The Orion's Arm Universe Project Forums

First Time on the Orion’s Arm Forums and looking to contribute
#1
Hello All:

This is my first time posting on the Orion’s Arm Forums. I just want to say thank you to all of those who have contributed high quality articles and stories to this site. You have given me countless hours of joy.

I have always had an interest in Sci-fi. However, for me, I have gotten a little more picky with my sci-fi. I enjoy reading Sci-if based in hard science and Orion’s Arm has itched that scratch quite well. I enjoy reading authors like Alastair Reynolds, Charles Stross, Bruce Sterling.

I have always had an interest in life in Space Habitats and in a Generation Ship. I hope to be able to contribute some articles and stories in these topics. Do you all have any recommendations on where to start writing some of these stories for Orion’s Arm.

I am just beginning writing sci-fi and I feel like Orion’s Arm would be a good place to contribute. I look forward to communicating with you all on the forums.

Welcome!
I'm glad you've been able to enjoy OA!
Most inhabitants of the sephirotics life in orbital habitats rather than planets, so ... likely most stories you could write would happen in them.

Here are a few stories mentioning living in orbital habitats, though really, the characteristics may depend more on where in the timeline you write a story in. I think it helps to ask what kind of story you want to tell- An interstellar voyage? life on a more dangerous early generation ship? life on a much safer and pleasant generation ship later in the timeline? etc

here's a few articles, but many more are linked to them at the bottom of those.

Hi! Welcome to OA. Smile

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions that come to mind about any aspect of the setting or project. Also, please feel free to join in on any discussions taking place on the forums or the OA Discord - or to start new ones if there's something you want to discuss that we aren't currently.

As Dfleymmes1134 per OA Canon, the bulk of the OA population lives in space habs of one sort or another. However, probably due to residual planetary chauvinism on our part, we currently have many more articles that focus on planets in various star systems than on habs. This dates from early in the project's history and - although we've taken steps within the last several years to both limit new planet additions and increase the focus on space habs - there is still lots and lots and lots of room to make additions in this area.

In other words, whether you are inspired to write articles or stories that focus on space habs, we are happy to consider them for addition to the project. In particular - and this is just MHO - anything that gets more into the details of life on habs (what it's like, what things look like, what people do and how they get around, etc.) would be a good thing.

Reynolds, Stross, and Sterling are all familiar to many people here and are direct inspirations for various setting elements. Smile

Anyway - hope this helps and once again - Welcome to OA!

Todd
