Sc to Sd

Category: Warfare scale war

war occurring between protagonists of a different speeds and component densities, e.g. between (predominantly) baseline/macrotech and nanoscale/nanotech, or between nanoscale/nanotech and picoscale/picotech. Inevitably the denser, faster tech will always win, unless the disadvantaged side gets help from a friendly AI God

Category: Psychology scale anxiety

the fear that a sophont or polity or clade of a lower or slower technological grade or density feels when confronted with a sentient or polity or phyle of a higher grade of tech or density. e.g. SI:<1 sophonts may feel anxious or intimidated by transapient powers, especially if the latter behave in an unpredictable or seemingly irrational way.

Category: Language Scansolarian

Solarian language developed on the rimwards transition from Anglic and old Scandinavian elements.

Category: Math scalar

A single number, as opposed to a multidimensional vector or matrix.

Category: Nanotech scanning probe microscope

An atomic and information age microscope-manipulator that allowed researchers to see individual atoms and molecules. The device was fitted with a fine point that allowed it to push atoms or molecules around on a surface. A precursor to nanotech.

Category: World Schaiffer's World

BD -10°5696 - First Federation scientific outpost, later settled by animant refugees, now a mixed population Utopia Sphere world and center of "Splice Church" Universalism.

Category: Popular culture Schnizlers

Animated/RL children's show recorded in the 3050-4025 time frame.

Well known for its respect for life motif reaching throughout the series, especially its characters, 'Bippy', a self-aware AI, and 'Gloo', a low-wit and high-adaptability nano creation. The show is sited as a primary influence in the creation of the sentient-rights movement. Gloo has since ascended and become a spokesbeing for sentient rights. Bippy disappeared immediately after recording the last episode, despite centuries of research. There is *some* evidence that Bippy may actually have been a middling-S factor ai or ai construction and was the primary writer for the show.

Category: Astronomy Schwarzschild radius

The radius corresponding to the event horizon of a black hole, proportional to the mass of the black hole.

Category: Science science

Study of nature using the scientific method or post scientific method. True science is a methodology, not a religion.

Category: Science scientific method

The method of learning about nature from making observations, formulating hypotheses, and constructing observational or experimental tests to see if the hypotheses are accurate.

Category: Philosophy Scientific Pantheism

Broad term incorporating all forms of pantheism that reject supernaturalism or appeal to supernatural deities. Somewhat broader and more generic than Materialistic Pantheism.

Category: Philosophy scientism

Memeticity (generally a crypto-religion or bad philosophy) that states that the facts acquired through science are the only valid source of understanding reality; in extreme forms of scientism these are considered the totality of reality.

Category: Science Scientogenics

pertaining to the origin, development, evolution, and engineering of new branches of knowledge.

M.Alan Kazlev

Category: Religion Santa Claus Machine in the Sky

Baseline dependency meme dating back to Old Earth, based on the conception of a gift-giving supernatural deity that is invoked for trivial material favours.

Some cultural historians claim that this should actually be "Santa Claus in the Sky", since this religious trope predates SCMs. Another popular term was "Big Daddy in the Sky"

Category: Geography scopulus

On a terrestrial class planet or moon, a lobate or irregular scarp.

(plural : scopuli)
abbreviation: SC

Category: Weapon Scorn Cannon

Multi-barrelled autocannon popular among steamecha enthusiasts.

Side note: The Scorn Cannon derives from the classic phrase from antiquity "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". Initially they were referred to as the "Woman Scorned" cannons, but this proved too cumbersome for pit crews to pronounce and in some areas the concept of a "woman" was either irrelevant or seemed like an arbitrary designation for a scornee. In time it was reduced to Scorned and later Scorn.

The particular brand of cannon it's self is a multi-barrel (usually between 12 and 36 in most models, the "lucky 13" variant being especially popular) cylindrical housing which generally fires slugs of heavy metals using primitive powder explosives. Often the munitions and cannon it's self are designed to maximize waste smoke and provide an aesthetically pleasing eruption of fire in a forward and sometimes lateral directions.

Category: Spacecraft Scout Ship

A small, long-range relativistic exploration vessel, almost always GUT- Drive Sail, or Reactionless Drive propelled, equipped and designed for extended relativistic travel, with excellent shielding, and generally some measure of self-repair (but not self-replication) faculties.

Like Neumanns, Scout Ships are most often used to explore, chart, and sometimes also to claim for their parent polity, unknown or poorly known, mostly unexplored regions of interstellar space, generally on the Periphery or in the less charted expanses of the Outer Volumes. Although there is a great deal of romanticism attached to the profession, it is for the most part a lonely and tedious job, involving long relativistic flights that even at ship time may take many years. With the exception of the NoCoZo and the outer empires, personality screening is rigorous, and only those few sentients with the right psychological profiles manage to gain employment in the Scouting Corps.

Category: Spacecraft Scout Base

Port facility for the support, maintenance, and repair of scout vessels, usually located many light years from the nearest settled system or colony, let alone the nearest wormhole terminus. Most large empires maintain a variety of scout bases scattered throughout the periphery of known space.

Scout bases tend to be very basic asteroidal or moon installations equipped with basic facilities for fuelling and for maintenance activities oriented toward ships of mass 1000 tonnes or less. They will generally be crewed by a small complement of turingrade aioids. The tremendous isolation makes psychological conditions unfavourable for most bionts, and even many vecs.

In addition to the maintenance and refuelling of scout ships, some of the larger (and higher AI crewed) scout bases also have administrative and other responsibilities. In many remote regions many light years from the well-travelled Wormhole Nexus, the Scout Bases serve as a waystation for ships carrying dispatches and templates from the civilized worlds, have responsibility for cartography of the local subsector, and for contact and liaison activities with any newly discovered or rediscovered cultures, societies, and races. In a sense, a scout base is the embassy for the archailect empires in the sparser regions of the outer volumes and on the periphery.

Category: Music The Screamaphone
To match up with the sadistic 'in' crowd, Biophage Inc offers the Screamaphone. It is a series of small independent biological creatures with a very low S-factor intellect. These creatures are fully mature, and the user can expect 15 to 25 years' usage from a Biophage Screamaphone.

The user stimulates each organism by the method of their choice, evoking pure tone from each. Note that they are arranged in a pentatonic scale due to technical difficulties achieving a full 'normal' octave. These beings are surprisingly resilient and gratifyingly sensitive.

Plus, the instrument, while not sentient, is capable of being trained to play a given tune via negative feedback methods. This takes a skilled, firm hand, and a self-playing Screamaphone is a mark of the true master.

The rumors of this being stolen from the Snake's Mouse Organ are greatly exagerated.

Category: Region Scutum-Crux Arm

The spiral arm next closer to the galactic core (i.e. coreward) than the Sagittarius Arm. A fairly minor arm, it lies between the Sagittarius and Norma arms.
