The Orion's Arm Universe Project Forums

Introduction
#1
Hello! I'm a longtime reader of Orion's Arm content (first discovered this universe sometime around 2014 or 2015) and finally decided to register an account because I've had some ideas for articles bouncing around in my head for a while.

As a newcomer, I'd appreciate any guidance for getting started on the whole writing process here. Thanks!

Hi There - Welcome to OA!

Please feel free to join in on any discussions that grab your interest or to start new ones if there's something you'd like to talk about that we aren't currently.

We're always happy to welcome new contributors! Smile

For initial guidance on how to contribute to the project, please see our How to Contribute page. On it you can find guidelines for contributing articles to the Encyclopedia Galactica, stories set in the OA universe, and much else.

From there, its mainly a matter of discussing general or specific topics in the General Setting Discussion sub-forum and - when you're ready to write up a draft article, posting it in the Encyclopedia Galactica sub-forum for review and feedback. As you can see we have a whole bunch of other sub-forums as well - feel free to explore or post there as well if there's something you want to say that feels more related to one of those. We also have a Discord server for more casual conversation if that interests you.

Hope this helps and once again - Welcome to OA Smile

Todd

P.S. - We currently have a software update being implemented on the forum, so you may see some funky warning messages along the top of the screen. They are only temporary.

welcome!

you've read the links on the homepage by this point , right?

You can begin by reading our intro, canon and illustrated primer. If you have more questions, you can search in our FAQ or ask on the forums or discord
also "How to contribute" under the participate tab

once you've done that (or read them again)

post your ideas here in this forum (preferably in some organized fashion) in general , or Encyclopedia Galactica articles

you can post basic overall dieas in discord too and chat about them if you need , with possibly more real time conversation

Thanks, all. I'll read through the How to Contribute pages and go forward from there.

I gather that it is considered good practice to workshop an article idea in General Setting Discussion first before starting a draft on Encyclopaedia Galactica Articles?

Yes, please. Smile

OA is a very old and complex setting with lots of 'moving parts' and workshopping ideas ahead of time usually pays dividends in terms of reduced corrections and rewrites when it comes to the point of actual draft articles being written. Our 'culture' here tends to be to point out issues or problems first and then figure out solutions to them and that is usually something most authors would like done up front rather than after they've produced 10-15 pages of text.

Feel free to ask questions at any point in the process, including when thinking about whether or not a particular idea will work here. And the best response to some version of 'no, that won't work here' is 'Ok, is there any way we could tweak it to make it workable here?' Often there is and sometimes some really cool stuff shakes out of those kinds of conversations. Big Grin

Hope this helps,

Todd
