Memory storage density - a milestone passed
#1
A few months ago, SanDisk unveiled a 128 GB MicroSD card.

Now, I did the math:

Dimensions - 15*11*1 mm. That is, 165 cubic millimeters. Taking into account the not quite rectangular shape, you can easily fit about 8 000 such cards inside the volume of a human brain. That means over a million GB. Or one petabyte. Of course, it costs about a million dollars today, but that's a different matter.

That is, consumer technology has finally reached the high end estimates for the memory density of a human brain. Doesn't quite have the processing power attached yet, of course.

I would imagine that the actual chip is considerably smaller than even a MicroSD package, too. (I can't confirm that - my googlefu is weak. Sad )
