What do you think of Matriarchy?

What do you think of Matriarchies? How do you think species that tend towards them (much like we humans tend towards patriarchy) would work? Do you think matriarchies would be better than patriarchies? or worse?

Some clades in OA are entirely female, such as the Parthenes, so they are naturally matriarchal (since they have no males). Other cultures will experiment with matriarchy from time to time, despite having two sexes, and some are permanently matriarchal. Mostly the concept of matriarchy is irrelevant in the Current Era, since modosophonts can change sex with relative ease.

Yes that, but I wonder how sophont species would evolve to tend towards matriarichy? there are already matriarchical species IRL, some of which are presapient Smile

That would be a good start.
Find a Terragen species which has a female-dominated social structure, and write about a world (probably a megastructure or paraterrafomed world) where this species has been provolved and has developed one or more cultures based around matriarchy.

There's one obvious example in form of the Sapient Hyenas, but many other unexplored possibilities.

I am against any sort of established hierarchy that places one group of people over another. Though matriarchies may seem interesting because as we live in patriarchal societies we are not used to them, and as on Earth women have been an oppressed group for many millennia and in many societies so it is fun to imagine the reverse, where men are the oppressed group, but really any form of oppression is bad, and matriarchies have the opportunity to be just as bad as patriarchies. That does not mean we should not continue to fight for women's rights out of fear of creating a matriarchy, because that's a silly idea that has no basis in reality, remember that when people are privileged, equality feels like oppression, and also, we are definitely not that close to equal rights to start worrying about that.

I think Hymenopteran (ants, bees, wasps) colonies might count as matriarchial societies; after all, workers, soldiers, and of course queens are all female; males are only there to provide and distribute their genetic material.
