Hm. Interesting - Both on general principles and (in OA terms) as a potential bit of biotechnology that the more bioist cultures in the setting might be especially interested in.

A question that comes to mind is if the fungus could grow thicker and so provide greater protection or if it is limited to the stated thickness. If the latter, perhaps some combination of layering it across multiple surfaces and/or genetic engineering might be employed to produce a greater thickness. If the former, the question becomes how thick it could get and if layering or gengineering might increase the apparent or literal thickness.
