A few alternative terms: Dumbtech, Bay ("baseline") Tech Definition: Generic term for a wide range of dumb through to crude (non-sentient) smart techs that use macro- or micro-scale manufacturing techniques. Anything from industrial age equivalent to pre-AI info age. Lacking nano, these techs are very inefficient and highly polluting in large quantities. However, on a unit level they may be useful because of simplicity of construction (in Lo Tech end of scale), and baseline friendliness. Includes: Macrotech; most Microtech; Basic to Middle-Level Mesotech; Examples: Lower Tech end: non-sentient "dumb-tech" devices, macrotech-shaped tools, non-smart dwellings (simple buildings of wood, brick, concrete, glass or steel), non-reactive textiles and furniture, manually-controlled vehicles and appliances, printed text material or equivalent, non-interactive and limited interactive broadcast media, simple filtration devices, metallurgy, macroscale (non-precise) chemical synthesis, hydrocarbon-based economy, electric batteries, electronics, manually operating firearms, nuclear fission, chemical rocket engines Higher Tech end: non-sentient computer and information technology, databases, interactive media, subturingrade to presentient turingrade expert systems, agents and search engines, geographic information systems, cellular phone base stations, network architectures, hypertext layout; miniaturisation, printed circuits, basic biotech, some germline engineering; some smart devices and appliances, low efficiency solar panels, simple automation, non-sentient manually or automatically guided weapons Constitute: Middle Level Tech Civilizations Also Found In: Mostly found in museums and societums, or as curiosities or one-off products of nanofabs. Both Low Tech and High and Ultratech civilizations, who usual acquired such artifacts by trade, foreign aid, or inheritance. Middle Level Tech artifacts can also occasionally be found as curiosities in Transapientech societies. Toposophic Requirements to Manufacture and Operate: Baseline-equivalent sapients Current Galactographic Distribution: Widely distributed and may be locally common (being found wherever Middle Level Tech Clades and Societies are), but for the most part rare. Most Middle Level Tech implements are found in lo tek groups, societums, and even among a few symbiont clades, which may be widely distributed in and beyond much of the civilized galaxy. Lower end Middle Tech weapons such as manually operated side-arms are popular with low tech anti-ai paranoid clades. Ludd polities are another source, but these primitive colonies are vulnerable and short-lived, due to ease of take-over by higher civilizations or entities. These artifacts may also occasionally be found in more advanced polities and societies, as many baseline-equivalent sapients enjoy operating devices they can understand. |
