Recent information about the formation of terrestrial planets suggests they might be even more varied than we expect. Shortly after the formation of such a planet, it is so hot that it enters a runaway greenhouse state. So a planet with lots of water could lose some, most or all of its liquid before the crust cools. Starting from very similar starting conditions, terrestrial worlds could have very different water content and ocean cover.
