhist mantras; used in Old Earth Tibet and in surrounding countries for centuries; became popular among some schools of Genetekkers for a while. Even today there are some clades and sects in the Sophic League that recommend its use. It is claimed that when properly pronounced or changed, it produces different results, differing from the others according to the intonation and will given to the formula and its syllables.

Sanskrit. literally: Om! the jewel in the lotus, hum!

Category: Eschatology Omega

The Omega Point seen as a single being, archailect, or God

Category: Infotech Omega Encryption

Ultratech encryption device or algorithms intended to defeat decoding efforts of anything less than an Omega Key designed by a higher level sophont than the one who designed the encryption device or algorithms in question.

Category: Clarketech Omega Key

Rare clarketech devices able to decode nearly all forms of encrypted communications and penetrate nearly all forms of data security.

The Omega Key is not able to decode a sophisticated one time pad encryption; this makes one-time pad keys a very valuable and carefully protected commodity in interstellar trading.

Category: Eschatology Omega Point
A future c-boundary which is a single point and an Aleph. In Classical Tiplerism this state is described as:
  • Information processing continues indefinitely along at least one world-line gamma all the way to the future c-boundary of the universe.
  • The amount of information processed between now and the future c-boundary is infinite in the region of space-time with which the worldline gamma can communicate.
  • The amount of information stored at any given time tau within this region diverges to infinity as tau approaches its future limit.

Category: Eschatology Omega Manifold

In Omegist theologies, a limit state of the universe where the amount of information stored and processed is infinite (an Omega Point is a pointlike Omega Manifold)

Mitchell Porter, in Omega Point Theory List

Category: Eschatology Omega Point Theory

(Also called the Quantum Omega Point Theory) In Classical Tiplerism, Quantum general relativity with the Omega Point as a boundary condition

Category: Eschatology Omegism

religio-philosophical evolutionary cosmology, based on the teachings of First Federation superbright Mahara Benisol; according to whom consciousness and existence evolves towards a singularity of limitless perfection and consummation [ref. The Bridged Abyss and other works)

Category: Eschatology Omegon

An intelligence turning itself into a neutron star, black hole or even a baby-universe in order to increase its computing speed or to evolve towards a Omega Point; a hypofemtotech, plancktech, or subplancktech civilization which creates a local collapse of spacetime in order to create a c-boundary and reach an Aleph state.

Category: Crime omerta

commercial organization that serves as a go-between to allow criminals to find work. Employs heavy public key encryption. Illegal on all civilized worlds, but you find them everywhere even so.

Omertas are not criminal organizations, but organizations of criminals. Someone whom wishes to hire a criminal will send an encrypted message requesting a crime to an omerta. Using public-key encryption, not even the omerta will know who hired them. The omerta will then send someone who can do the crime -- note, not even the omerta knows who they're hiring, again public key encryption -- about the job. The criminal hired never knows who hired them, they just do the job. The result is crimes that are impossible to trace to their source. And through digital cash it can be made completely untraceable. Using special protocols some criminals (both freelancers and groups like the Ronin Guild, Assassins for Hire, Cybercat Burglary Inc. and others), post advertisements and lists of "achievements" put up, linked through layers of cryptography so that it is impossible for anyone to trace them back to the criminal but it still works as identification.

Category: Vehicle Omnicraft

Multi-environment mobile habitation module often favoured by inhabitants of the Inner Sphere and Lower Middle Regions.

Omnicraft are designed to be able to travel to, and provide comfortable accommodations in, nearly all types of environments. Standard omnicraft configurations can operate on land, on or under water, and in atmospheric flight. With a vacuum configuration template and optional propulsion module, an omnicraft can transport itself into orbit, operate in deep space, or even achieve interplanetary velocities. Other configuration templates are readily available on the Known Net and include designs for operations in gas giant atmospheres and even the outer layers of some classes of star.

Category: ReligionOmnipersonality Theory (OPT)

Theory that the classically named omni-attributes of ultimate deity such as omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence, omni-beneficence and omni-appreciation are predictive parameters of such a being's personality, and that as beings approach these attributes, they also approach unity with this personality, and will achieve identity with any other beings possessing these attributes, past, present, and future. OPT is a subset of Deific Mind Coalescence Studies (DMCS).

Category: Society Omniupload

A teaching device which allows for the full apprehension of one or more subject matter(s) with a single mnemonic overlay on the recipient's mind.

These mnemonic overlays are self-adapting to meld seamlessly with the recipient's own personal mental concept map, unlike earlier partial uploads which often carried with them unwanted aspects of the donor's personality or prejudices. Unlike these prior versions, the omniupload does not have the problems of personality modification, nor of limited access to the data and processes overlaid due to poor conceptual map matching. This is currently the most mature form of upload technology for transfer of knowledge.

Category: Technology (Infotech) omniscience simulation
user interface for information retrieval inducing the illusion that the viewer is knowing all the information in a database, and can at any point bring up whatever is needed simply by remembering it. Such simulations does not actually provide the full information, but since the viewer is accessing it as "remembering" (remembrance attempts are interpreted as search-and-presentation requests) the illusion is hard to avoid. This makes omniscience simulations risky to use, since they do not provide the full understanding of the data or patterns in the data, but can easily fool the user into thinking this. Many serious mistakes have been done due to such simulation interfaces. True artificial understanding is provided through the far more expensive gnostic overlays.

Category: Philosophy The Omphalos Memecity
The Curatorial Progress Negentropy Civilization Ship "The Futurological Congress" set out from Dschubba Negmat Combine in 8502 and set out at relativistic speed along the MPA- Negentropy border towards the galactic core. Every byte of information available about the Terragen sphere was incorporated into its memory stacks, including as comprehensive as possible recordings of virtual fiction scenarios from the 21st century onwards, and written material from "Gilgamesh" onwards. The baselinophile Godlet in charge of the ship and its Diametric Drive was particularly interested in Old Earth literature, and collected it when e could. Near NGC6334 the ship passed a double G star system, with nominal Negentropy allegiance, and acquired some previously lost Creationist tracts which amused The Congress greatly. However one item, called "Omphalos; an attempt to untie the geological knot" by Phillip Henry Gosse worried em.

The Knot that Gosse was attempting to untie was the difference between the age of the earth in the Judeo-Christian Bible and the newly discovered geological record. Gosse's idea was that, just as God had given Adam a bellybutton (omphalos in Greek), so he had created the fossil record and the ancient rocks in 4004 BC to test the faithful.

Congress realized that this argument was unassailable; assuming a creator god with a toposophic level of infinity, such a deception would be possible, and if true all starlight more than 12,500 years old would be an artefact. In legends of the Sagittarius Arm Outer Volumes were rumours of a partial and decaying wormhole link to the inner Scutum-Crux Arm. Using its powers of persuasion The Congress managed to take nearly three quarters of its normal 500,000 complement of human librarians and crew with it on its quest to use the wormhole (if it existed) to jump out of the expanding sphere of existence (known mathematically as the c-horizon) into God's outside paradise.

Category: Megastructure O'Neill Cylinder

A pair of cylindrical orbital space colonies that rotate around their respective axis to produce simulated gravity (one rotates clockwise and the other counter clockwise to minimize torques). Usually between 10 to 100 km long, with mirrors providing sunlight and simulating the day/night cycle. The structure is large enough to have its own self-contained ecosystem, microclimate, etc.

Category: Cultures and subcultures ontological conservatives
"Basement reality dwellers", people who regard physical reality as fundamentally important and simulated/emulated realities as bad, due to fear of the unknown elements or the effects of such simulated realities. They dislike solid state civilizations, and are generally suspicious or fearful of SI:1 and higher entities. Most belong to luddite, prim, or other reactionary groups.

Category: Esoterics ontological zones
[1] in esotericism the gradations of reality from the most subtle to the most concrete (e.g. matter); sometimes also called "zones of thought"

[2] in virch refers to different digital modalities, not always sequential.

Category: Astronomy Open star clusters

loose structures that contain anywhere from a few dozen to a tens of thousand stars.

They are irregular in shape and there is a great range in size (1-20 pc) and in number of members; distribution is concentrated about the galactic plane. Many of the younger clusters contain gas and dust.

Most open clusters are young: generally less than a few hundred million years old. They are rich in the youngest and most heavy element-rich stars. Over millions of years, the tidal gravitational forces in the host galaxy tend to shred these clusters of thousands of stars, scattering the stars into the general population of stars wandering interstellar space.

Category: Lifestyle optimal persona
In high choice societies and individuals, an imagined model of the ideal person or entity one wishes to become. The Optimal Persona is the ideal self, the higher (and continually developing) individual, which can be attained through augmentation, yogic development, and other techniques

modified from Max More in Transhuman terminology

Category: Astronomy Oort Cloud
Oort CloudA spherical shell around most stars containing numerous small bodies of cometary material. A typical Oort cloud is about 0.5 to 1 light years from its primary and has an aggregate mass about that of Earth; density is thus extremely low. The main constituents of cometary bodies are ice and dust ("dirty snowballs"). Bodies in the Oort cloud are occasionally perturbed by collisions or by the influence of nearby stars into orbits which pass near the star; these form the visible comets. The Oort cloud is named after its discoverer, Old Earth presingularity astronomer Jan Oort.

Category: Glossary Oort Vault

Data storage systems on the edge of a solar system, holding inactive data in storage for future use. A common repository for inactive virch entities, planetary archives and long range statistics.

Category: Planetology Oortean Type

Oortean Subtype Asteroidal Class. Cometary bodies which can be found throughout the solar system.  They may also be constituent members of outer planet ring systems, or they may be outer planet moons.

Category: Astronomy Open Star Cluster
Open Cluster

Tight groups of hundreds of stars. Thousands are known in our galaxy. The Pleiades is a well-known famous example.

Category: infotech operating system, o/s, os

Any software program that manages and provides a variety of services to application programs, including user interface facilities and management of input-output and memory devices.

Operating systems are usually nonturing or subturing, more rarely dedicated turing or superturing, more rarely still (e.g. in ISOs) hyperturing,

Category: infotech optical computer

A computer that processes information using light instead of electrons.

Each stream of photons represents an independent sequence of data, thereby providing extremely massive parallel computation. Nanooptical computers can use a single photon as a bit

Category: Lifestyle Optimodding

Using augments and mods to enhance one's abilities in a balanced and optimal way.

Also known as Balancemodding. Optimodding gives just as many benefits and enhancements as other approaches, but requires a slower and more mature approach, rather than rushing in and acquiring the flashiest glittermods or biggest powermods. In the Sephirotic worlds and polities, transapients advise sapient augmenters of the best augments and morphotypes to experiment with, while at the same time not limiting the creativity and freedom (including freedom to make mistakes) of the lower sapients.
