Hello everyone, as a hard sci-fi enjoyer I've been finding myself spending a lot of time reading Orion's Arm Encyclopedia Galactica during past months and showed up for occasional interaction in the Orion's Arm discord server, now I've finally decided to make my entry to the forums to see the precious community and discussion contained within

I read the forum culture primer and loved the clarity, particularly the encouraged slow and careful approach to collaboration and the readily provided good practices for communicating tone in text, I feel that it resonated with me strongly. Myself I have a tendency to lurk and read at length without much commentary but it is not meant negatively, with time I might find what insights I could bring to the community

What interests you about OA? (Sorry that I keep asking this question to newcomers, but I am beginning to like learning about people, I guess)

What primarily brings my interest is that Orion's Arm is one of the few fictional settings I know that are truly unafraid to follow logic wherever it leads instead of bending it to serve a plot, maintain familiarity, build tension, etc.. It tends very well to the themes I loved from Science and Futurism with Isaac Arthur, to which I've been a listener much longer than I've known Orion's Arm, and also known for exploring thoughts that seem to lead to conclusions that are horrifying, too good to be true, or plainly absurd, yet all make complete sense when you see the path that lead there.

I also like Orion's Arm for following its premise to its logical conclusions. Maybe that's because it's a fictional world built primarily for its own sake rather than to serve the plot? I think that's why.

My other favorite world might be the Expanse, which is nearfuture and makes relatively few concessions in terms of logic. It doesn't have lasers, even though the setting contains powerful drives (with exhaust hot enough to serve as weapons on their own), or autonomous combat AIs (even though there ARE AIs in the setting, albeit not sentient ones). And for some reason the ships don't have radiators even though fusion drives would likely generate enough heat to shut themselves down in a few seconds if their heat wasn't radiated away somehow and I don't see how you could pump the heat into the exhaust itself.
