The possibility of moving through time has fascinated terragens since before the discovery of relativity theory. While largely discounted as impossible due to the potential of paradoxes, the discoveries of consistency and chronology protection theorems during the information age showed that the universe was safe from paradoxes and just barely might allow time travel, but that any time travel would have to be consistent - the past cannot be changed, and anybody trying would fail for some entirely natural reason.

With wormhole and other spacetime technology time communication finally became possible, at least in principle. By sending a wormhole end at a relativistic speed the two ends would end up not just in different places but also different times, and if the other end was returned or reachable through other wormholes, a passenger or message could be sent forward or back in time. Visser decay prevents this, as any wormholes getting to close to becoming a time machine start to destabilize and finally the smallest wormhole in the chain collapses.

It was discovered by the New Mars-based physics business being Geodesic Contelligence 4230 that Visser decay could be ameliorated using certain balancing strategies. When implemented, Visser dampening proved a great success: given sufficient processing power and energy the instability could be managed and balanced by continually adding balancing exotic matter ("the visser tax"). While enabling time machines, the main application was to prevent the accidental destruction of wormholes during linelaying.

Early experiments showed that Visser dampening did allow the formation of CTCs with macroscopic time lags, but that these time lags were too small to enable practical time travel. Messages could be sent back in time, enabling experimental tests of the consistency theorems, but wormholes with sufficient lags to enable significant time communications and travel require extremely large Visser taxes, so large that they cannot be practically used.

Since the expansion era many experiments in time communication has been performed, most notably in the NoCoZo for trading applications. The use of information from a few seconds in the future has been used by certain market speeders and major investors, but the cost effectiveness is limited due to the market chronology protection theorem of Lua.

Category: Physics Timelike

A path through spacetime that always has a local velocity less than the speed of light, and hence points in the same direction as time in a Minkowski diagram.

Anders Sandberg

Category: Personality Frank Tipler

Information age Christian Transhumanist, founder of Omega Point Theory

Category: Eschatology Tipler scenario

The central philosophy/theology/eschatology of Tiplerism. Life expands to fill the universe, which is closed. As it begins to contract, life uses its shear energy to survive and manipulate its evolution. As the universe collapses, the speed of information processing increases without bound and life evolves into an Omega Point. A popular memeticity in some areas where Tiplerism and belief in a closed universe is strong.

Category: Religion Tiplerism

Generic name for any of a number of small religions based on the omegist teachings of Frank Tipler

Hence Tiplerite: A person with religious faith in Tipler's Omega Point Theory

Category: Religion The Tiplerite Church

One of a number of small Inner Sphere omegist sects based on a Tiplerian cosmology. Mostly Terran Federation membership.

Category: Xenosophonts and Xenology Tkzeph

Vast expansionist theocratic/ (?)aicratic starfaring empire that disappeared without a trace some 312 million years ago.

The Tkzeph had a wormhole nexus far larger than the current terragen one. Estimates put their maximum expansion at 38% of the galaxy. However no trace of these megastructures have been found, and only remnants of their great orbital rings (although their dyson spheres, most since heavily modified by later civilizations such as the Yikoh, the Black Acropolis Builders and others, have been known to terragens since the Re-Evaluation age). No intact Tkzeph ship has ever been found.
