Central to the Orion's Arm universe is the premise - found in Science Fiction but even more so in the philosophy known as Transhumanism - that it is possible for human beings to become more than human. In OA we don't limit this opportunity to humans alone. Any sapient being, whether human, enhanced animal, cyborg, artificial, or any other form of conscious life, may, if dedicated and persistent, and possessing the resources and technology and ability to do so, will be able to take charge of their own evolution and enhance their intelligence until they attain superhuman status. Some of these SuperIntelligences (SI), or Ascended/Augmented/Amplified Intelligences (AI), may continue to advance, ascend, or transcend, producing more advanced Intelligences, which in turn evolve into even more advanced forms, eventually attaining God-like status. These are very advanced beings, as far beyond us as we are beyond the most insignificant microbe. Because they are so far above us in power and intellect, these transcended Intelligences will indeed seem like gods, albeit gods of a Homeric sort. In this way mythology and science fiction meet, the AI-gods are like mythological (but still real) figures, with strange and even (to us) miraculous powers.
