Tech Fields and ApplicationsOnly a few of the many uses
technology
is put to in the galactic civilization
![]() |
Technology has innumerable uses and fields of application, of which only a few are shown here. Each of these represents a specialized application of ultratech, in some cases technology that is relatively simple and can be understood even by a lowly near-baseline; in other cases ultratech of clarketech-like characteristics that can only be used and developed by high toposophic intelligences. Some of this technology is useful and beneficial for baseline-equivalent sentients, others is meant only for high toposophic powers and archai. Much is in the form of templates and meta-templates, in that before even nanoassembly can begin, the templates for the replicators themselves must be downloaded.
Apotheonics - toposophic ascendic technology, enabling lower beings to attain transingularitan states, and lower transingularity intelligences to reach higher singularities. Godseeds, SNARES, and so on.
Augmentics - augmenting or modifying the body, abilities, and characteristics of a biont or vec, whether for cosmetic, ascendic, or other purposes. Includes bioware, cyberware, wetware, and so on.
Communications - communications and networking technology, allowing commlink, access to the Known Net or local nets, cryptography, and more.
Computronics and Infotech - converting matter into forms capable of processing information - Chips, vatbrains, computronium, and more.
Construction - the construction of buildings, bridges, habitats, orbitals, megastructures, and so on, using nano, meso, micro, and macro-technology.
Didactics - teaching, elucidating, disseminating of knowledge and information; also helpful agents, jinn, and so on.
Envirotech - creating habitats and homes for beings, whether organic or mechanoid, rl or vir. Includes biospherics, mechanoid homes, virchworld design, and more. - see Space Habitat Design [pdf]
Isotech - building ISO components, always a popular commodity for export. Not possible for beings of less than S3. Requires nano, pico, femtotech, sometimes even hypofemto and clarketech.
Manufacturing - manufacturing industries in general, includes nanofabs, mesofabs, vattices, and so on.
Materials technology - Terragen civilizations use a huge range of materials, ranging from reliable standbys pre-dating the first civilizations of Old Earth to entirely new classes of materials invented mere centuries ago. Though forms of exotic matter are essential to some basic elements of Terragen civilization, such as the Wormhole Network, reactionless drives, and such constructions as Banks Orbitals, the production and use of such materials is the realm of transapient entities.
Matter Conversion - conversion of one form of matter to another, using transmutation devices such as Deep Wells (DWIZ). or similar.
Medical Treatment - medical treatment has to take into account the vast diversity of physical entities that exists across Terragen space.
Megascale Engineering - the construction of extremely large objects - Banks orbitals, Dyson Spheres, etc.
Military Technology - weaponry, ships, mecha, AFVs, munitions, sidearms; military hardware and software of all types.
Nanofabs - the everyday machinery of creation in your home.
Neogenics - the design and creation of completely new life-forms.
Power/Energy Generation - various forms of power generation, from organic to solar to amat.
Power/Energy Storage - the storage and transport of energy in batteries, capacitors, and other forms.
Robotics - assembly of vec parts, sentient ships, building and vehicle sentient components, and so on.
Infrastructure - the essential infrastructures on
which civilization depends; Service Industries, Mechosystems, Angelnets (Modes), and more.
Software - the instructions and information coding upon which not only virtuality but rl devices also depend.
Spacetime Engineering - creation of artificial wormholes, black holes, baby universes, and so on.
Spore
Technology - general applications
- see also Military
Spore Technology
- Spore technology is a common defence and self-preservation strategy
employed by many devices operating in hostile environments. A spore
device, typically a bot or vec, periodically releases numerous small
"spores" that quickly conceal themselves and then go dormant for some
period of time or until they receive an activation signal or,
conversely, cease to receive a signal. At this point, the spores begin
to rapidly and often stealthily replicate and then construct a
duplicate of the original combat unit.
Synsects
- Synsects are bots built to the
scale of insects, and often look somewhat like insects or other small
arthropods; they are ubiquitous in Terragen mechosystems and are used in
a wide range of applications.
Terraforming - generic term for all methods of making a world more suitable for life, including Paraterraforming, .
Transport - transportation of all sort; personal transport, public transit, land vehicles, ships, submarines, aircraft, spacecraft, shuttles... Moving both sentient beings (passengers) and freight.
