Rynn - I'd also like to put forward the notion that sapience or the lack of it isn't the whole issue when it comes to dealing with nonhuman sentients, either. Dogs are not normally thought to be even minimally sapient (AFAIK) but that doesn't mean that torturing one to death for no reason is acceptable behaviour. It may not be acceptable even if you have a good reason for doing it.
