Category: ReligionSaint Marxism

Late Interplanetary Age Old Earth religion based on reinterpretation of industrial age economic philosopher Karl Marx's text Das Kapital in terms of nanotech and distributed automation. Considers Marx a "saint" but not an avatar. The religion went through several local revivals during the early first federation period, and was particularly popular among disenfranchised vecs.

Category: EschatologySabinian Kalyptism

Form of kalyptism that all stable civilizations eventually disintegrate, according to specific variables.

Sabinian Kalyptism (not to be confused with Sabinian Metahistoricism, a totally different and altogether less controversial paradigm) claims on the basis of cultural, historical, comparative, galactocentric astrological, and exopaleontological evidence - that all stable civilizations are due to disintegrate at some time, according to a specific set of variables. It predicts that civilization collapse will be preceded by increasing barbarian incursions from the periphery, cessation of expansion of borders of the central powers, and weakening or partial breakdown of regulating socio-memetic structures. Most official Predictive Historians consider Sabinian Kalyptism to be no more valid then the more hysterical religious forms of Kalyptism that occur with regular frequency whenever some crisis or other emerges. During the current period a number of schools and sects and further interpretations have developed from the original Sabinian Kalyptism.

Category: Animalssabre-tooth cat

Any large extinct terragen feline of the sub-family Machairodontinae.

The late Pleistocene American sabre-tooth Smilodon fatilis was a popular subject for Lazurogenics during the middle and late information period, as part of the Pleistocene Park project. However, most other species of this lineage were not restored until much later, during the great Lazurogenics fad of the middle Empires period when computronium banks and dedicated hyperturings enable advanced gene-sequencing. While several sabre-tooth species have been provolved (the Machairodus sapiens of the Utopia Sphere and NoCoZo, and the Smilodon superior of the inner Perseus rift and nominal Metasoft and Sophic League being particularly noteworthy examples), most machairodontines in the galaxy today tend to be novelty pets, and are especially popular in the Solar Dominion and parts of the NoCoZo (e.g. Atlantis).

A type of surface that is neither a peak nor a valley but still has a zero gradient.

Saddles are used in modelling a wide range of topologies - from the curvature of space-time to certain membranotoposophies. The Keterist Institute of Transapient Saddle Studies on the "B" Ring Band of the Pidelo Megastructure, Pidelo [Keter dominion], is an artistic SI:1 community dedicated to various interpretations of Saddle Simulations, especially in the area of Applied Mathematical Art.

Category: General TechSafety Blades

A common implement in most work areas are safety blades. These are knives with smart matter cutting surfaces and various sensor capabilities. The basic premise is a device which will stay ever- sharp and ready to cut, but will not cut unless it is held in a living hand, nor will it cut a living being.

These devices utilize a number of different methods - the initial versions were temperature-specific, refusing to cut materials in the range of normal human body temperature (causing some recipes to be changed, once they were mandated for sole use in some polities).
Later versions utilize additional sensorium information, such as electromagnetic information, sensor readings of the manipulator wielding it, etc.. Specific versions are also in use in vec and heavily tweaked or altered clades, to take their radically different 'tell-tales' into account.
Early versions were often limited to local clades' "life-signs", be that a certain temperature, moisture content, EM flux pattern, density, and/or other indicia. This often led to difficulties as other clades came into contact with these otherwise-safe tools.

Category: RegionSagittarius Dwarf Galaxy (SagDIG).
M 31 / NGC 598

This minor irregular galaxy is located at the opposite end of the galactic core to settled space.

The Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy is approximately 10,000 light years in diameter, and roughly spheroid in shape, . It is adjacent to, possibly colliding with, the base of the Outer Arm. Relativistic exploration missions have departed for this galaxy but are not expected to arrive for many tens of thousands of years.

Category: RegionSagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG).
This minor galaxy has been spread out by a still on-going collision with the Milky Way. The closest parts of this remnant have been colonised by the Red Star M'Pire.

Category: RegionSagittarius Outer Volumes

Extensive region of space coreward of the Sagittarius Transcultural Cooperation and MPA space, popular with development and strategic interests because it is seen as the gateway to the Sagittarius Arm.

Category: WarfareSagittarius Periphery Wars

A serious of skirmishes, blights, and territorial wars along the Sagittarius frontier during the middle Empires period. The potentially worst of these were defused by the Specialist in a series of oft-recounted real-life interventions.

Category: MegacorpSagittarius Project

Major exploration project backed by a number of research and colonization megacorporations in the Establishment and early Consolidation era.

The Sagittarius Project attempted to set up wormhole links to the Sagittarius arm and continue inwards to the galactic core. Over time, the Project developed into a megacorp-house like most others (eventually becoming the Sagittarius Sphere), and the thrust towards the core was replaced by exploiting the many new worlds found in the Sagittarius arm. Some research vessels are still on their way towards the core, and are expected back in a few millennia.

Category: RegionSagittarius sector

Also, "Sagittarius quadrant", loosely defined region that encompasses much of the coreward Outer Volumes. Also known as "The Corewards".

Category: EmpireSagittarius Sphere

Major Consolidation and Second Federation Empire / House.

The Sagittarius Sphere developed from the Sagittarius Project to became a prosperous and diverse empire, with close ties to their old Non-Coercive Zone backers. Indeed, it was originally the Sagittarius Free Zone (actually a corporate House and a Free Zone only in name), before the spread of the imperial archailects caused a factionalising of the major Free Zones into discrete empires. It allowed many persecuted or marginal groups to settle within its domain, reasoning that it would be a long-term investment and a subtle way of brain-drain the other Houses.

During the middle Empires period the Sagittarius Sphere had become an aggressively expanding corporate-clade combines pushing out the frontier towards the Sagittarius Arm. Unfortunately it became embroiled in a number of border wars and disputes with its equally aggressive expansive neighbour, the Softbot Cathedrals. After a millennium of rivalry and skirmishes, and suffering territorial and memetic losses, the newly militant leadership attacked the Cathedrals with strangelet weapons, resulting the death of billions of sentient beings. The three bordering archailectic powers responded to this atrocity by sending in relativistic fleets, and the Sphere was formally broken up in 6305. The region remained an unstable power vacuum until, as part of the ComEmp reconstruction in the post Version-War period, the Sagittarius Transcultural Cooperation was established in its place.

The Sag sphere was to a large extent a NoCoZo daughter realm, but with its own peculiar mixture of the Heavenly Reach and the Invisible Hand. Possibly this isolation from mainbrain oversight caused the disaster. Part of the Sag Sphere military-semantic complex engaged in extreme hyperevolution in order to find new weapons against the advancing Negentropists and Softbot Cathedrals. These systems attempted to create hyperturing weaponry, but got into an uncontrolled ascension cascade. At the same time it looked like a grand success: they were producing multi-singularity weaponry - or at least something that was aggressive. The Softbots encountered a truly nasty perversion, which was partially deliberate. While it did a terrifying swift job of the Softbots, it also infiltrated the military-semantic complex. When the rest of the sphere discovered this every sane player withdrew and many of the former allies of the Sphere began to reconsider their position (especially since the Sphere might be turning into a grand perversion). While the perversion quickly ran out, apparently as a result of a high order collapse and partial transcension, the remaining strange matter viruses and devastated Sphere witness that this was the so far most serious perversion event in known history.

Category: EsotericsSahasrara

The highest of the seven chakras, placed by some commentators at the crown of the head, by others some centimetres or more above.

In some yoga schools it is taken as a point for mental focus, among other schools as the location of the "mental atom". It is also identified with Shiva and the transcendent pole of existence in the original Tantrika system. When the consciousness (or the ascending kundalini energy) reaches Sahasrara it is said that the YTogi attains liberation.

Category: AnimalSailor

Aquatic crustacean-like lifeform that is a natural sailboat.

Sailors range in size from about a meter to 3 meters in length. Their soft bodies are enclosed in a hard shell filled with various chambers that can be filled and emptied with water or air to control ballast. They have a series of fins along their underside to control direction and provide some propulsion in calm seas, but their main form of locomotion is a set of three large fins on their backs that act like a ships sails. A complex muscle and tendon structure allow the sailor to turn and orient its sails to catch the wind and to collapse the fins along its back when resting or in rough weather. Sailors are air breathers like dolphins or porpoises and fill much the same ecological niche on their world. They are water breathers and can fill their shells with water and collapse their sails to sink beneath the surface and either rest on the bottom or proceed more slowly using their fins.

in this context, when a biosphere (usually a large one, like a planet), is poisoned to make it uninhabitable (c.f. ecophagy). A subcategory of this is when a world or habitat is selectively poisoned in such a way that it becomes uninhabitable for the original natives/colonists, but is now inhabitable by the poisoners. This might be accomplished through climatic change, chemical processes, alteration of atmospheric albedo (or other radiation increasing or decreasing measures), or possibly other means. Halophiles find the human term for this perversity particularly ironic.

Category: Religionsamadhi

Deep meditation and contemplation where rational thought and sense of self, as well as consciousness of the external world, disappears; striving for enlightenment through intense one-pointed focus.

Samadhi is very popular throughout the Negentropy Alliance and Sophic League. Although samadhi can be attained naturally through long discipline, and indeed purists argue that this is the only true samadhi, for most sophont beings samadhi is attained through the help of specific bio-, nano- cyber- and wetware. Category: Musicsampler jam
An ongoing fad in the Metasoft sphere of influence for the last hundred years or so is the sampler jam. In this art form, the audience is often the star of the show. At the beginning of the concert, as the audience enters the performance venue, they are given a brief (usually 60-second) shot at a microphone. The mike feeds into a sampling bank. People take turns going up on stage to one of the several (usually 4 to 15) sampler controllers. The audience can boo someone/thing off the stage, and does so for the less than competent, but a jam between true experts is an almost surreal experience.

The audiences have gotten into the spirit of the concert almost from the beginning and generally take pains to fill their 60 seconds with everything from rant to radiant hiss to odd biological noises to... well, just about anything. The only things NOT allowed are subliminals (which the bank is programmed to recognize) and control codes (of which the public-safety-recognized ones are programmed into secured databanks and access rented to double check the content - no one needs to loose literal control!)

After that, it's improvisational music, based off of what the mixmasters find in their sampling banks. It's often hilarious (and sometimes played up to by the performer) when the performer first approaches a bank with unknown samples. A true master often has created a simple melody within a half-dozen strokes, slowly expanding their range and complexity as they explore the other banks for useful bits.

Category: Religionsamsara

Popular Buddhist and Sophic term for embodied existence; the state of non-enlightenment.

In a number of religions, especially some schools of Old Earth Buddhism and Hinduism (even up to the first Federation period), existence in the world was seen as an evil, and escape samsara meant completely withdrawing from embodied existence into quiescent nirvana. This is still advocated by some elements of Xenodharama, as well as by Neobuddhist Orthodoxy. In many traditions of Sophism however (especially those with strong Pozen elements), and among the disciples of the Reconstructed Nagarjuna, while samsara is to be rejected for sambodhi, sambodhi itself is not seen as an other-worldly state but as the complete actualization of existence in the universe

Category: macrotechsanta claus machine

A robust matter compiler employing nano-, meso- micro- and macrotech. Placed on a planetary surface it can build anything out of available material

What distinguishes a Santa Claus machine from an ordinary matter compiler is that it can fulfil the users wishes; that requires at least turingrade intelligence. The problem is of course that if it is just that smart, then an unscrupulous user can fool it into doing something dangerous. Most santas either have very circumscribed in its abilities or be smarter than the user, able to see through ethically harmful requests.

Unregulated santas can become very dangerous, and polities that allow uncontrolled Santas and lack very pervasive "immune systems" (be they nanoscale, legal or cliological) - such as some of the more "wild frontier" ultralibertarian baseline and nearbaseline polities, tend to crash in a short period of time.

sapphiroid

An alternative term for corundumoid, suggestive of sapphire, which is a blue form of corundum. Early in history, and well into the Information Age, sapphires were a valuable and rare gem stone, and the name was considered more attractive because it implied value. Corundumoid was considered too suggestive of carborundum, an industrial material, and alternative names derived from other coloured forms of corundum, such as ruby, were less euphonious.

    Category: PhilosophySapient Authoritarianism

A pro-hierarchical philosophical movement that emerged during the Age of Expansion, in reaction to Sapient Egalitarianism.

It states that all sapients must follow the example of the hypersapients and establish a social hierarchy based upon intelligence, skill, professional success, wealth etc. Adopting and reviving some ancient Confucian principles, this hierarchy extends beyond the workplace into everyday life. Ironically, it is more popular in some small baseline colonies than in many superbright systems. Practitioners of this belief actually see it as more democratic than Sapient Egalitarianism, for it presumably takes much authority and decision-making away from hypersapients and into the hands of (an elite minority of) sapients.

    Category: ProlveSapient Chimpanzee
[Pan sapiens, Pan superior, etc.]. The first species to be provolved, during the Information age. Accompanied by protests from luddite and religious groups. Various modifications from the baseline chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) during and following provolve include a larger cranium and smaller face, greater pelvic arcs to birth big-brained offspring, more erect posture, and fully opposable thumbs. During the middle interplanetary period, in the face of on-going Earth-side and even CisLunar prejudice, many Sapientchimps broke with the main inner solsys culture and migrated outwards to the Jovian League and the halo habitats. During the nanoswarm dark ages some of these migrated further out, joining the Genetekker and backyarder exodus and ended up at Tau Ceti, Lalande 21185, the Barnard Belt, Sirius, and other nearby systems. Many of these solar systems host influential local old clade and old house neochimp populations even today. However, the Sapientchimps have been unable to gain the financial prosperity of the dolphins and Vedokiklek (insect provolves), the mystical charisma of the whale provolves, or the ubiquity of the felid, canid, or rodent provolves .

    Category: PhilosophySapient Egalitarianism

A democratic philosophical movement that emerged during the early Age of Expansion.

It states that, compared with the power and wisdom of hypersapients, the idea of mere sapients holding total authority over other sapients seems vain and ludicrous. Authority is considered most appropriate in the workplace (especially where authority is essential, such as the military) and where issues of criminal justice are raised. Even under such circumstances, many important decisions are left to hyperturings, and sapient employees and underlings are permitted (and even encouraged) to politely question the decisions of their sapient "superiors".

Category: AlienThe Saro-Mbuna - Roduimo affair
Although in the field there have been a few incidents between competing expeditions, academically there is much exchange between the Institutes in the Inner Sphere.

One incident happened soon after the rise of the HIE. An arrogant young post-doc, Yosh Saro-Mbuna, frustrated with the seeming impossibility of career advancement at the very conservative and to him, anti-meritocratic Eden Institute's dept. of Xenopaleology (they just didn't recognize his genius), did the unthinkable and joined the HIE (a sign of the recruitment trend to come). Saro-Mbuna, a brash and rather uncivil scientist, deeply offended his mentor (and tenured-for-life superior in rank) Kenth Roduimo. This resentment was unfortunate as both learned of an alien city on the Type-L moon 72 Aurigae VII-B through a shared contact, the artifact-pirate Loretta Akim. (In those days such 'contacts' were more common, for beneath the conservative veneer the Eden Institutes were in a period of heavy infighting and corruption, and the new HIE was not any more ethical in early dealings as its young members tried to score a coup that would bring them to leadership before the HIE became as rigid and lethargic as the EIXp).

Saro-Mbuna and Roduimo both managed to secure grants, charter starships and arrive at 72 Aurigae within a month of each other (there being only one wormhole at the time going anywhere near there). The two rivals hardly spoke to each other, each setting up on opposite sides of the ice/mud continent surrounding the alien outpost complex. In the rush to excavate and try to be the first to find an inscribed "rosetta stone" or repairable technology, scientific procedures were barely observed (and mainly thought of when each man tried to document the other's incompetence). Roduimo ignored the plight of a HIE team trapped in a cave-in; Saro-Mbuna stole emergency supplies mistakenly airdropped near his camp by a EIXp shuttle. Soon each team started manufacturing fake alien relics and burying them where the rival team would find them.

There were few ways this incident could end well; it was probably fortunate that the alien site turned out to have been looted not only by Akim (on the surface only) but also by some other species that had dug into the base 3 million years ago, so that little valuable was lost. Saro-Mbuna was eventually tied up and forced to leave by several of the HIE grad students who had tired of his act, while Roduimo was badly injured and several of his team killed when trying to desperately find other sites on the moon during an ammonia- ice storm (although Roduimo blamed his poorly-chosen shuttle pilot, not his own vengeful mindset, for the crash).

After the two expeditions returned, the Council of the HIE revoked Saro-Mbuna's funding and proposed to some of the younger of their EIXp colleagues that a 'scientific ethics' agreement be formalized and publicized. It took some time before enough of these scientists had worked their way up to leadership on Eden, but eventually the rules, adopted in the year 5827, were instrumental in reducing the degree of corruption in the scientific organizations and minimizing the degree of competition, although never eliminating it outright.

Roduimo is famous for having his brain preserved so that his neural density could be proven superior to Saro-Mbuna's. Unfortunately Saro-Mbuna's third expedition into the territory of the Ejkahh'illlauah cloudgulpers disappeared without a trace, so the comparison never took place, and Roduimo's brain was later auctioned off by Vija Akim, granddaughter of the famous pirate and head of the Inner Sphere Alien Artifact Auction House (ISAAAH).

In contrast to the three "traditional" Sophic capitals of Ararat, New Taylor, and Sacred Heart, Satyaloka is off-limits to ordinary sophonts and low transapients, but sometimes even a simple baseline will be blessed by allowing to visit, if they have shown themselves to be of sufficient purity and spiritual innocence.

Distinguished by a uniform trend to gigantism (up to 80 tonnes in several species - the maximum for terrestrial earth-normal gravity physiology), elephantine quadrupedal posture, huge necks and long tails, and tiny head. The sacral ganglion was enlarged into a second "brain".

Sauropods have always been a popular subject for lazurogenesis, featuring large in the baseline human imagination. A number of species were lazurogened during the later first federation and consolidation periods, and some of these were then provolved.

NeoSauropod provolves, mostly space adapted and with extensive bioborgization, are common in some local habitats around Owen, a few converted asteroids elsewhere in the Utopia Sphere, and throughout much of the middle hinterworlds Negentropy Alliance.
