NASA, ISS partners quietly completing design of possible Moon-orbiting space station
#14
Teleoperation from Earth to planetary orbit and Luna and other points within 'near Earth space' is already included in the early history of the OA timeline.

Such systems would not operate exactly like 'real time' teleoperation systems, but more like the systems currently used to run rovers on Mars and the like. An operator would provide a certain degree of instruction, but the local device would also possess a certain amount of onboard ability (AI if you prefer) to figure out how to follow the instructions based on local conditions and to override or refuse them if they will result in problems or damage or the like.

This really doesn't require 'AI' in the sense that people generally think of it and the beginnings (if not variant equivalent forms) of such tech are already being used in things like self driving cars (or self braking cars which are already available on the market). AI has also been used on the US Stock Exchange for some time now and AI systems are able to pick stocks with a level of accuracy and rate of return comparable, if not superior to, human beings.

Bottom line here is that teleoperated space development is probably not that much of a stretch beyond what we can do now and that 'AI' already exists and means a lot more than 'a self aware person in a box'.
