He to Hh

Category: Society Headaround

A term used as a measure of how well an entity can comprehend information and concepts, by how 'big' a thing they can 'get their head around'.

Higher S entities can contain, consciously, far larger sets of information and concepts at once then lower S entities, giving them the ability to discern connection and gain insights that lower S entities, able to see only fragments of the whole at once, cannot achieve.

It might be used in conversation as follows:

* "The headaround of that is too much for me."
* "His headaround should easily be up to it."

Category: Pathai hegemonic swarm

Blight-like distributed entities trying to expand, disregarding the wishes and rights of other sentients.

Although this is sometimes used as a pejorative against expansive empires, it properly refers only to homogeneous swarms. Hegemonic swarms might be both intelligent and non-intelligent. See also Aggressive Hegemonising Swarm, Evangelical Hegemonising Swarm, and Camouflaged Hegemonising Swarm

Category: Personality HeggiBOTtom

Famous engineer-bot and debatemeister. The name is an acronym of Heuristic Guess/Grind Intelligence 'BOT of Tomorrow

Category: Solar System or World Hekufast

home of the Deines, high socioeconomic subclade of Radiation Nation

Category: astronomy Heliology

Science that studies stars, their composition, evolution, solar emissions, and so on.

Applied Heliology: includes stellar engineering, sun mining, sun lifting, etc

Category: astronomy heliopause

the boundary of the heliosphere of a star in which the solar wind's density and speed are greatly diminished.

Category: Solar System or World Helios A, B, and C

(Sol a, b, c) Intra-Mercury Orbital bands, SolSys

Government: mostly independent, some aligned with Mercury or under Solar Organisation jurisdiction
Sapients: 4.5 billion, mostly ais and copies, with about 1 million homebots, other vecs, cyborgs, animants, sun miners, and superiors.
Industries: amat production, nano- and picocomputing, simaesthetics, helioanakalyptics, plasma netting,

Comments: Originally home of the old Federation era amat megacorps, the Intra-mercury orbital bands have since been greatly expanded. They host a large number of ais and copies, who take advantage of the cheap energy rates to run their nano- and pico-computing sims and solid state virches. A small number of vecs and cyborgs handle the maintenance, and animants are employed for the basic service industries.

Category: Region Helios-Namhadiya

One of the Prefectures of the Solar Dominion. Complete Skies is the Prefect.

Category: Megastructure / Megascale Engineering The Helios Project

Large scale engineering project being undertaken by the Solar Dominion.

The project will attempt to initiate the accelerated collapse of a section of the proto-solar Black Milk nebulae with the intent to create a star. If successful, backers of the project claim that it could greatly increase the lifespan and survivability of modern civilization as it would at least partly free it from its dependency on natural suns.

Critics point out that existing stellar husbandry and Deeper technologies have essentially already achieved this (at least potentially), but the 'Engineers of Eternal Light' as they have come to be called, are undeterred.

The Lights (as they are commonly referred to amongst themselves) are being heavily supported by the Solar Dominion's archai network.

Todd Drashner (last para by John B)

Category: astronomy heliosphere

area centred around a star over which the effect of the solar wind extends. The heliosphere usually extends beyond the orbit of the outer most planet in a solar system

Category: astronomy heliospheric termination shock

the shock that occurs as the solar wind hits the heliopause and its speed slows greatly (down to about 20 km/s for a typical G-type star).

Category: Chemistry Helium
second lightest naturally occurring atomic element, most common element in the universe, with an atomic number 2. It has two protons, two neutrons, and two electrons. As well as being formed in the original nucleosynthesis of the Big Bang, Helium is also created from hydrogen atoms in the process of nuclear fusion that occurs within stars. Helium is plentiful in stars, the atmosphere of gas giants, and the interstellar gaseous medium. Helium is the lightest noble gas, and because of its inert properties, helium is very popular for planetary dirigibles, blimps and airships. About one quarters of all conventional matter in the universe is helium.

Category: astronomy helium flash

Runaway and explosive helium fusion inside a star as it evolves off the main sequence and into the giant phase of evolution. It occurs when degenerate gas at the star's center reaches a temperature of about 108 K. It can be prevented, but this is costly and requires extensive picotech stellar engineering

Category: Solar System or World Helix Orbital

orbital complex in the Aries Vector cluster, origin of the vec Kja Observance religion

Category: Alien Lifeforms hellswarm

A creature that combines all the less pleasant traits or aspects of terragen Africanized 'killer' bees, army ants and locusts.

On its homeworld, a hellswarm can strip a region of life as effectively as a major forest fire. The only defense is to either run away or burrow deep underground. Fortunately, the swarm is a short lived phenomenon, living only long enough to swarm, feed, breed, lay eggs in the soil and die. The entire life cycle of the creature is only about 3 terran days. The eggs may lie dormant in the ground for many years until environmental conditions (usually a warm, wet summer) triggers a mass hatching and a new hellswarm.

Category: Drug Hemi

an offshoot of Brainstorm, Hemi has much reduced side effects and greatly enhances one hemisphere of the brain.

A person suffering an artistic 'blockage' might take a dose of Right Hemi to break through the blockage, or a would-be composer take it to provide talent which might otherwise be lacking. Hemi, due to its even more severely psychologically additive nature, is illegal in all but the rarest communities. Left Hemi, incidentally, handles mathematics...

Category: Science Hencity

The science of what will be. Similar to futuristics, but is non-probabilistic.

Category: Religion henotheism

worship of one god or archailect, while recognizing the existence of other deities. The high god does not absolutely control other gods, but rather is (depending on the religion, the worshippers and the orientation) a sort of paternal/maternal figure or master node.

Category: Science HerSci, Hermeneutic Science

HerSci does not attempt to discover new knowledge, but figure out what more advanced beings or civilisations has discovered. Even if the more advanced beings are friendly it is often extremely hard to exploit their knowledge, as their explanations might be incomprehensible, clouded by intelligence barriers or otherwise garbled. The researchers study what the advanced researchers say and do, attempting to understand what it means and test their theories about this meaning empirically. In some cases whole chains of HerSci research occur, such as the famed transcendence institutes of Ain Soph Aur where cyborgs study nanotech AIs that study picotech AIs that study the wisdom of femtotech AIs

Category: Biology Category: Lifestyle herm

hermaphrodite, one of six standard hu genders, the others being male, merm, ferm, female, and neut. When occurring naturally among baselines and other hu clades (usually in prim or other non nanotech environments) this is most often caused by an unusual condition whereby both testicular and ovarian tissue develop. Chromosomes may be either XX, XY, or a mosaic of the two. More usually, as a fashion or lifestyle choice or clade or peer mark, a combination of bionano, nanomedibots, and specific hormone treatment are used to alter the gender. Hermophroditism is a common and natural condition among many terragen and xenobiotic life-forms.

Category: Solar System or World Hermes

Tau Ceti I - A

Mercurian type planet, about the size of Luna, orbiting 0.3 AU from its primary. A most populous vec and aioid world, mostly of Unity allegiance, although there are some Silicon Generation habitats as well. About 20% of the surface is covered by cityshells, and there are a number of industrial orbital bands. Industries include computronium  design, firmware, maintenance services, local administration, security, nanoassembly, buckyfibre, carbonite, and duralloy synthesis, vec design.

Category Esotericism Hermeticism, Hermeticist

esotericist phyle or group of phyles that in their present form date to the middle first Federation (although their antecedents go back much further, even to Old Earth). Teach techniques of magick and an emanationist cosmology involving zones of thought (also called sephirot); in Cyberhermeticism each pertains to a toposophic or singularity grade; in Neohermeticism each of the Archailects is considered the manifestation of one of these sephirah

Category: Splice Category: Bioborg hermophromorph

Erotogenic with genitals and other characteristics of both genders equally developed, especially in an exaggerated or augmented fashion; one has so modified emself

Category: astronomy Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) Diagram
Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram

graph that plots a star's temperature and spectral type against its luminosity and brightness, providing a complete typology and evolutionary chart. Most stars are "main sequence stars," and form the classic diagonal sequence on the diagram. Giants and Supergiants are above the main sequence, and white dwarfs are below it.

Category: Society Heterochronic Socio-History

study of history and historical sociology that involves interactions between minds of different subjective time-rates

Category: Society Heterochronic Sociology

study of social interactions between minds of different (even radically different) subjective time-rates

Category: Society Heterochronics

lifeforms that are able to alter their time rate practically at will.

One moment the beings are going at 1 million times our speed and then some split off and switch to 3 million for an intensive project and then split off some copies to travel on a starship at 1 million times slower than normal sophonts to make the trip go faster....

Category: biology heterotroph
A heterotroph (or consumer) is an biological or alife that cannot make its own food and hence feeds on other organisms. Contrast autotroph.

Category: Solar System or World Hethus V

NoCoZo world where mecha combat by pregnant females is allowed in the gladiatorial arenas, such combat is generally given a separate class since it carries such an advantage (thanks to increased reaction time). And even on Hethus the rules limit female baseline pilots to a maximum of three full combat-pregnancies. Any additional pregnancies must be accompanied by a leave of sabbatical from the arena (old law).

Category: World Hhrraiirah

(Sophic League) The home of the Hrruuaiih Sufant clade.

Hhrraiirah is a terraformed ex-Venusian Gaian type world of 0.85G, and covered in verdant savanna, with large biocities clustered along the equatorial region of the main continent Hrriiihhhhauahh. A number of other sapient species live on the surface and in orbitals, but most of the political power is entrenched in Hrruuaiihian hands (or trunks, as the case may be). Most of the other worlds in the system have been terraformed or paraterraformed, and each has its own uplift species. The system is serviced by a single medium-guage wormhole
