Category: Virch V-Life

There are many long-running virtual worlds which can be easily accessed by corporeal nearbaseline humans for entertainment purposes. One of the oldest formats of this kind of entertainment is the V-Life or Virchlife world.  V-life scenarios are differentiated from games in that games, even those played on servers between millions of virtuals, have clear sets of rules; V-life scenarios have no rules, and constantly change according to the whims of the directors and the preferences of the participants. Once inside the V-life world, it is generally impossible to tell the difference between participants who are avatars of corporeal persons, and participants who are entirely virtual constructs.

Some V-life scenarios only operate at specified times; others are running continually. The most popular baseline V-lives in operation at the moment include Outer Volume: Colonyship, Beamrider, and The Prims (The Prims being available 24 hours a day, although viewers are limited to non-interventionist roles).

Category: Language VA13

Emotion oriented artificial language developed at Phobos Olrondi Lang Labs. Makes extensive use of carefully rehearsed gestures and facial expressions. Popular among empaths, especially in the Communion.

Category: Memetics vaccime
(pron. vak-seem) Any meta-meme or memeticity which confers resistance or immunity to one or more memes, allowing that person to be exposed without acquiring an active infection. Also called an immuno-meme. Common immune-conferring memes are "Faith", "Loyalty", "Scepticism", and "Tolerance".

Every meme-complex includes a vaccime to protect against rival memes. For instance:
  • Conservatism: automatically resist all new memes.
  • Orthodoxy: evaluate all new memes against the standards of a pre-existing memeplex that is not itself subject to revision.
  • Science: test new memes for theoretical consistency and (where applicable) empirical repeatability; continually re-assess old memes; accept schemes only conditionally, pending future reassessment; ignore memes that cannot be subject to this schema.
  • Radicalism: embrace one new memeticity, reject all others.
  • Nihilism: reject all memeticity, new and old.
  • Nuage: accept all esthetically-appealing memes, new and old, regardless of empirical (or even internal) consistency; reject others.
  • Negentropism: reject all memes the acting upon which that might result in unnecessary increase of entropy.
  • Luddism: reject all memes pertaining to advanced technology.
  • Progressivism: adapt (parts of) new schemes to the old ones.

Category: Religion Vajrayana or Diamond Vehicle Buddhism

Major Old Earth Buddhist sect

The last form of Buddhism to develop on old Earth, and was best known from Tibet. It incorporated Tantric elements and emphasized ceremony and ritual are emphasized. It was bitterly persecuted and almost totally crushed in its homeland by the Chinese invaders during the atomic and early information ages. Like Theravada and Mahayana it spread to the West and established quite a respectable following, especially during the 21st and 22nd centuries and in some of the Orbital habitats and microworlds. Vajrayanist ideas were still popular among some baselines even as late as the second Federation period.

On a terrestrial class planet, a valley.

Category: Archailect Valusaban

4th toposophic archailect and current Overlord / embodied Mind of Kuranaba (Sophic League).

Valusaban is the latest in a series of 4th toposophic Minds (known locally as "Personalities" or "Avatars") that have ruled Kuranaba since it was established as a member world of the Sophic League

E is a dramatic figure, who as a higher toposophic femtoavatar has historically adopted a su human form to memetically reestablish eir devotees in the correct way of life. Although other archailects and even supernatural deities are worshipped in Kuranaba, worship of Valusaban is most widespread, and it it is said that eir favour will swiftly aid a devotee in ascending both the toposophic ladder and the transcendence of all toposophics, higher or lower, in nirvana

With the opening of Kuranaba to the rest of the galaxy via the Free Sophic Kuranaba Gate, literalist devotees of Valusaban, the so-called Balany Valus, have been attempting to proselytize to the rest of the Terragen Bubble, with little success.

Category: Tweak vampire

Neogen or tweak phenotypes modelled on gothic folklore, or as romantic quasi-parasitic bionts, bioborgs, or cryoborgs.

Category: Planetology. Van Allen belts

two doughnut-shaped belts of ionized gas (plasma) that circle a Gaian Type planet. The belts are are caused by the interaction between the planet's magnetic field and the solar wind. The particles (plasma) is trapped by the planet's magnetosphere. When stray particles from these belts collide with air, they emit light, causing an aurora.

Category: Polity Varadic Hegemony

Expansionist Late Consolidation and early Second Federation age biocyborg empire

During the Cygnis Wars both the Varadic and Arantan empires contended for ownership of the most resource rich systems, circumventing the wormhole nexus with relativistic battlefleets, and threatening to attack the stargates if either Cygexba or any of the Inner Sphere powers intervened. Eventually a combined Dominion-MPA fleet put an end to Varadic ambitions.

Category: World Varnerkaspi

Outer Crucis Corridor/Centaurus Sector Outer Volumes world formerly inhabited by the Neutral Way clade Durrel Inheritors (an off-shoot of the original cyborg Durrel Inheritors clan). In 8048 they departed at relativist velocity for the galactic core, leaving behind a rich selection of sometimes innovative and valuable and occasionally dangerous artifacts. The world is currently and profitably governed by the NoCoZo Posthuman Artifacts and Productions corpclade.

Category: Astronomy variable star

is one whose brightness changes regularly. They can have periods ranging from minutes to years. The apparent changes in brightness are caused by different phenomena; some change in size, some eject material, and others are in pairs that periodically obscure and enhance each other.

Category: Biology variation

Genetic differences among individuals in a population, necessary for microevolution.

In any population there are small differences between individuals of that population, clade or species. Some of these are beneficial to survival, others not. Both natural selection and artificial evolution involves selecting those variations that are beneficial to survival, or preferred by the designer. Alife that does contain variations among a clade cannot evolve. For this reason, most alife is or was originally designed so as to vary like organic biota.

Category: World Vast Endeavour
NoCoZo world in the Weber Expanse, inhabited mostly by vecs and Homo economicus. Most well known for its highly erratic and creative sentient core markets. It is the major cluster of businessmind metareviewing in NoCoZo and known for the Institute of Economic Architecture and the infamous Chahipho Collection of alien art.

Category: Glossary vasten

to enhance one's mind strongly ("to become vast"), related to transcending.

Category: Toposophy Vastening Effect

As a being becomes faster (e.g. by uploading into a computer or upgrading to faster hardware if already virtual) the apparent distances seem to increase due to the finite speed of light. Every doubling of subjective speed will double external communications delays. This makes highly advanced beings isolated, and often leads to the creation of archailect clusters and other dense superobjects. The problem is partially ameliorated by use of nano- and microguage wormholes, but this has other problems, e.g. increasing instability, problem of flooding by virtual particles if the relativistic wormhole termini are too closely spaced, etc.

Category: City Vatican City

Old Earth pilgrimage site

Old Earth city state and capital of the Catholic Church, much of Vatican City was packed in inert gas and put in a diamondoid vault, thus escaping the nanoswarms. Today it remains, in a vault surrounded by restored Mediterranean forests, one of the 48 pilgrimage sites of Old Earth.
