Safetysteel

Safetysteel is a catch all name for a certain class of metals and composites. It is thought that this was the result of repeated brand name usage violation similar to what happened with Kerosene and other brands that became so well known as to become synonymous with the name of the product.

Safetysteel was developed during the pre-nanoswarm era to prevent injury to sophonts by melee weapons and certain industrial devices and as a safety option for household items. For a short period it became a leading method of preventing injury by accidental impacts or falls in the industrial workplace. Safetysteel quickly lost prominence after the creation of the newer permaform, smartex and pandifico materials and was relegated to niche use in various industries and products.

Safetysteel is a smart material that, when it experiences a sudden pressure load of over a preset amount, reverts to a rubbery gel like state at the point of pressure. This allows the item to flex and become relatively soft to the touch, thereby cushioning any blow or impact received to or from the object. When the pressure is released the Safetysteel returns to its former shape and consistency. When softened the material does not lose cohesion but only temporarily deforms its shape.

Safetysteel is still a favored material for use in bathrooms and pool areas to prevent injuries from slipping and falling. Many combat re-enactment hobbyists use this material to give realistic recreations of history while maximizing safety for the participants. Safetysteel is often used as a cheap alternative to utility fog and angelnetting. It is also common to see this material used in piers and other situations that require both a soft cushion between two objects and the ability to handle extreme pressures like wave-action, surf or other erosive elements.
