Hey guys, just officially joined the OA Project, hoping to actually get into the forums and contribute, and getting nostalgic for the old internet and actual proper forums like this.

I've been reading EG for a couple years now after stumbling across the Pas'utu'ril and Vedokiklek trying to reverse image search something for my own worldbuilding project and was immediately hooked. I have a hideous case of Too Many Tabs Syndrome and Wiki Crawling addiction so even now I have 55 OA tabs open because as soon as I open Wikipedia, TV Tropes, EG, or any other wiki then it's all over for me. It's been a while since I've been on a real forum, where do I start to get involved?

By the way, are the stories in Against a Diamond Sky or After Tranquility connected in some way to the rest in the book? I just started reading them and I think I know roughly what happened in the first one in AaDS but I need a screwdriver to figure out the total mind screw it is. No spoilers though

you're welcome to pick a thread in progress in the forum and offer ideas, wordsmithing grammar help, etc - and/or read "how to contribute" linked on the homepage

the short stories in both books are connected to one another in the sense that they are stories which happen in the OA universe, and the events described in EG articles. i'm not aware of any stories in those books which specifically reference one another. There's also some events which happen in the stories which do not appear in the EG, because OA canon has changed over the course of 25 years, or because the events of the story didn't make their way into the history records for any number of reasons.

summary of the first story from against a diamond sky- https://www.orionsarm.com/page/490

Posh Girls by M. Alan Kazlev
2500 CE: Three sheltered young women discuss their privileged life while society begins to collapse around them.

Hi There - Welcome to the forums! Smile

Feel free to join in on any conversations taking place or to start some new ones if there's something you want to talk about that we aren't at the moment.

Heh, heh, heh - If we're not causing Archive Panic, we're not really trying. Wink

Somewhat more seriously, you can get involved anywhere you feel you have something relevant to say/contribute. Somewhat more formally, and depending on just how familiar you are with the setting/project, you can check out the How to Contribute pages on the website, as well as the Forum Rules and Terms and Conditions. All of these can be accessed from the OA main page or the top of the Arrivals Lounge in the Forum.

Also - please feel free to ask questions - whether about contributing in some specific way or because you have questions or concerns re some aspect of the setting or wider project.

The stories in both books represent different author's styles and interpretations of the setting and in some cases may operate on the principle that the EG doesn't know what it doesn't know.

The stories in After Tranquility are arranged in roughly chronological order within the OA timeline (with a small amount of guidance provided in the transition pages between/introducing each story), but are otherwise unconnected with each other.

Hope this helps and once again - Welcome to OA!

Hello! Nice to meet you.

What interests you about OA? Tongue

Xenosophonts first took me to the site, I think a second image took me to the Vedokiklek and from there ended up on tribeminds and barnard bangers/grapeships before getting overloaded on terminology, noticed the categories below the titles and then just clicked on random links trying to figure out what the hell was going on and realized the sheer scope of what OA had accomplished

But yeah pretty much all of it, I love hard Sci-Fi so the real world limitations and how the consequences of it affect Terragen civilization. You guys have expanded "yeah its an AI that's wildly smarter than humans and controls everything" into the entire scientific field of toposophy and singularity stacking into nigh-omnipotent gods. The level of tech is highest I've ever seen (although I haven't read The Culture series or the Xeelee Sequence which people say is even more insane) and the concept of plasma processors and ___-brains especially godstars up to matrioshka hypernodes and the virches run inside them. Engeneration tech to travel the lightways also really caught my interest, getting uploaded, having nanomachines disassemble your body and send the data to rebuild your body atom by atom and getting redownloaded into a perfect clone of your old body, or a vec, or local tweak or a To'ul'h body is such an interesting concept.

Luckily with gradual uploading and downloading to maintain continuity of consciousness and photons experiencing infinite time compression, arriving at the exact instant they left covers all of my philosophical issues with the classic teleporter problem so I'm hitching a ride straight to the TRHN or Kiyoshi to dick around until I find a specifically ASCension maze

Same. I really like hard scifi, especially content like SAVAGES or the Expanse. I also like how high tech OA is - it's something I've never quite seen before. There are so many elements that you can play around with! I haven't read the Culture series either, though I am currently reading Surface Detail.

If you want to get a feel for the OA setting, you might find it good to read some of the stories on the website. My favorite one "Single stage of grief" - it is a touching story that also explores how mind enhancements could affect the way you process grief (which is such a fundamental human emotion). There is also "Hunted", "Head of the Herd", "The Anthropic Intermission", and "Dirty Hands". There are so many talented authors! Big Grin Hopefully you can you join them.

Dude holy shit, other people know about SAVAGES? I was gonna check the channel for updates and a rewatch once I got back from work and walked the dogs, probably about an hour from now when they get too cold (forgot to actually send this before leaving), that shot of the satellite over Jupiter popped into my head about 5 minutes before I clocked out and headed home

Oh I've been wiki crawling for close to 2 years now so I know I my way around the lore but yeah I definitely need to read the stories to dig deeper, I figured I'd jump into that after finishing at least AaDS so I had a better Idea where to look to find the stories I'd be most interested in, thanks for the recommendations.

I loved that excerpt at the beginning of the ascension page that ends in something like "I had nothing left to feel for them" warning people that you're leaving your old life and all personal relationships behind completely because of how much S1 relationships eclipse modos'. I found a few other opening quotations on other pages that reference it and realized it tells a mini story where you see them meet but also see it from the point of his former partner and their emotions after the toposophic divorce.

I couldn't tell you where on the wiki I found the guy longing for his pre-ascension wife named Winter, but the guy on the Temporary Bodies page also mentions his partner being named Winter and she's used as a sample nearbaseline on the modosophont's page, I had the impression that it was implied that it was a companion piece for the one on the Ascension page. For all I know there are even more out there but I haven't found any more on my current level of the iceberg. There's another fantastic one written by a "survivor" of the Excelsior Incident where an S2 perversity destroyed 16 trillion modos and irreversibly mindwiped the remaining 4T in the system to upload himself as a biological Dyson so to speak
