Deus Ex


Well, I'm reviewing my namesake game, so:
Deus Ex casts you in the role of J.C. Denton, also known as JC Denton. You work for the counterterrorist group known as UNATCO (United Nations Antiterrorist Coalition). During your work, you will uncover many conspiracies, and... maybe the terrorists are really the "good guys."

Skipping all the conspiracies (which are plenty enjoying), you get down to your agent. JC Denton is nano-augumented, and during the game, you can amplify his abilities with augumentation canisters, which give everything from increased speed to the ability to deploy a spy drone with a EMP attack. Some augs border on "sillytech" (especially the regeneration aug, but it's more for playbalance than anything else), but they are all plausible (given our knowledge). It paints a picture of a dark and dystopian future, with prototype AIs and robots. The cyborged (visible, that is) are thought of as "second- class people", and the conspiracies mount up to a point where you discover some "aliens" lurking in the sewers and labs. But, are they really aliens, or are they products of genetic tweaking? Majestic-12 (MJ-12 for short) has a truly wicked array of enemies to throw at you, from the run-of-the-mill grunt (who shoots almost as well as you do), to the truly awesome cybernetically enhanced MJ-12 commando: these guys pack enough firepower to take out a platoon and then some.

Oh, and the weapons are pretty real-feeling until you get to the plasma weapons (rifle and pistol). Not only do they suck, but they're too advanced for the game's timeframe anyways (2052). At least all the rest of the guns are strictly "real-world"-ish, except for the GEP, which is another one of those "cool and plausible" weapons.
