Category: OccupationCategory: PhilosophyCategory: Esoterics Thanatologist

One who studies thanatology

Because death without backups or uploads is rare in the civilized galaxy, especially on any angelnetted world or habitat, thanatologists often have a reputation in the popular mind as eccentrics with unusual interests, even morbid tastes. The Thanatologist is interested in all aspects of the death process as it appears in contemporary mortalist, prim, and ancient historical cultures, including legal, moral, cultural, philosophical and religious aspects. Some thanatologists may specialise in particular means of mortality, including suicide, euthanasia, warfare, state execution (in barbaric feral regions), genocide, culling, accidents involving loss of backup data, and nihilistic transcension. Some study various prim and ancient beliefs concerning the afterlife, reincarnation, and ghosts and spirits.

Category: Philosophy Thanatology

The study of mortalist and historical cultures in which dying and bereavement was still a part of life, as well as associated myths and narratives and metaphysical beliefs.

Category: Worlds Thasaiya

Unassuming non-aligned low middle regions world,

settled in the early post-ComEmp period, and for a while home to a flourishing local culture. About 1200 years ago the local ai, for reasons known only to itself, prohibited swearing and imposed serious consequences on beings doing so. As a result, within a decade most of the citizens emigrated, and now Thasaiya is inhabited by a little more than a monastery of Reformed Tolerikerian Church.

One who studies or practices thaumaturgy

Category: Esoterics Category: Rumor Thaumaturgy

The scientific, parascientific, or ascientific study of magic and miracles.

True Thaumaturgy is distinguished from Technothaumaturgy, or miracles performed using advanced technology. While Technothaumaturgy is well known (and sometimes goes under the popular term "clarketech") the existence of psychic, occult, and/or supernaturalist thaumaturgy, involving results brought about through magical ritual, mantras, shamanism, and meditation is controversial, and whilst there have been some astonishing instances, these have never been verified under strict laboratory conditions. Nevertheless, on occasion even higher toposophic minds have often shown an interest in thaumaturgy.

Category: philosophy theism

Philosophical or religious belief in a supreme deity or a Absolute Reality of intimate or personal aspect. A broader term than monotheism

category: Government Theocracy

Government by religious leadership or priesthood. A common phenomenon among medieval/iron age states, less common in the industrial age, almost non-existent in the Information Age (the internet savvy Islamic cultures on mid/late 21st century Earth being a rare exception), Theocracy began to flourish again among the mushrooming of utopian and eccentric factions in the Interplanetary Age. The Interstellar era saw some local theocratic biosphere-states. The Stella Umma is the only Theocratic Empire to really make it big during post-Federation time

Category: Religion Category: Philosophy theology

Religio-philosophical discourse or speculation on the nature of God or transcendent beings in general.

Theology can be natural (seeking the Divine in the physical universe), supernatural (based on faith) or archailectonic/"artificial" (pertaining to the Archailects. See also theologian

Category: ReligionCategory: Occupation theologian

One who studies religion and the nature of deity, whether natural or supernatural

Theologians are often very diverse in their interests and orientation, depending on what sort of deity they study. Some specialise in religious philosophy and metaphysics, some in archailectology, and some in the revelations of gods and avatars. While some theologians differ widely according to their particular doctrinal approach, choice of sephirotic or noetic, and concepts concerning the nature of deity (natural and/or supernatural) and Eir relation to the universe, others are very broad and multi-denominational, embracing a great many religions, memeticities, and beliefs, and an entire pantheons of archailects, but even these specialize in matters pertaining to their own religious belief. Theologians may be baseline, nearbaseline, bioborg, cyborg, even vec or ai, and use databases and expert systems to store encyclopaedic terabytes of information on religious philosophy and doctrine, the nature of the spirit or soul, eschatology, ethical behavior and instruction, religious history, important founders and figures of all the important religions, although always specialising in their own, proselytism, didactics, sociology of religion, comparative religion, mysticism, and xenoreligion. Some important centers of theology are Graylag (in the Negentropy Alliance, hosting the largest population of theologians in the known galaxy), Tycho City Solsys (home of the Universalist Church), the Buddhist ashrams of Proxima Centauri Oort Cloud, and the Monastery Habitats of the Reformed Old Catholic Church (nearbaseline)

Category: Religion Theravada

Major Old Earth Buddhist sect, now very rarely practiced

Theravada was the longest lived of the Old Earth Southern Buddhism sects, and also the most conservative and traditional of the Buddhist sects, although practitioners now are very rare. On Old Earth it spread to south east Asia - mainly Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and parts of Vietnam, and reached its greatest extent in the 15th to 20th centuries. Although Southern Buddhism also spread briefly to the West and even acquired some adherents in the offworld colonies during the Interplanetary Age (the Metta Dhamma Loka Society based at Copernicus Habitat, Luna, at its height boasted a membership of 50,000 throughout the solar system and had an influence out of proportion to its size], most of its adherents remained on Earth. Following the Great Expulsion some of them set up small missionary centers in the Sol System, the Kuiper Belt, E Erandi and several of the moons of Tau Ceti III.

Category: Religion Category: Philosophy Thomism / neo-Thomism

the theological system of St. Thomas Aquinas (medieval age Old Earth) - a synthesis of Aristotelianism and Old Catholicism - teaching that sapient philosophy and supernaturalist theology have separate spheres, with one seeking truth through the agency of reason and the other through that of revelation, but reaching conclusions that support each other.

According to Thomism, all knowledge begins with sense (or instrument) perception from empirical data. From this the intellect abstracts universals and on the basis of these proceeds through deduction and induction to knowledge of things in their causes, and thence to knowledge of ultimate causality and the conclusion that the universe is the creation of an infinite uncreated Being. Everything in nature is composed of matter and form with the potentiality of the former being brought to actuality by the latter. Everything that is natural is good in itself and a cause of evil only when used for ends other than those for which it was created or beyond the limits prescribed by sound reason or divine law. Because of eir rational nature sophont beings are compelled by necessity to seek the highest good.

Along with Augustinism, Thomism remains an important element of the teachings of the Catholic_Church.

Category: Religion Category: Philosophy The Three and the One

Cosmogenic metaphor based on Sophic League capitals.

The Three are Ararat, New Taylor, and Sacred Heart, three worlds that take turns as being the capital of the League. The One is Satyaloka, the AI God primary node and dyson shells that is the center of the high toposophic Sophic Minds. Satyaloka is described as "the first manifestation" or "heaven" from which emanate the three qualities of embodied existence (gunas or tattwas) as represented by the three sophic capitals, which represent the mutable and cyclic embodied existence (each world in turn is the capital for a while)

Category: Mathematics Three Body Problem

The problem of determining the future positions and velocities of three gravitational bodies. The problem was proved unsolvable in the general case by Old Earth industrial age mathematician Henri Poincaré, which in turn led to the development of chaos theory. Although no analytical solutions are possible in the worst case, a numerical solution is sometimes sufficient for many tasks. A number of hyperturing mathematicians have offered varying resolutions to the Three Body Problem, although no complete solution that is comprehensible to an intelligence of less than S5 has ever been proposed

Category: World Threshold
Sco BH-76

Black hole. Used for burial ceremonies.

A black hole in the Mutual Progress Association, one of the closest to the Inner Sphere. As part of the study of the hole in the 5100's a framework of Lofstrom loops was used to suspend a number of research stations close to the horizon. Over time the Threshold, as the framework became known, became a major tourist attraction. In 5500 an increasing number of burials began to take place and the location became mainly a form of cemetery. Threshold has retained this purpose for millennia, slowly accreting an ever larger number of strongly radiation proofed temples, hospices, hotels and transcendence institutes on the vast framework.

A number of religions accept or favour "burial" at Threshold, and some believe it is a literal portal to paradise or eternity. Some technomegist offshoots such as the Reform Singularitians believe that anybody sent into the black hole will become the god of their own baby universe. Beside the already dead there is also a constant stream of dying or suicidal people arriving at the system, wishing to reach the event horizon while still alive. The Threshold authorities mainly see to that the falling bodies get their own time slot so that the gamma ray bursts of burial do not interfere with each other.

Category: Xenosophont Thyresta
Extinct alien species, inhabited New Montana (YTS-4885002-3825-IV; MPA). The Thyresta were endoskeletal four-limbed creatures equipped with two horn-like constructions that could act as manipulators, weapons and social signals. Apparently they lived in complex familial nests, developing a fairly sophisticated civilisation before destroying themselves in a nuclear war 3.6 million years ago. They are sometimes called "mankind's contenders", as cultural analysis suggests that if they had not destroyed themselves they might have developed the same kind of dynamic expansionist civilisation as the terragens did. A related species, Thyresta Minor, possibly a devolved form or subspecies of the original Thyresta remain and is being provolved by MPA organisations on orbital habitats surrounding New Montana.
