Neat images
On a related note (and I may have mentioned this before, I'd seen it before and then forgotten), while looking at an earlier part of this thread, I came across this image:

Which relates to this EG:

I don't know who commissioned it, but apparently it never made its way to OA. What do we think of reaching out to the artist and seeing if he'd be interested in having it displayed on this EG page? He indicates on his DeviantArt page that he's aware of OA with the link to the site.
I'm not a member of DA, but if someone here is and would be willing to volunteer as an intermediary, that would be cool

This site has about a score of worlds, about half variations of Earth and half totally different planets, plausibly designed:

Another artist I highly recommend taking a look at is Joshua Knuppe (Hyrotrioskjan) on DeviantART, his wordbuilding project Silvanus is pretty well-done:

Artists like Alex Ries, Wayne Barlowe and Nemo Ramjet are pretty much what got me into sci-fi illustration and worldbuilding, glad to see they've inspired you guys as well

His planetary worldbuilding (often achieved by making physical, solid models) is excellent. His cultural worldbuilding and biology is somewhat less impressive, and not a little kinky. Ah well, each to his (or her) own...

Regarding commissioned art, what are the rules for getting OA art made from an "outsider"? What goes into notification of copyright, intellectual property ownership, etc.?

All artwork produced for the OAUP is copyright, and remains the property of the original artist, unless stated otherwise. We have used some material produced by artists not connected with the OAUP, by asking for and obtaining permission to use it on the site. This happened a lot in the early part of the project, when Alan Kazlev was looking around for suitable material.
Perhaps we should start doing this again, assuming that we find artwork that fits with the site - quite a lot of SF illustration looks nice, but includes elements that are incompatible with OA.
My own artwork is essentially free for anyone to use, so long as they let me know beforehand; I reserve the right to withhold permission.
