40 Eridani trinary star system

The 40 Eridani system

The initial nanoswarm-refugee colony died out long before the arrival of the 'Twilight' (more properly 'Dawn') colonists at 40 Eri A-I. Dawn was one of the first worlds to join the Eridanus League, and together with Epsilon Eridani was the main reason for the name of that early interstellar empire. The TakiCorb leaders became very pro-League after the initial reception of the Charter and only a few fringe threshold bases on the planet dissented from continued League membership. Etodist, Mondecumen, and FalunDafa missionaries were not as successful here as on other League worlds due to the prevalence of animist beliefs.

Twilight (formally named Dawn by TakiCorb, but the other name stuck) was one of the first colony projects of the first federation era. The planet had been visited and briefly inhabited by refugees from the nanodisaster in 2500, but they did not survive beyond 2850.

The planet is tidally locked to the star, with a hot dayside and a freezing nightside. A constant cold and moist wind blows from nightside towards sunside, providing a narrow habitable twilight zone with liquid water in a ring around the planet. The twilight zone was colonised by tweaks, overseeing the construction of large climate controlled habitats for TakiCorb. The planet was colonised by a large contingent of Chinese descended baselines as part of the Phobos Expulsion Resettlement Treaty. Twilight became a member and firm supporter of the Eridanus league, but lacked the clout to keep the League together against the other interests.

The system never reached prominence, and the maintenance of the habitats proved expensive. Gradually they failed, and only the Twilight Tweaks remained. They formally joined the NoCoZo in 5403. Since then they have quietly built their own culture on the planet, with minimal contact with the outside worlds, except cultures on similar tidally locked worlds (like Dante).

With the improved planetary engineering techniques available after the Consolidation wars, Twilight once again acquired a rich ecology partly derived from the aboriginal lifeforms. The Twilight culture is traditionally based around a complex animist religious philosophy involving the sun, the planet, the weather and the concept of flying (sailing on the intense winds is a common sport and form of religious worship). From time to time resurgences of expansionism occur, and radicals break off to mainstream interstellar culture. Twilight maintains close ties with Dante, and many of the original Eridanus League worlds

The three stars of Keid

The three stars of Keid; left to right- Keid B (a white dwarf); Keid A (an orange dwarf); Keid C (a red dwarf)

In the last thousand years the Keid System has seen an influx of high toposophic defensive technology. For most of the history of this system the Twilightians refused to allow the Archailects of the inner sphere to build in their system; although there were major ISO structures orbiting Keid B and Keid C. Because of the perceived increase in instability in the Terragen Sphere following the war with the Amalgamation, the Hyperutilisation Supremacy incident and the Periphery War, the Twilightian Highflight Council has allowed the installation of several defence arrays in their system

The Chimney Cities

Yuancheng, one of the famous chimney cities on Twilight sunside. To cool the city it contains hundreds of vertical airshafts, where the air is heated by the city and rushes upwards. This not only powers many cooling systems, but it also enables the popular airdiving sports that has made the "chimneys" popular vacation spots for people with an active lifestyle.
