cool article over at io9 about the history of teleporters and matter replicators in fiction. I'm not quite sure if these ideas are dying, but they certainly give some good references for good storytelling.

in live action at least its a lot easier to CGI a shuttle than it would of been which was why they used the transporter in ST:TOS IIRC(and other media doesn't have the problem),the problem then becomes either all suspense is lost when you can simply beam people out or you have to have the transporters break down or be rendered inoperable every week. That said in stories where your examining the implications of the technology or a day in the life type it's not a problem as such.
