Dry Nanotech - Data Panel

Definition: mechanical assembler-based nanotechnology using non-organic components

A few alternative terms: Drex, Mechanonano

Level: High Tech

Substrate: almost always carbon-based, but uses other atoms where appropriate

Application: almost any use

Distribution and Availability: while basic dry nano has been replaced by more advanced hylonano, it is still widely distributed in a a number of high tech polities throughout the colonised galaxy, as well as in most regions outside the main spheres of influence. Somewhat inefficient, Non hyperturing-managed nano is popular with various small anthropist and anti-ai factions

Legal Status: dry tech without proper controllers or safeguards, especially replicators, are highly illegal in many polities, and possession is often punishable by personality wipe or destructive recycling. Failsafe dry nano is common, especially in high tech polities, but rarely found in ultratech and transapientech areas where the more efficient hylonano is standard instead.

Environmental Requirements: depends on optimal tolerance of device in question. Generally more robust than biotech

Ease of Use; Care and Maintenance: Requires little care, but often not self-repairing. Where non-replicating or in scarce supply may be expensive.

Popular With: Many non-aligned, independent, paranoid, or survivalist clades and polities of sapient grade.


Dry Nano - the Early Days - It was not until the 4th century AT that the difficulties of industrial molecular assembly production were overcome and bionanotech was supplanted by dry nanotech - assembler nanotech.
