Nearbaseline Human

Nearbaseline Human - Data Panel

Binomial Classification : (only a few of the thousands of species shown here)
Homo sapiens barnardensis
Homo sapiens lunensis (Lunar nearbaseline)
Homo sapiens novaeterraensis (of New Earth, Terran Federation)
Homo mediaphilus (of the Nova Terra orbitals and elsewhere)
Homo sapiens proximacentaurensis
Homo pacificus
Homo plebiogalactus
Homo plebus (common nearbaseline)

Definition:
[1] [fed age - recent ] any hominid sapient whose genotype or phenotype closely resembles, or has been only slightly modified from, the original Homo sapiens sapiens condition
[2] [Taxonomy] any member of the Homo sapiens Species Group, as defined by the Interstellar Society of Biotic Nomenclature, Erasmus Orbitals
[3] [colloq.] mediocre, commonplace, unexceptional

Toposophic: ~G0.3 to G0.4 - Berram 10G Scale (middle sapient)

Origin: descended from the original baseline human population / genepool who, as a result of genmodifaction, interbreeding, random genetic drift, darwingoo, and other factors conducive of natural or artificial selection, have departed from the original H. sapiens condition

Current Distribution: ubiquitous in most biont-friendly polities of almost every empire and civilization

Est. Population: perhaps 50 trillion all up.

Environmental Requirements: Earth-standard environments only

Body: Organic, although may frequently use biomod or cybermod augmentations, baseline humanoid appearance, although with a wider range of pigmentation and facial features

Further Comments: a very widespread and diverse grouping, distinguished by their common humanoid form and characteristics.

Strange as it may seem, this conservative creature, the Near-Baseline, including some 36 thousand currently recognised species and subspecies of the Homo sapiens Species Group (ISBN definition, Institute of Biological Taxonomy, Erasmus), is still in sheer numbers the most common hominid taxon in the galaxy today. There are various reasons for this. Certainly many nearbaselines come from somewhat socially or technologically disadvantaged environments or clades or systems, while others have retained their human form for sentimental or ideological reasons. But perhaps the most obvious explanation is that much of the constructed environments of terragen civilization is still generally geared for baseline Homo sapiens sapiens physiology, and hence there is no need for modification, and the social disruption that may ensure.

In any case, most of the non- H. s. sapiens nearbaseline species possess various partial advantages over the true baseline (H. sapiens sapiens). These may include enhanced intelligence, reflexes, immunity, sensory perception, longevity, attractiveness, and so on, most of which are the result of their adoption of public domain su, tweak, and splice genomes, or minor local modifications. Rarely is there more than one or two enhancements consistently and optimally applied, and as these augmentations tended to be original DIY attempts that gradually became entrenched the local genotype, the nature of the advantages vary dramatically from species to species, clade to clade, population to population; often even from individual to individual. And the fact that nearbaselines readily hybridise in breeding populations with other nearbaselines shows that categorising the group can be a nightmare or even the most dedicated anthropologists and taxonomists.

Among the most common nearbaseline subspecies and species are Homo sapiens lunensis (which are true nearbaselines and not Lunar tweaks as often claimed), Homo sapiens novaeterraensis (of New Earth, Terran Federation, often barely distinguishable from the original s. sapiens condition), Homo mediaphilus (of the Nova orbitals and a number of other NoCoZo worlds), Homo sapiens barnardensis and related subspecies, Homo pacificus, Homo plebus, (with at least ten thousand subspecies), Homo plebiogalactus, and Homo sapiens proximacentaurensis. An unusual variety is Homo sapiens quarkensis, which differ so little from the original baseline H. sapiens sapiens that they are sometimes considered the same subspecies, but have a long-lived and somewhat insular population and culture on the otherwise su-dominated system of Quark, one of the continents of Corona

Not only is there common hybridization among nearbaseline groups, but the dividing lines between nearbaseline and tweak, or nearbaseline and su, are often fuzzy. Many nearbaselines have at least some su and/or tweak genome in them (especially common domain templates), but they lack the physical, emotional, or intellectual genius of the su, or the well-optimised adaptations of the tweaks.

An unfortunately practice that is rampant among many of the more disenfranchised nearbaseline communities is Pumping. This involves the nearbaseline "pumping" eir genome with so many su templates that they become almost-su, but without the integral cohesion, talent and ability of the su. Such pseudo-superiors - variously called psuuds, suddies, or sooboos - generally develop mild to (occasionally) severe physical and psychological dysfunction. Not having the ability to rectify the problem, or the resources to employ someone who can, they add to the human refuse pile of galactic civilization, some even ending up in sewerslums and other uncivilized free zones rather than submit to a painful process of genome flushing.

Nearbaseline Genemods - Relative to Old Earth baseline humans, typical nearbaselines are genetically as well as environmentally gifted in a host of ways.

Clade Fedhed - Pseudo-historical nearbaseline biont clade created by the vec Dimimimon4 in the mid 5th millennium a.t.

Fouriers - a clade whose vision includes a Fourier transform analysis of everything they see.

Fullminders - human clade modified to have both male and female mental characteristics in each individual

Clade Gikk - Pseudo-archaic neb (nearbaseline) clade with sacrementalised quirks and flaws, created by Dimimimon4 around the 4600s

Hidim - A clade whose members are able to visualise and think in higher numbers of spatial dimensions as easily as baselines do in three dimensions.

Ireaders - modification - later clade - with increased linguistic ability, extending it to give an instinctive childhood ability to learn not only spoken but also written language, as easily as an unmodified baseline human learns to speak.

The Laylaron - interstellar trader House/Clade

Luckies - highly successful neural modification clade skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities to which they could respond positively

The Marians - middle tech haloist civilization/clade

Neotens and Soneotens - clade of neotenous humans, the Neotens were originally engineered during the twelfth century A.T. as an early form of pet human. Soneotens (Sophont Neotens) date from the late fourteenth century A.T.

Pet Humans

Plebhu - common mongrel nearbaselines, the most common species of hu

Protectors - A product of several centuries of germline genetic enhancement, eugenic refinement and memetic indoctrination, Protectors are biological baselines/nebs bred to guard baseline/neb individuals of high political status from such unpredictable events as accident, assassination, etc.

Clade Scrabo Prior - Nearbaseline human clade from Arkab Prior, who favour traditional nanotattoos for moodomorphic, displays, advertising, animation and graphic games

Slinguists - modification - later clade - more advanced than Ireaders, having not just an instinctive childhood ability to learn written communications, but made that highly efficient childhood learning process a permanent second 'layer' of ability when learning to communicate.

Smilers - human superclade who have had their mental processes modified to always be happy (includes Vidikiddies - Smiler clade that has adopted a form of hyperdependent infantilism, living in small parkland communities).

Unluckies ex-experiment nearbaseline clade gengineered to be "unlucky"
