Proof-reading EG
Some of the articles on S levels are inconsistent.

The article http://orionsarm.com/eg-article/4a53a8f690f09 (Toposophic Level and Brain Size) stops with S:3. It should at least link to the article http://www.orionsarm.com/eg-topic/45c68b98779ad (Singularity Levels).

How are they inconsistent? Please be specific. We do occasionally have consistency issues between articles, given the fluid nature of the project, but it's also possible this is just an issue of something not being clear or being misunderstood. It will take less time to resolve this if we know exactly what you're referring to.

The article on Brain Size can easily be linked to the article on Singularity Levels. I'll take care of that in the near future if nobody beats me to it.

The article on Singularity Levels is already linked to the article on Brain Size in the list of articles below it.

The Brain Size article stops at S3 because at the time it was last updated we had not yet fully worked out the size/processing power of an S4 mind (we've long said it takes a Jupiter brain or equivalent, but the processing power took longer to quantify). When the original article was written it only went up to S2.

We've since come to a fairly solid idea of the capacities of S4 minds (don't have the numbers readily available, but they make an S3 look like a bacterium in comparison), and the beginning of numbers for S5 (10 solar masses of plasma processors). Time permitting, I'll eventually get round to updating the article. I'm currently planning to spend most of next year doing various updates and upgrades to the EG and the website functionality - so if nothing else it should happen then (starting less than six months from now, which is really very little time indeed, when you get down to it).

Sorry, I should have changed "inconsitent" to "incomplete".

I thought I had found some other articles which actually were inconsistent, but when I reread them carefully, I realized I had misread them. I deleted references to them but neglected to change the description of my report.

(I was confused about some of the details of intraconnectivity within s3 and above).

We haven't covered the details of brain size for S4 and above in much detail because a/ the brains of Archailects are far more complex than can be understood by modosophonts and b/ their characteristics will vary considerably whether they are constructed by S4 entities, S5 entities or S6 entities. Some (a very few) will be constructed by S3 entities, especially the earliest ones or out on the Periphery; these examples will be the largest of all.

"our focus within the project is humanities expansion."
should be
"our focus within the project is humanity's expansion."

i.e. it should be the possessive, not the plural.

would be better as

On that same page there are quite a few places where it seems that somebody's word processor inserted non-translatable "smart quotes".

Wormhole Engineering in Orion's Arm: An Overview
http://old.orionsarm.com/tech/wormholes.pdf

Critique #1:

It isn't always obvious to the layman which of the constraints described on that page are due to known theoretical limitations and which are editorially imposed due to the requirements of the fictional environment. Maybe a different color of text could be used for the latter? They seem likely to be a relatively small part of the total.

Critique #2:

There are several references to "relativistic" and "non-relativistic". It'd be nice if their relative magnitudes were defined. (There are real-life circumstances when low-speed relativistic effects have to be compensated for. One is in the GPS satellite system. Another was in the trajectory of the Messenger mission to Mercury.)

Contradiction with EG article?
FAQ:
Would an ultrarelativistic wormhole mouth have interesting/useful properties?
Due to Lorentz contraction a wormhole cannot exceed 0.74c without failing.

I assume that is supposed to mean something like
Due to Lorentz contraction, motion of a wormhole cannot exceed 0.74c without the wormhole failing.

This seems to contradict the EG linelayer article http://www.orionsarm.com/eg-article/4b1645da51e3d
Quote:Linelayers tend to travel with a top speed of around 0.75c. To reduce temporal displacement effects, most travel at around 0.707c, the speed at which the local frame of reference of the ship (and wormhole) experiences one standard year for every light-year travelled. On occasion void-ship linelayers have been reported, which can apparently travel much faster. Exactly how the massive wormhole mouth is incorporated into the voidship bubble is not known.

Additional niggling detail: 0.75c should be 0.74c.

Edited to add: You can ignore most of that last. Rereading the http://www.orionsarm.com/eg-article/48545a0f6352a revealed the "void bubble" workaround.

Adam's real-life paper on wormholes is here
http://www.orionsarm.com/fm_store/Traver...erview.pdf

He also wrote a technical paper on OA wormholes, but this leads to a broken link;
http://old.orionsarm.com/tech/wormholes.pdf
I don't suppose anyone has access to this material so we can fix this link?

I'm settling in to review the latest round of edits requests from this thread. I may have this paper floating around or it may exist elsewhere on the website. Time permitting, I'll get to the post on WHs and be able to correct this or at least point to where it can be found to be corrected.

More later,

Todd
